Museum of Science & Industry CHICAGO–The Boeing 727 returns to its 1960s glamour to take you on a tour of modern aviation. It’s been more than 25 years since the 727 landed at MSI. Turns out that was just the beginning. In a newly reimagined exhibit, Take Flight celebrates the historic United Airlines plane and explores how the airline industry connects people around the world. See a section of the 727 as it looked on its first flights in 1964. MSI also peeled back the skin of the airplane to show me-chanical, electronic and hydraulic systems. Learn about the science behind side effects passengers may experience at high altitudes, like turbulence and dehydration, and ways to overcome them. Talk to United Airlines pilots who volunteer at the exhibit, sharing stories about their career and answer-ing questions about how planes fly. Glancer Magazine • SEPTEMBER 2021 • WESTERN SUBURBS • 11Two Moms and a Mic Two Moms and a Mic is a podcast featuring two sea-soned moms with a collective of eight kids and an abun-dance of chaos. Naperville moms, Cory Briggs and Jenny Dodson met when their now, teenage children were in preschool together. Briggs and Dodson became good friends, and comrades of chaos management. While raising children (and glasses), they decided take their very real experiences to a podcast platform. Briggs and Dodson intended to create a community for moms and parents surviving the joys of mid-life while si-multaneously raising teen-agers in the modern world. Both former educators, and now stay at home moms, they have more than a decade of perspective on raising chil-dren. Cory Briggs Mother of four, master of none. Loving and undying in her devotion to her over-empowered teens. Jenny Dodson Desperately out numbered by her four children and blissfully distracted by pretty things. With more than 30K down-loads, the Moms have begun to build the community they intended. Their humor, raw wit, and catharsis has brought laughter, validation and re-prieve to their listeners. Heap's Giant Pumpkin Farm MINOOKA–Bright and cheerful. Positive and happy. Loyal and admired. These attributes are just a few that represent the significance of sun-flowers. What’s not to love about this sun-loving flower? They are fun, powerful, vibrant, unique and sustainable. In fact, many cultures hold sunflowers in high regard - often representing good luck, vi-tality, spirituality and harvest. For our flower enthu-siasts, there is one must-see, local farm that will have you swooning. It’s Heap’s Giant Pumpkin Farm in Minooka. And don’t let the name fool you! This family-run, working farm is home to Heap's Sunflower Harvest - an annual U-Pick farm-experience that has been a summertime favorite since 2018. Heap’s Farm has been a family-owned-and-operated farm for over 150 years. Once a cattle, hog, soybean and corn farm, it continues to diver-sify its offerings. This fifth-generation, 160-acre farm now specializes in over 90 varieties of pumpkins, gourds, squash, mums, corn, soybeans, ornamental corn, zinnias … and, of course, sunflowers! The farm opens its doors to the public each year, of-fering an assortment of family-fun activities from Au-gust-October. Other activities include: a 25-acre U-Pick pumpkin patch, corn maze (and haunted corn maze!), Milo’s Castle (a giant playground!), bean maze and hayrides. During your visit, be sure to stop by Papa Heap’s Grill for a pork burger, caramel apple and pumpkin cookie (weekends only!) - yum! Just like sunflowers, we encourage you to ‘follow the sun’ … hope it takes you where you want to be. And perhaps that includes a joy-ride to Heap’s Farm this fall. Happy picking! 28 • WESTERN SUBURBS • SEPTEMBER 2021 • Glancer MagazineFOOD & KITCHENBringing Dinner Back to the Kitchen Table Diane and Richard Beaulieu absolutely loved the convenience of Entrée Kitchen for nightly dinners in a world of work, sports, and everyday busy-ness. They were regular clients when they took over ownership in 2009. Richard maintained his job as a Forensic Accountant, but also now holds the titles of CFO, Delivery Man, IT and Maintenance Guru for Entrée Kitchen; while Diane loves having complete autonomy to do whatever is necessary to take care of their kitchen team and customers on a day-to-day basis while balancing their family life of raising their three teenage sons who are active in swim, the Civil Air Patrol, band, and orchestra. The family works together to support local school PTAs by offering fund-raising programs. Although it may appear, Entrée Kitchen is like other “meal prep” companies, there are many factors that set them apart, such as the bonus of being able to get right to cooking without the need of a knife and a cutting board to do all the prep first. This allows most of their meals to be freshly cooked in about 30 minutes versus 20 minutes of prep work first, before the cooking process even begins. Made-to-order entrees can be