BE TOGETHER THIS FALL October is such a fun-filled season for residents, filled with lots of outdoor, autumn-themed things to do–especially for families. From pumpkin patches and apple or-chards, to haunted houses and Halloween parties, calendars fill up fast as residents are busy celebrating the season. If you love Fall as much as our #TeamGlancer does, you will love this month’s pages highlighting many exciting and unique things to do throughout the western suburbs. Autumn is also a time to bring added awareness to food allergies. This Halloween we encourage all homes to participate in the Teal Pumpkin Project which raises awareness of food allergies. Simply place a teal pumpkin on the porch to show trick-or-treaters that you also offer non-edible treats. You don’t have to stop passing out candy, you would just make non-edible treats available as well in a completely different bowl to remain careful. Ideas include stickers, pencils and other fun items available online at Oriental Trading Co. and at local Party City stores. Enjoy this issue, thank you SO MUCH for reading and happy Fall! MEET THE WALSH FAMILY OF DOWNERS GROVE Ann Celine and Frank Walsh and their three boys, Cole (17), Pierce (14), and De-clan (12) are all actively involved in their parish, St. Mary of Gostyn, and support and volunteer for many events, including adopt-a-family programs, coaching Downers Grove Panther Youth Football, and supporting local charities such as Noah’s Hope and Corey’s Goal. Ann Celine also volunteers to assist the Hinsdale Central Mock Trial Team prepare for annual competitions, since that’s where she personally found her passion for law as a member of the high school team in 1987. She also shares her experience having also worked as an Assistant State's Attorney for the DuPage County State's Attorney's Office for over 15 years, prosecuting and trying hundreds of misdemean-ors and felonies, including murder, sexual assault and domestic violence offenses. In 2014, she was appointed to serve as an Associate Judge in the 18th Judicial Circuit Court, DuPage County and has presided in both criminal and civil court-rooms, including traffic court, domestic violence court, arbitration and DUI court. In February 2019, the Illinois Supreme Court unanimously appointed her as a Cir-cuit Court Judge for 18th Judicial Circuit Court, and she will run in the 2020 election in order to hold her position as the Presiding Judge of the Misdemeanor and Traffic Division. Somehow Ann Celine manages to balance work and family time with the help of her husband Frank, who works in general contracting management, to remain fully present in their boys’ active athletic lives of football, basketball, baseball – also enjoying family vacations to Cooperstown, NY for famed tournaments. Family is extremely important to the Walsh’s and they relish traditions such as constructing a large backyard ice rink each winter and hosting an annual Turkey Bowl! They are also blessed to share their home with Ann Celine’s mom, Dorothy, who spreads wisdom and love throughout the house. -Kristen Kurcharski Photo by Mike MantuccaFAMILYGlancer Magazine • OCTOBER 2019 • WESTERN SUBURBS • 9fabulousOctober2019_Layout 1 9/18/2019 9:27 AM Page 9

Pumpkin spice, pump-kin patches, cozy sweaters with boots and of course all things apple. We ventured out to Plano in Kendall County to a new apple orchard. Doug and Laura Nelson opened Woody’s Orchard last fall. Laura shared with us that the idea arose after her father-in-law bought a train for his Grandkids. Deciding that an apple orchard was a perfect place to share and enjoy a ride on the train, they went to work. From that day on Laura and her husband Doug researched everything they could on apples. Laura took us on a tour of their high-density orchard and we learned about all of the growth since last year, along with their future plans. Her apple tree knowledge and passion were evident as we sampled apples right off the tree. Our favorite is the Kin-dercrisp which is a smaller version of the Honeycrisp. Both sharing the tart, yet sweet flavor and crisp texture. The Kindercrisp is a perfect size to eat on the go or for school lunches. The Ruby Mae variety is a beautiful apple that rivals that of Snow White’s apple. It has a sweeter flavor and has a texture similar to a Red Delicious. The or-chard offers twenty varieties for picking or purchasing in their store. It wouldn’t be fall without an apple cider donut, or two or three. Get there early as they make them fresh every morning at 8am and by the afternoon they are gone! The iced blueberry donut is just as delicious and offers that comfort you get from a warm blueberry muffin. The buttery caramel apples are a perfect mix of salty and sweet when dipped in nuts. Hungry for a bigger bite? Try the pulled pork sandwich paired with an apple cider slushy. Woody’s Orchard is open Wednesday through Sunday 10am-6pm. They have a pumpkin patch, hay rack and a unique kids play area. This Fall take a drive out to the country, sip on some hot or cold cider while en-joying the crisp air. Just make sure to grab an apple cider donut! Glancer Magazine • OCTOBER 2019 • WESTERN SUBURBS • 17WHAT MOMS LOVEMom’s Little Black BookMONTHLY COLUMNHaunted History Most know by now that October is my favorite month of the year! I love love love haunted houses and every-thing about Halloween and the Fall season! My girls and I have frequented just about every ghost tour or haunted house in the area, as well as every corn maze and hayride within miles, so I am al-ways seeking a new twist for our eternal passion. We have gone to the Statesville Haunted House in Joliet, which many assume is the Joliet Prison, but in fact, it is not. Old Joliet Prison is now officially offering tours of their abandoned facilities. There are four different kinds of tours - the History and Photography tours rec-ommended for ages 10 and up and the Haunted or Guard tours rec-ommended for those 16 and older. Having teenagers and asking them to hang with mom on a Friday night doesn’t usually bode well, but the in-trigue of exploring the inner depths of Cell-0117, the prison chapel with defaced confessionals, the hospital with barred windows, and the pad-locked segregation cells, was enough to earn their company for