Glancer Magazine • SEPTEMBER 2019 • WESTERN SUBURBS • 9fabulousMeet the Retterer Family of Sugar Grove The Retterer Family finds great joy in giving back to people in many ways through the blessings, learnings, gifts, and talents that God has provided them. They wholeheartedly believe that a family that serves together will grow together and one of their favorite Bible verses is Ephesians 2:10: “For we are Gods workmanship created through Jesus Christ to do good works that He has prepared in advance for us to do”. Living through actions, David and Jennessa are going on a mission trip in October with Christ Community Church in Aurora who is partnering with Chosen Children in Nicaragua to do light construction on their schools and church, as well as host a baseball clinic for the children. Volunteering is not new for the Retterer’s. As a family, they have sponsored a child in Ecuador through Compassion International and pack meals for Feed My Starving Children. Lalia (8), Ella (7), Nova (5), and Alaina (3) are being taught at a young age to love and serve their community, and each is homeschooled in the early years. They enjoy baking with mom, playing music with dad, going fishing and to the movies; but mostly love hosting friends at their home. Around town, the family enjoys the Sugar Grove Corn Boil, eating at Genoa Pizza, and finding the best Mexican food in town. The Retterer’s try to live simply and always ensure they are doing onto others as they would wish others to do onto them. –Kristen Kucharski FAMILIESMeet the Keen Family of Naperville The Keen family is dominated by females and tradi-tionally known around town for some major girl power on and off the soccer and Lacrosse fields. Dad, Michael, and mom, Colleen, can typically be found with the girls managing or referee-ing a sports team, volunteering at an Indian Prairie School District PTA event, teaching religious education classes at Holy Spirit Catholic Community Church in Naper-ville, or visiting Edward Hospital with their therapy dog. They know the footprint their large family can make on the community and have ingrained volunteering in all five girls, MaryFaye, Ellie, Francys, Molly, and MaryEdythe for years. “It’s awesome how each member can get something completely different out of an experi-ence because we each interacted with different people in our unique way,” MaryFaye shares. Compassion, faith, and a strong work ethic are at the core of the Keen family, and Colleen had a vision to use this girl power to create a family run business with everyone involved. “Sweet Mary’s evolved naturally and started with their love of ice cream and the experience it creates when sharing with friends,” MaryFaye says. “The community is the best part of Sweet Mary’s and we have the best time engaging our friends and neighbors at block parties, athletic games, farmers markets, school fundraisers, and neighborhood events.” The family started this business on the basis of sharing smiles and creating positivity through ice cream, and has been amazed at how the simplicity of an ice cream bike can help empower some young girls with business confidence and sense of purpose. –Kristen Kucharski Photos by Mike MantuccaSeptember2019_Layout 1 8/20/2019 3:08 PM Page 9

Entertainment journalist, radio personality, and film critic, Sarah Adamson conducted two Q&A’s with Tamir Ardon, Head of Documentary with XYZ Films to discuss his recently produced release of the doc-hybrid film FRAMING JOHN DELOREAN starring Alec Baldwin. Glancer Magazine was also part of the scene and interviewed the Steeple Run Ele-mentary, Kennedy Jr. High, and Naperville North High School graduate, Mr. Tamir Ardon and learned what he loves about Naperville and so much more! “I have a lot of fond memories of growing up in Naperville,” Ardon says. “I loved at-tending the Last Fling before every school year started, and I was proud to be voted Mr. NNHS my senior year.” His family still lives in Naperville so when Ardon’s in town, you might spot him at his favorites like Portillo’s or Oberweis, sporting his DeLorean that he found in 1997, in the classified ads in the Chicago Tribune Newspaper. “I saw BACK TO THE FUTURE at the age of 5 years old at The Tivoli Theater in Downers Grove, so it was a special honor to play my film, FRAMING JOHN DE-LOREAN, on the big screen there,” Ardon says. “Certainly Alec Baldwin’s involvement in my DeLorean film has been an amazing opportunity. He helps to elevate the film and certainly brings more exposure to it.” Ardon is pictured above with Baldwin. Ardon was always mesmerized by television and film. In College he starred and pro-duced a local cable access show in southern Wisconsin called “The Dr. T and Paul Show.” It was a live call-in show where he played Dr. T, the board certified doctor of love; and although