customized to include organic meat upgrades on many of our entrees, as well as other substitutions or eliminations to meet specific dietary restrictions; and unlike most companies, Entrée Kitchen al-lows the option of drop in and same day ordering from their well-stocked freezers with over 40+ different entrees, as well as a full complement of sides, desserts, bread, and appetizers too. An additional option is “Our weekly fresh menu, called Delicious Dinners in a Dash.” Diane says. “These entrees are available Monday afternoon through Friday and cook in 30 minutes or less. Plus, we will also have four Mother's Day Specials, a special grilling menu for Father’s Day, and offer a monthly Budding Chef's Program specifically geared toward getting the kiddos get to help out in kitchen.” With over 900 entrees in their database, finding a family favorite will be diffi-cult, but bringing dinner back to the kitchen table has never been easier! Glancer Magazine • SEPTEMBER 2021 • WESTERN SUBURBS • 31"With its combination of Dis-ney animation and awe-inspir-ing performances, Drawn to Life is a great addition to the Disney Springs entertainment lineup and perfect for all ages," said Jeff Vahle, Pres-ident of Walt Disney World Resort. "I'm excited for a new generation of guests to experi-ence this show as part of their Walt Disney World vacations." Drawn to Life, written and di-rected by Michel Laprise with Fabrice Becker as Director of Creation, is a live acrobatic journey telling the story of Julie, a determined girl who discovers an unexpected gift left by her Dis-ney animator father: an unfinished animation. As she dives into the inner world of animation guided by a surprising pencil, Julie embarks on an inspiring quest filled with her childhood Disney memories. Developed in partnership with Michael Jung, Ex-ecutive Theatrical Development, Walt Disney Imagineering, the story is driven by 10 unique acrobatic acts alongside animation from beloved Disney films as well as all-new animation created by Disney artists led by Eric Goldberg, best known for characters such as the Genie in the animated classic, "Aladdin." "It was an honor to have the opportunity to interpret the spec-tacular works from Disney's catalogue of animation into a live show and we couldn't be more proud of this production," ex-plained Diane Quinn, Chief Creative Officer Cirque du Soleil En-tertainment Group. "Together with Walt Disney Animation Studios and Walt Disney Imagineering, we have created a stun-ning show that will inspire audiences to dream and reach for the impossible." "Cirque's world-class creative and production team worked closely with us, getting to know and understand every aspect of Disney," said Natalie Woodward, Vice President of Production, Disney Live Entertainment. "Our incredible collaboration on Drawn to Life has created a show that celebrates Disney's legacy in the art of animation in a unique and signature style that is pure Cirque du Soleil." "I think guests will be amazed to see how the magic of Cirque du Soleil and the art of Walt Disney Animation Studios have come together to bring life to classic and current characters like Baloo, Baymax, and Cinderella in ways that no one has ever imagined," said animator Eric Goldberg. Drawn to Life is the 50th production created by Cirque du Soleil and its premiere coincides with the 50th anniversary celebra-tions at Walt Disney World Resort. 34 • WESTERN SUBURBS • SEPTEMBER 2021 • Glancer MagazineLABOR OF LOVE Charcuterie Boards are all the rage these days to serve an artful presentation of meats, cheeses, artisan breads, olives, fruit, and nuts on a wooden cutting board. Long-time Oswego resident, Ed Arnold has been wood-working his entire life and was en-couraged to share his gift with the community by allowing visitors into his personal workshop to make their own cutting boards from wood pieces of Walnut, Cherry, Sapele, Hickory, Maple, Padauk, Purple Heart, and Oak glued to-gether and sanded. The cutting boards can then be personalized with laser engraving and handles can be added if you want to create a charcuterie board or serving tray. I was excited to have my girls’ home from college this summer to join me along with some of my girlfriends to make our own. None of us had ever made anything like this from scratch. Ed was a phenomenal, patient teacher who guided us step by step from lay-ing out our color selections to how to work the sander - which was strangely therapeutic and had a bit of an ASMR feel. We each took such pride at our craftsmanship and enjoyed our chat time while we waited for the glue to dry. Once the drying was complete, we had the option to personalize our cutting boards with handles to create a serving tray, as well as add laser engraving. The creative appeal of this project to add something so personal such as a meaningful quote from dad, an inspirational message, sorority Greek letters, or