OPERATION WARRIOR WISHES IN ST. CHARLES In my humble opinion, we should all take the time year-round to thank and honor the men and women who work so diligently for our coun-try and for our freedom. This month, we shine a spe-cial spotlight on their service as we celebrate Veteran’s Day around the country. However, St. Charles res-idents, Craig Steichen and Matt Steichen (father and son) have dis-covered a way to keep their veteran tribute alive throughout their whole favorite season – football season. Operation Warrior Wishes, formerly called All32in17, really began in 2012 as just a bucket list dream to be the first father and son team to visit all 32 football stadiums in one season. Once they found it was possible, they budgeted and planned the trips but still felt there was something missing. They wanted a way to give back while they took their journey, and they came up with hosting wounded warriors as their guests to each game as a thank you for their serv-ice. The inspiration for the mission was from Craig’s brother, Ken, (Matt’s Uncle) who was a wounded warrior and Matt’s Grandfather, Leo, who served in the navy, both heroes in Craig and Matt’s eyes. “We thought giving these military veterans an op-portunity to get out and have a great experience at a game was an ave-nue to say thanks as well as raise awareness for a good cause,” says Craig. At the end of their journey, they visited their 32nd stadium in a record time of 103 days. After extend-ing into playoffs and the Super-bowl, they had honored 75 warriors in total. As Chica-goans, Craig and Matt were thrilled when former Chicago Bears coach, Mike Ditka mentioned them on ESPN Monday Night Football and offered to pay for their entire trip. The financial contribution was accepted but instead put to good use to create the 501c3 now named Operation Warrior Wishes. This year they will host their 5,000th hero. Along with attending fundraisers and making donations, the community can get involved by volunteering their time and nominating a hero of their own. WESTERN SUBURBS – It’s that time of year when we spend more time at the table enjoying family and friends while reminiscing about the year before us and the blessings to come. Amid your holiday shopping you can still eat healthy while on the go - fast and casual - enjoy quickly building your own “sushi in a bowl” before hitting the black Friday sales. When the family comes to town this season bring them to enjoy American inspired, artisan meals made with farm-to-table ingredients, while sipping on the in-house crafted cocktails, in an easy to relax atmosphere at the newly opened Chime & Stave in Campton Hills. Glen Prairie Local Flavor in Glen Ellyn can save you the hassle and host the entire family for Thanksgiving dinner on November 28th from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. be-ginning with Harvest Butternut Squash Bisque and Poached Pear and Organic Greens followed by Kauffman Farms Turkey, Organic Scottish Salmon, potatoes and vegetables. While in the tri-city area, swing by the new La Mesa Modern Mexico in downtown St. Charles on the scenic Fox river. If you are tired of leftover Turkey try out the vibrant traditional Mexican inspired menu with new age modern flare, unique mar-garitas, craft cocktails and the largest selection of Tequilas you can find in the sub-urbs. The lights are beginning to twinkle and the tree will soon be up, so start it off right with a breakfast buffet with Santa and your family on December 2nd at Maggiano’s Little Italy in Oak Brook. The buffet includes an assortment of pastries, baked french toast, scrambled eggs, bacon, orange streusel coffee cake, zucchini bread, fran's potatoes with roasted peppers & onions, seasonal, sliced fresh fruit and and delicious candy bar. Owner and Chef, Kate McNamara started the catering company Ginger and Soul in 2016. With such success the natural next step was to open a dining experience like no other in the area. The combination of the eclectic American fusion menu, ingredients sourced from Kate’s garden, local farms and businesses and the cozy atmosphere makes this a destination dining ex-perience. We were greeted by our server, Kim Kolkmeyer, who was friendly and attentive. We found a seat by the fireplace and enjoyed the picturesque view of the Fox River. Even though the space is cozy the tables have ample room to relax. Kim recommended a Blackberry Mojito Mocktail that was bursting with berry flavor and an Old Fashioned. We started with the baked Brie that was accompanied with prosciutto wrapped pears, and candied pecans that had an interesting hint of cherry. Next, we shared an Autumn Salad that was a nice balance of market greens, goat cheese, julienne apples, roasted beets and tossed with a light maple tahini dressing. The warm rolls that came to the table were delicious and the plate was adorned with cinnamon butter flowers. Just when we thought the food couldn’t get any better our entrees arrived. Chefs Kate McNamara, Craig Kierelko, and Jake Merz know their way around the kitchen. Customer Renee Larque recommended her favorite dish the Beef Short Ribs beside creamy polenta with a coriander chutney. The Lobster Roll is simply one of the best we have ever had. A fresh baked roll topped with butter poached lobster. Another favorite combination is the Turkey Gouda on a pretzel bun topped with honey mustard and green apple. The homemade pickles also pack a punch of flavor. A fun find on the menu is the Bibimbap bowl which consists of rice, smoked pork, pickled carrots, roasted zucchini, mushrooms