After years of struggling with infertility, Brian and Emily now have four children, Nikki, Brinlee, Haven, and Gevyn, three flourishing locations of Your Perform-ing Arts Center (YPAC) in Yorkville and Plainfield, a real estate development company, and a retail wholesale com-pany that is making global impact one artist at a time. “Together we are on a mission to give every child access to the arts!” Emily says. Through their journey facing unfathomable pain and undeserving promise, the Weber’s offer words of encouragement to all, “Adversity IS your advantage with faith. Don’t give up. Lean in.” Their children attend Peaceful Pathways Montessori in Yorkville and the family attends Community Christian Church in Lemont. YPAC gives back through part-nerships with CASA of Kendall County, The Kendall County Community Food Pan-try and the Webers, along with family friends, host an arts camp in Cite Soleil Haiti. Summertime brings family trips to Foxy's Ice Cream, playing worship on the porch, and beach vacations to Florida or Michigan. –Kristen Kucharski FAMILYPhoto by Mike Mantucca8.5x11_Glancer_Aug19-44_Layout 1 7/17/2019 6:49 AM Page 12

DINING + ENTERTAINMENTWESTERN SUBURBS – August brings our last summer month for outdoor din-ing and backyard barbecues, so be sure to bring the sunshine to Steamboat BBQ in Wheaton and enjoy what is touted as some of the best barbecue in town at one of their outdoor picnic tables. Steamboat BBQ specializes in smoked meats cooked daily using fresh-cut hickory wood and spice blends to produce the finest, authentic, southern style BBQ possible accompanied by a wide selection of sauces ranging from very sweet to hot-n-spicy. The ribs are the main attraction at Gematos Wood Pit BBQ in Naperville. They are perfectly seasoned and fall off the bone and it is said that the BBQ chicken and the Brisket are just as mouth- watering. A hand pulled pork sand-wich follows the BBQ line-up. The menu is diverse offering many Greek and traditional foods such as, Gyros, Burgers, Philly Steak, and Salads. Firewater BBQ and Brew is Geneva’s newest barbecue restaurant offering outdoor dining and the flavors, traditions and hospitality of Southern style BBQ. Enjoy all natural baby back ribs that are hand rubbed and slow smoked, as well as 100% ground Angus brisket burgers, smoked sausage, pulled chicken, and pulled pork. Firewater also carries local and regional craft beers that pair per-fectly with their craft barbecue. Although summer means on-the-go to baseball games, pools, and parks, you can take your barbecue with you at Smokey’s Wood Pit BBQ in Yorkville drive through. Call ahead for even faster pickup and grab and go! Smokey's Wood Pit features Chicago Style Favorites and Authentic BBQ slow cooked, smoked in house, at fair prices. After a long day out, you might just want to eat a family meal in the comforts of your own home. With just 24 hour notice, Picken’s Place can provide a true Texas BBQ experience to Clarendon Hills, Westmont, Hinsdale and nearby areas. -Kristen Kucharski Dining + ENTERTAINMENTBarbecue DelightsWEST SUBURBAN DINING1910 Geneva 30 W. State Street, Geneva (630) 845-9100 • www.1910Geneva.com Owners: Lindsey & Sergio De Los Santos WHISKEY, TEQUILA & TACOS Sergio and Lindsey De Los Santos are no strangers to the Geneva restaurant scene– they are the successful owners of Sergio’s Cantina. When the upstairs became avail-able, they decided to design a space with an urban vibe, trendy and creative Mexican menu, along with hand crafted cocktails. The historic building was built in 1907 with brick from the great Chicago Fire and in 1910 the first bar opened underneath its roof. Sergio and Lindsey restored the top floor back to the original brick and wood, added some artistic graffiti, a few swings, and reclaimed the space to host only the best nights. As the sun was setting, seated next to a window looking down State Street, our server Antonio Incandela recommended some great cocktails and mocktails. The energetic music and mocktails made us mamas feel like for a moment we were in the city for a night out. The Raspberry Cosmo adds raspberry puree for a sweet twist. Half priced whiskey Wednesdays is a great time to try the 1910 Old Fashioned. It starts with a glass that is smoked, then adds Buffalo Trace, Aperol, Tobacco infused bitters, orange bitters, fresh orange syrup and Luxardo cherry served with an ice ball. The Cucumber Mint is cool and refreshing. Sunday Funday offers half-off appetizers. Our favorites include the Poke Nachos with house made wonton chips topped with tuna, avocado, nori, sesame seed, serrano pepper and sriracha aioli. Lobster Quesadillas filled with lobster bisque, chihuahua cheese and habanero salsa have some heat to balance the sweet lobster. On Taco Tuesdays enjoy half priced tacos paired with five-dollar margaritas. The vegan and gluten free Esquites Tacos are packed with flavors of roasted zucchini, poblano corn, avocado crema and sweet potato crisps. Maui fish tacos are served with either black-ened or fried white