a family name was the icing on the cake. You can choose words, symbols, photos, really anything – if you can dream, you can build it! Ed shared with us a grandmother’s handwritten recipe that was lasered onto a cutting board which gave a whole new meaning to serving up family tradition. We each felt such great pride with our labor of love, and I would highly recommend this as a family project, date night, group activity, GNO, etc…. Overview Make your own cutting board using your choice of wood pieces of Walnut, Cherry, Sapele, Hickory, Maple, Padauk, Purple Heart, and Oak glued together and sanded. The cutting boards can be personalized with laser engraving and handles can be added if you want to create a char-cuterie board or serving tray. Hands on fun! Combining those attributes with her profound love and connection to nature became the catalyst for Gaia’s Gifts: A-Z 26 Life Lessons from Mother Earth, a self-reflection journal connecting lessons that can be learned from nature and ap-plied to one’s life. “I connected each letter of the alphabet with something from nature and connected it with a life lesson,” says Kristen. “For example, A is the lesson of the Acorn and cracking through your outer shell to emerge, flourish.” These lessons present the opportunity for the reader to deeply reflect on the miracles of nature and within themselves. Along with her other achievements, Kristen has recently begun leading spiritual retreats and leading meditations, cre-ating experiences for people to connect to the natural world and help find their soul’s purpose, heal trauma and any as-pects related to lack of self-worth. IgniteHope Candles Wheaton/Glen Ellyn September is typically the month to “Go Gold” for pedia-tric cancer awareness, but as we all know, there are many types of cancers that strike every age. When cancer sur-vivor and IgniteHope co-founder and president, Jenna Lindman was in the middle of her battle, she often struggled with depression and loneli-ness. Although she deeply appreciated the support of her family and friends, there was something incredibly special about someone beyond her closest network of people reaching out to her. “I felt empowered and in-spired in the darkest days of my journey by these kind words from strangers,” says Jenna. “I wanted to bring this uplifting feeling to others.” Along with her now husband, Patrick Lopardo and friend, Tino Spears, the group came up with the idea to make candles that would have messages of inspiration hidden throughout the wax and are discovered as the candle burns. Jenna’s friend and CPA, Kristy Young, later joined the organization to help expand their efforts and implement new ideas. For the last five years, IgniteHope has sent out thousands of candles to cancer warriors, cancer survivors and cancer caregivers. Last year alone, they sent out over 556 care packages that in-cluded the inspirational candle. Before COVID hit, IgniteHope co-hosted socials at cancer resource centers with Imerman Angels, the American Cancer Society, Lemons of Love and Albums of Hope. These events in-vited cancer warriors to pick up care packages, share their stories and connect with one another. They also hosted candle making classes at centers like Gilda’s Club, Livingwell and Wellness House. “Although we have had to temporarily halt these events, we can’t wait to get back to these ac-tivities when it is safe to do so,” says Jenna. The organization’s website has a page where they en-courage anyone and every-one with a cancer warrior to nominate them to receive a care package. Although they sell the same candles on their website to help fundraise for the program, they are currently in the middle of a move and had to temporarily pause the sales. “We will be up again soon,” says Jenna, “but we can still fulfill any do-nation requests.” For more information on Ignite Hope, donating to their cause or to nominate a cancer warrior, visit www.ignitehopecandles.org. FITNESSHEALTH + WELLNESSDR. ALEESHA FISCHER What is Chiropractic? Chiropractic is a healthcare profession that focuses on the spine and other joints of the body, and their connection to the nervous system. The word chiropractic means “to be done by hand.” Chiropractors use adjustments to restore joint function and support the nervous system. Accidents, falls, and postural stress can cause subluxations, which are misaligned verte-brae within the spine from its normal position. Subluxations put pressure on the nerve roots and can decrease function of nerve signals between the body and the brain. Left unresolved, they can lead to chronic con-ditions. The weight of a dime on a spinal nerve can reduce transmission by as much as 60% (Chang Ha Suh, PhD. Spinal Biomechanics Expert). Chiropractic Care at Naperville Chiropractic and Massage also includes soft-tissue therapies, massage, lifestyle recommendations, fitness coach-ing and nutritional advice.