a couple of hours. Captivating! Absolutely spectacular! The stories shared by the docents on the Haunted Tour, covering the darker side of the Historical Prison, were indeed the more grim stories but incredibly engaging given the setting of the stained-glass, dusk lit abandoned chapel and flashlight glow of the decrepit hospital. We got to see the inside of cell block 0117 and the original 1858 segregation cell. The real “fear” set-in when the guide advised us not to close the door of the cells, as she had no way of getting us out! I can see why the Haunted Tour is rec-ommended for 16 and up, but I would highly recommend the History or Photography tour for the younger kids or scout activities. Truly a fas-cinating experience of living history. Overview Walking tours of the Old Joliet Prison lead by docents and trained tour guides from the Joliet Area Historical Museum. Select from three different tours: History or Photography Tour (Ages 10 and older) and Haunted or Guard Tours (Ages 16 and older). Glancer Magazine • OCTOBER 2019 • WESTERN SUBURBS •19TOUCH MY HEART FRESH MARKET IN NAPERVILLE It happens all the time. I make a large meal for my family and so much of it is left over, whether still on my kid’s plates or in the cookware. Sometimes our left-overs get eaten, some-times they don’t. Eating and food supply establish-ments also often find themselves with surplus food that they do not have use for. In Naperville, the Touch My Heart Fresh Market program found a way to make use of that surplus by picking up food from various sources and deliv-ering it to Special Needs Group Homes and families in need. The organization began distributing end-of-day breads, bagels and pas-tries from Panera in 2010. Since then they have grown their list of surplus food sources allowing them to deliver food four times each week. “The Group Homes we serve are only allocated a small amount of money each month through the state to meet the food, dietary and toiletry needs of the home,” says Rick Montalbano, Jr., President and CEO of Touch My Heart. “The TMH Food Distribution Project is helping to relieve a huge fi-nancial burden by supplying food items and allowing for the state funds to be spent on other needed items.” TMH runs large outreach events where the special needs community can come together and be loved and not judged; 80% of this community are wards of the state and 20% still reside with their aging families/caregivers. Their aim is to enrich lives not only with nutrition, but rec-reation, education and socialization as well. Fundraising events, spon-sorship pro-grams and contributions are how this project is supported. Along with funds, they are currently seeking do-nated office/warehouse space for storage and refrigeration of food and nutritional products to enable them to expand their reach to more of the community. Contributions of gas and store cards for supplies are also a big help. There is plenty of opportunity to jump in and volunteer for pick-ups, sorting, distribution and events. “We are always having fun,” says Rick. “There is food to be shared! It is se-riously like a constant party.” For more information on Touch My Heart and their activities and pro-grams, visit touchmyheartusa.org Mindy’s October Giving Inspiration: A fall cleaning of your pantry to find canned goods that could be donated to a food drive or an organization like TMH. Located In Naperville, Montgomery & Romeoville.Literary Local R.G. ZIEMER | The Ghost of Jamie McVay WARRENVILLE–October is the perfect time to share a spooky ghost story. War-renville writer, R.G. Ziemer, can help with that with his new fiction book and classic ghost story, The Ghost of Jamie McVay. As a junior high language arts teacher, he felt there just weren’t enough fiction books for teen-aged boys and wanted to write a novel with a main character that appealed to both boys and girls. Ziemer’s main character, Brian Krueger, has had some hard times and moves to a new town where on a gravel jogging path, he encounters the ghost of Jamie McVay. He and his new friend, Sharon, set out to discover the secrets of the truth behind the ghost and his quest for redemption and are set on a path to try and prevent a catastrophe on Halloween night. While writing, Ziemer researched the history behind the interurban railroads like the Elgin, Aurora and Chicago line that once ran on what is now the Illinois Prairie Path. “My sons and I frequently rode our bikes on the Prairie Path,” says Ziemer. “The story developed from letting the imagination loose in that setting.” The Ghost of Jamie McVay can be found online at Amazon and Barnes and Noble as well as many local independent bookstores. They know how to incorporate timeless traditions with a pinch of fad for eye popping sizzling looks for Fall. Here’s one of them. Tracy Ftacek of Oswego/Plainfield Tracy was born and raised Alaskan. At 21, she became a salon manager where she fell in love with the industry and graduated from Trendsetters School of Beauty in An-chorage Alaska. She went on to work as an International Trainer for John Paul Mit-chell Systems and made her way to the States to feed her passion for other cultures. “I saw first-hand the impact I could make in someone’s life and it inspired me to grow into a business owner,” Tracy says. “Pretty Convenient Extension Studio offers artists an opportunity to focus their cut, color and styling on extension clients alone.” She adds Fall trends include long hair with lived in color; hand-tied hair extensions compatible for braids, waves and texture creating muted looks that translate into fresh, natural-skin makeup, and clothing featuring oatmeal and weathered grey tones paired with a black or soft coral. Tracy is married with two kids, one who runs track for Oswego East and is one of the top 10 Triple Jumpers in Illinois, so with any free-time Tracy is sideline cheering her daughter on to victory. She also finds time to give back to the community through My Daughters Dress which provides discounted hair and makeup for high school stu-dents to attend prom. -Kristen Kucharski Visit us online to meet many more Stylish Local Gals at www.glancermagazine.com/local-women HEALTH + BEAUTYStylish GALPhoto by Mike MantuccaOctober2019_BackUp_Layout 1 9/18/2019 12:16 PM Page 25