he was earning his Masters in Science in Anatomy and Cellular Biology from Rush Medical University; this ‘doctor of love’s’ passion remained in en-tertainment. “You only live once,” Ardon says. “I decided to apply to UCLA’s graduate program for Producing, and the rest is history.” He now runs the documentary division at XYZ Films, a production and sales company based in Los Angeles, and is also the Executive Producer on a film to be released later this year called, YOU DON’T NOMI. Glancer Magazine is glad to have gotten to know Tamir Ardon and looks forward to more of his exciting films! -Kristen Kucharski Suburban CELEBRITYFamous Film MakerPhoto by Nicole Rivelli PhotographyCOMING IN OCTOBER! Years later, after earning her marketing de-gree and working for a pharmaceutical company, she realized how much she loved fashion, style, and cosmetology and began “experimenting” again during playdates with her kids’ friends and their moms. After receiving her certification, she opened Cuts by Claudia. Along the way, opportunities included learning and working for celebrities and fulfilling her ulti-mate dream - styling for Fashion Week NY. “I almost fainted when I got the call,” Claudia says. “I was born with a unique eye for beauty, fashion and style. I would notice trends and mimic them; realizing beauty is about creating balance between makeup, hair and clothes for each unique person.” Claudia took her passions into hair care products and developed her own line, Organic Hair Care (OHC), which has been in swag bags for top named celebri-ties at the Grammys, Emmys, and Academy Awards, and is also sold at Oswald’s in Naperville and via Amazon; but, what makes OHC most special is that it was created for her own son’s sensory sensitivities and was the ultimate solution to eliminating irritation. Claudia hopes are to connect with a local autism organi-zation to create brand awareness while giving back. Pictured Above The Fuller Family of Glen Ellyn/Naperville Naperville residents, Kim Fuller and her daughters, Mackenzie (23) and Emmerson (20) live and breathe fashion, each with their own style and flare. Mom loves the Girl Next Door look – cute mixed with the simplicity of timeless classics; Mackenzie has a casual uncluttered modern style that goes from corporate America to nightlife easily; and Emmerson is always up-to-date on the latest trends keeping the family on their toes for running their two Glen Ellyn boutiques, MandEm’s and Meredith Jaye, which carry everything from infant to adult apparel, accessories, gifts, and room décor. The Fullers love Fall and are excited to incorporate the season’s upcoming trends into each of their personal looks. “Hottest seasonal styles include snakeskin, animal prints, camo, classic sweaters and weekend sets. Colors are the classic warm tones of fall, such as burnt orange, mustard, grey, black and deep blush,” Kim says. “Hair accessories like barrettes, headbands, and scarves are huge right now along with graphic tees, paired with ev-erything from denim to a printed midi skirt.” Throughout all the seasons, Kim, her husband and daughters support many local schools, charities and women’s shelters through donations of clothing and home ac-cessory items. It offers such a delightful sensory experience. The smell of warm gooey cinnamon rolls and coffee float through the air while customers sharing conversations of delight can be heard. They rush in and out to grab their favorite sweet treats before they are gone. Custom cake orders line the back cabinet. Pastry Chef and owner Amanda greets everyone with a smile and knows all of her customers and their favorites. In just a year and a half since Beans and Sweets has opened Amanda has grown such a following. Amanda’s story starts back in a small town in her Grandpa and Grandma’s house. She would sit in the kitchen while her Grandpa baked cinnamon rolls, banana oatmeal cookies, and breads and Grandma mixed up her oatmeal cake and poppy seed Bundt cake. She marveled at how a simple egg white could turn into a delicious meringue. That stirred her creativity and passion for baking that can be tasted every day. Cupcakes fill the glass cabinet with four weekly flavors, along with standard chocolate, vanilla, and red velvet. Cookie Butter, Cookie Dough, Sherbet, and Lemon Blueberry are just a few of our favorites. The creative cupcake flavors are executed perfectly, moist and baked fresh daily. They will keep you coming back each week. Macarons are a specialty and the Galaxy is out of this world! Its delicate outside is swirled with shades of blue and adorned with stars then filled with a chocolate ganache and a but-tery caramel. Tarts of all sorts of flavors; smores, lemon meringue, and fruit will make it difficult to pick just one! But Amanda doesn’t stop there. She fills the cabinet with