fish and topped with tropical slaw, pineapple tequila salsa and a chipotle tartar sauce. Another favorite taco was the unique Camote Al Pastor with sweet potato sautéed with pineapple, Morita salsa, onion, cilantro, pepitas and vegan avocado crema. Just when we thought we couldn’t enjoy our evening anymore, we were served the house made churros with sides of butter Rum sauce, Baileys Mexican chocolate sauce and topped with ice cream. Make your reservation now! ABOUT THE CRITICS Stephanie (right) & Tiffany (left) Schmoker are west suburban sisters who have always shared a love for dining out and they also enjoy cooking together. Glancer Magazine • AUGUST 2019 • WESTERN SUBURBS • 17Mom’s Little Black BookMONTHLY COLUMNCompetitive Scavenger Hunt! When you can entertain middle school girls with a #MomsLittleBlack-Book activity – you’ve got a real winner on your hands! I had so much fun with my niece and her two friends on our Ad-venture in Scavenger Hunting excur-sion! We sort of felt like we were on the Amazing Race television show as we competed against other teams in downtown Naperville to accomplish tasks, take photos, collect random items, and make it back to the desti-nation before the designated time. As we received the instructions of the game, we gained excitement. The competitive edge really brought out our spirit of the game. Next, we had to designate a team name, and after a few whispers and giggles, the girls identified us at #TeamFarcus. I’m fairly certain it may the last name of a middle school boy somewhere in Naperville but not exactly sure. Hope-fully it’s not some kind of texting lingo that is a bad word! We then received our special bag, list of tasks, made sure our phones were fully charged, and were off to the races. Attention to detail is highly important and that doesn’t mean it requires adults to play, it simply means, read your task list carefully because this game can literally be played by anyone who can read, if you read it accurately. I was thankful I wore my gym shoes because they wanted to run to ensure we were the first ones done. FYI – running is not required at all (and probably not even the norm) - but when you are super competitive, and on a team of middle school girls – you run! We mapped out our course and efficiently completed our check-list. We made it back first with plenty of time to spare. As we emp-tied our bags and the co-ordinator tallied the points – we thought we secured the win until the last item was read and we realized we failed to read it fully – ahhhhhhhhh! So much fun! We will definitely be back to try another customized hunt and win! OVERVIEW Adventures in Scavenger Hunting creates custom scavenger hunts and brings them to wherever you may be, including towns like Geneva, Batavia, St. Charles, Aurora, Naperville, Wheaton, Glen Ellyn, Hinsdale, and anywhere! WHAT MOMS LOVEGlancer Magazine • AUGUST 2019 • WESTERN SUBURBS •19Working Bikes I find bicycling to-gether one of my favorite family past times. We are all outside, getting a little ex-ercise, and we can go as far we want (or until little legs poop out). If your biking family is like mine, your kids grow out of their bikes it seems like every sea-son, and you find your garage full of unused bikes. Sure – you could sell them at a ga-rage sale, or put broken ones to the curb; however, another idea is to donate them to Working Bikes a 501(c)(3) that gives old bikes new life by repairing and donating them as tools of empowerment in local and global communities. In devel-oping countries and areas plagued by poverty and high levels of unem-ployment, a bicycle could help pro-vide access to jobs, education, medical attention and other re-sources. In 2018, 12,632 bikes were collected, 6,420 bikes were shipped to global partners and 1,053 bikes were donated through their local donation programs. Working Bikes is proud to have sev-eral local donation programs that provide bicycles to youth and to adults to allow them not only a means of transportation and recrea-tion, but also to take advantage of community resources and opportu-nities. “I think that beyond being a fun way to get around, bikes can provide individuals with a sense of independence and a connection to a broader community,” says Devon Snyder, Community Engagement Man-ager of Working Bikes Chicago. The organization is primarily funded by sales of donated and re-furbished bicycles from their full-service storefront and bike shop. “Our customers know that in addition to getting a quality bike at a good price (the average cost a bike is $200), they are also supporting our nonprofit programming,” says Devon. Besides the donation of bikes, which can be brought to their Chi-cago warehouse or to any of their partnering drop-off locations, Work-ing Bikes is always looking for more volunteers to join their organization, and they make it easy by hosting five weekly drop-in volunteer ses-sions. To find out more information about donating a bike or funds or to volunteer in their activities, visit them at www.workingbikes.org.