topped with a fried egg, cucumber wasabi dressing and furikake sprinkles. A light dish that layers the flavor. Our final course was a sweet ending to a delightful meal. A comfort-ing Oatmeal Cream Pie and a slice of Concord Grape Pie were just what we needed to end the evening. Definitely a great find! Her teachers hung up a growth chart in the classroom, and Hayley’s name was at the bottom. It was the first time she ever felt different from her peers. Unable to find a book on the benefits of being short, Lori decided to write one. Through clever rhymes and beautiful illustrations, Being Small (Isn’t So Bad After All) teaches kids to ac-cept themselves and embrace their unique differences which make them special. “Being 5’1” myself, many of the situations in the book came from my own personal experiences growing up,” says Lori. “For example, my mom having to put my hair up in a high ponytail so that I could ride the roller coasters.” And of course, Hayley helped by articulating all of her own daily struggles with being short. Lori explains that the book isn’t just a book for short kids. It has universal mes-sages about self-acceptance, self-confidence and bullying prevention for all kids, no matter their size. Being Small (Isn’t So Bad After All) can be found on Amazon and locally at Barnes & Noble and Barbara’s Bookstores. Know a Local Author in DuPage, Kane or Kendall County? Glancer Magazine • NOVEMBER 2019 • WESTERN SUBURBS • 21WHAT MOMS LOVEMom’s Little Black BookMONTHLY COLUMNTwinkle Twinkle Little Star It was like running down the stairs on Christmas morning when the pack of lit-tle girls came squealing down the basement stairs. As they rounded the cor-ner, they saw a magical princess-like setup of whimsical teepees, personally adorned with each of their own names. Each teepee was setup just perfectly with a miniature night-stand, boasting a water bottle and sleep mask. Inside were the friendly smiles of little teddy bears sitting atop soft air mattresses ready to greet them and engage their imaginations for a per-fect slumber party or playland. The girls giggled and played for hours as they enjoyed some pizza and juice and pretended to have a sleepover just as if they were teens, and the moms were grateful they didn’t have to do the setup or take down as that was all handled by the owner of Whimsical Teepees, LLC thus provid-ing a hassle-free experience for all to enjoy. The best part is that there are so many themes, so this is not just for wannabe princesses, but there is a wide selection of setups including Super Heroes, Camping, Boho/Tribe, Unicorn, Mermaid, Flamingo & Pine-apples, and other creative means to meet the imagination. The teepees can be setup for an afternoon play-date or overnight slumber party and Whimsical TeePees, LLS services the western suburbs including Naperville, Geneva, St. Charles, Batavia, Sugar Grove, Oswego, Wheaton, Glen Ellyn, Hinsdale, Plainfield, Joliet, and pretty anywhere in the Chicagoland area. Marcelle Doyle of Wheaton Not having the time is not an excuse for not taking care of yourself, and Mar-celle is living proof that it is all about time management. She works as a buyer, as well as manages the charity fashion shows for Jeans and a Cute Top Shop in Wheaton, and just opened Aurelio’s in Winfield with her husband Tim, who also stays busy as a general contractor. With three kids in college across the country and working multiple jobs, Marcelle quickly realized that being 50 meant working out and eating healthier was mandatory if she wanted to re-main fit and mentally on top of her game. She loves going to H4 Training in Wheaton and targeting routines that reach every part of her body, while also hitting the Wheaton College Track for a good cardio workout afterwards. Marcelle uses her Apple Watch with the Lose It! App to hold her accountable for food, activity, and hydration. She has made simple adjustments like switching to 45 calorie Prosecco called SYLTBAR, snacking on roasted almonds, and adding more salmon to her menu to help keep her balanced. Muscle mass and mental health are the key drivers to Marcelle finding the time to give back to her well-being.Robin Pietrucha of Geneva As she approaches 50 this year, fitness and good nutrition are more important than ever to Robin as she keeps up with her two teenage daughters and anticipates celebrating her twentieth wedding anni-versary. Her journey toward wellness didn’t begin because of numbers on a scale, but rather her wantonness to be her best-self on the inside and out; and as a result, for the first time in her life, Robin looks forward to going to the gym at H4 Training in Geneva because she is seeing her efforts payoff in muscle strength, toned arms and legs, countless inches disappearing, and the loss of 15 pounds. Beyond her personal training group at H4, Robin receives daily mo-tivation from uplifting and positive Instagram posts of famed personal trainers such as, Erin Opera and Kelly Leveque. She ensures to maintain a healthy diet by snacking on avocado toast and eating at local restaurants that provide sensible menu options such as, flat-bread pizza with cauliflower crust and mushrooms at Livia in Geneva. At almost 50, Robin is in the best shape ever and is seeing great re-sults, which makes it easier than ever to stick with it!Fit & FabAT FIFTYEach Amazingly Strong & Inspiring, these West Suburban Women Share on Being Fit & Fab at Fiftyby Kristen Kucharski Photos by Mike MantuccaGlancer Magazine • NOVEMBER 2019 • WESTERN SUBURBS • 23November2019_Layout 1 10/18/2019 12:05 PM Page 23