whoopie pies, bars, brownies, cookies, muffins, coffee cakes, and the most amazing cinnamon rolls. Beans and Sweets offers kids camps, adult baking and cookie classes. Space is lim-ited and these classes fill up quickly. Or schedule a birthday party that is sure to be a sweet success. This September celebrate back to school with a special treat and a cold glass of milk. School themed sugar cookies and cupcakes will fill the case. Make sure to get there early as these sweet treats won’t be around for long! My entire family was coming to town for our annual reunion, and I routinely have the honor of being in charge of games and activities. Our family ranges in age from new-born babies to relatives in their 80s, all of which are active and ready for the next adventure. I came across Blue Sky Farm in Sugar Grove and quickly realized I had found our match. Sugar Grove resident and farm owner, Ellen Beau-lieu is passionate about her goats, mini-horses, mini-donkey, and dogs. She is certified in Animal Assisted Ac-tivities and Therapy and shares the benefits of their love with the com-munity. As we exited our cars, we were greeted by joyful dogs with wagging tails that walked us to meet the goats. From my two-year old nephew to my 79 year old aunt, we were all smiles ear to ear as we approached the cute little baby goats. We were doubly blessed that just 24 hours earlier, a doe delivered, and we were able to meet day old kids as well. The tod-dler, tween, teens, and seniors were all vying for a chance to interact with the little ones, and Ellen’s right hand gal, Charlie, was right there to help us engage. We started our adventure with Open Kid Kuddles, which is available to anyone, any age. We got the oppor-tunity to intermingle with the goats and mini-horses in their home envi-ronment. Plenty of ahhhhs, oooohs, and awes ensued from this personal experience. Next came, Goat Yoga, typically avail-able to anyone eight years and older. We laid out our mats and began with poses that invited the goats to actively participate with us by climbing on our backs, sharing our mats, or lying under our legs. The giggles were harmonious with the calm of the barn. This was the perfect all ages experience to unite the family in an all-in-clusive activity. Overview Blue Sky Farm creates a place to con-nect to animals, the earth and each other through Goat Yoga classes, cuddle time with the goats, private parties and special events tailored to all ages and all abilities, including tod-dlers, seniors, and special needs. Glancer Magazine • SEPTEMBER 2019 • WESTERN SUBURBS •19Theatre-on-the-Hill / Broadway After School Bolingbrook Since I was a kid, I was a theatre geek. Whatever show was avail-able for me to au-dition for, I did. I was on stage in school, college and well into my 20’s and 30’s. It seems that my kids might have tapped into that same passion for creating characters and honing their talents. I have to say, it gives me so much joy to see them shine on stage and know they are loving what they are doing. They are lucky to have so many more options to perform in the schools and communities than I ever did. One of their favorite programs is Broadway After School, a children’s off-shoot of the 501c3 not-for-profit organization, Theatre-on-the-Hill in Bolingbrook. Since 2001, Theatre-on-the-Hill, a full-time community theatre, has been producing the finest musicals, comedies, dramas and theatre edu-cation year-round at the Bolingbrook Performing Arts Center. Broadway After School, the concurrent junior program exclusively for grades 3-9, produces four musicals annually en-gaging many children and their fam-ilies. All registrants for auditions in these programs are cast, often with four shows and double casts to give more children the opportunity to have a larger role. The organization is committed to diversity and inclusion and encourage performers of all eth-nicities, gender identities, abilities and ages to audition. “Our mission is Teaching Life Skills Through the Arts,” says Michael Fudala, President and Artistic Director for both Theatre-on-the-Hill and Broad-way After School. “Life skills like communication, cooperation, compassion, confidence, team building and many more flourish in a cre-ative, non-com-petitive setting.” These two programs are exclusively run by vol-unteers, so if theatre is something that interests you, there are plenty of opportunities to assist onstage, back-stage, with props and costumes, or just supporting and attending the per-formances. Fundraising for this 501c3 not-for-profit is mainly through program advertisements, ticket sales and direct donations. If you would like more information you can visit them at www.theatreonthehill.org or www.broadwayafterschool.org . They hope to continue to grow their theatre family for many years to come.
