As a hobbyist turned professional photogra-pher, she forever captures passion through her camera lens. “This summer I was able to snap a few photos of Buddy Guy (pictured above) performing at Rivers Edge Park in Au-rora,” she shared. “As I watched him, I could only think, gosh I hope I have as much zest for life at 86 years old as he does!” On another shoot, as she was setting up the shot of Brey-annah Tillman (pictured above), who plays Effie in Dream-girls, she asked her to just sing a little something to encapsulate emotion in the photograph. Breyannah’s little something was such a powerful and beautiful sight and sound, Amy felt lucky to be there to document such talent! In business now for 4 years now, Amy loves the variety of her job. One day she’s photographing actors on stage, the next a local musical festival. Some of her major clients are Para-mount Theater, Aurora Area Conven-tion and Visitor Bureau, Renew Salon & Spa, Aurora Chamber of Com-merce, Aurora Downtown, The Cotton Seed Creative Exchange. “It is a great way to get to know my community, and the awesome people who live, play and work here.” When not working, Amy and her hus-band Curtis love spending time with their young son and family, and visit-ing some of their favorites like Black-berry Farm, the rocketship park at Hope Wall School, ice cream at Deri Delight, La Quinta de Los Reyes, kayaking on the Fox River, strolling the Gilman and Fox River Trails, and some social time at Society 57. “This summer I was able to snap a few photos of Buddy Guy performing at Rivers Edge Park in Aurora and was admiring his zest for Life” -Amy NelsonWOMEN INSPIRED

TWO LOCAL BOUTIQUES FEATURING LIVERPOOL FALL STYLES WHEATON & ST. CHARLES–Jill Card opened Jeans and a Cute Top after years of working in retail and corporate sales jobs, wearing boring suits, un-comfortable panty hose, and predictable white dress shirts. The name was in-spired by her first date with her husband when she asked, “What should I wear?” and her husband replied: “Jeans and a cute top.” When Jill was getting ready for that first date, she didn’t have a great pair of jeans or a cute top in her closet and had to borrow an outfit from her sister, a flight attendant with a much more fun wardrobe. As she got older, Jill couldn’t find any great jeans for women in their 30s and 40s. Stores catered to teenagers or grandmas. The unflattering ‘Mom’ jeans filled in that age gap. Now, in Jill’s closet, you’ll find about 40 pairs of jeans. She has 8-10 pairs in regular rotation. Her go-to, favorite pair is the Gia from Liverpool—the denim is super soft and keeps its shape. Jeans & A Cute Top is the solution for women who don’t want to look ridiculous trying to dress like their daughters but also refuse to settle for shapeless lounge wear. Jill hand selects every item in the store, going to trade shows looking for style over trend, and finding affordable, beautiful clothes that work for all women, not just size 0 models. You will find Jill working the floor of one of her shops every day—she is committed to changing the world for women one great fitting pair of jeans at a time. www.jeansandacutetop.com Expires 10-31-22Shop Gallery24 • WESTERN SUBURBS • OCTOBER 2022 • Glancer Magazine

HELLO DONUT IN ELMHURST There is no denying it … America has a love affair with donuts. Cake. Old Fashioned. Cream-filled. Yeast. Glazed. Sour Cream. Jelly-filled. Fritters. Powdered. Crullers - the list goes on. So why the obsession? Perhaps, it’s nostalgic for some (after all, ‘tis the season for pumpkin picking and apple-cider donuts!). Perhaps, it’s the fact that it goes hand-in-hand with our morning coffee fix. Or perhaps, the answer is simple - they are delicious. Just as our love of donuts is unwavering, so is our love for artisanal goods. A yearning for handmade, quality ingredients, authenticity, originality and ‘storytelling’ continues to propel today’s economy. Hello Donut, in Elmhurst, is making an art out of selling donuts. HD, an artisanal donut shop that specializes in international flavors, opened its doors July 2022. Gone are the days of jelly, vanilla and chocolate. The menu features 45 flavors each month - a mix of tra-ditional, chef-featured and seasonal creations. October’s menu will release a mix of sweet and savory donuts, including: apple cider, oreo cookie, gold bar, greece (whipped truffle feta with hot honey!), mango lassi (Indian inspired), coquito (Puerto Rican inspired) and mochi (Filipino inspired). This family-owned business strives to bring cultural inspiration, cre-ativity and never-before-seen creations to its recipes. And, most im-portantly, everything is made from scratch. Whether it’s sweet or savory, vegan, gluten-free, culturally inspired or seasonal … there’s something for everyone. Local favorites: mango tajin, birthday cake and old-fashioned glazed! Deliveries are now available via Grubhub, Uber Eats and DoorDash. Stop by or order online - you donut want to miss out. They prioritize environmental responsibility by striving to be a zero-waste restaurant, using fully compostable packaging, and recy-cling its used oil into biodiesel fuel. “As a pescatarian myself, I found it very difficult to find quality sea-food without a white tablecloth and the cost associated with it. At Brown Bag, we’re here to make great seafood accessible to all,” says Donna Lee, Founder and CEO. Guests fill out a menu card to customize their meal starting by se-lecting from a variety of proteins such as grilled salmon, shrimp, or the rotating daily catch. Proteins are paired with creative “builds,” including salads, sandwiches, tacos, and grain and veggie bowls served alongside an array of housemade sides and sauces, such as Supergreen Garlic & Herb, Golden Ginger Lime, and Ses-ame-Soy Sriracha. The menu also features pre-built house favor-ites like the seasonal “CLT” – a crispy cod, lettuce, and tomato sandwich with spicy tartar, pickle slices, and seasoned fries. The brand prides itself on forming local partnerships with schools and charitable organizations and plans to make community in-volvement a priority. www.brownbagseafood.com FALL SHOPPING

ENTHUSIASTIC & TRUSTWORTHY Nineteen years ago, following a career in the hospitality, fitness and bookstore industries in the U.K., @properties Christie’s International Real Estate luxury Realtor Kim Scott moved to the U.S., ready for change and eager to fulfill her sense of purpose and drive. “I loved how this got me out and about,” she recalls. “I had a lot to learn in a new country.” Scott says that her biggest accomplishment has been going from not knowing anyone in the U.S. to deriving nearly all her business from friends and referrals, an evolution that has brought her the Top 1% award in both sales and volume in Chicagoland from the Main-street Organization of Realtors. A Certified Luxury Home Marketing Specialist from the Institute for Luxury Home Marketing, Scott at-tributes her success to her forward thinking and determination. “It’s a vibrant market,” she says. “You need to hustle.” Scott believes that clear and concise communication is at the heart of every successful real estate transaction. Her up-to-date industry knowledge and years of experience allow her to make the buying or listing process an easy one for her clients. Beyond her passion for her work, Scott is a global traveler. Her last trip (pre-COVID, of course) took her to Vietnam, where she back-packed from Saigon to Da Nang to Hoi An to Hanoi. She is also an avid runner, having twice qualified for the Boston Marathon and run-ning 15 marathons in all. “I may be a retired runner,” Scott remarks, “but never say never.” And just when you thought she might have some free time, she also supports the Agape Orphanage in India, which helps poor children orphaned by the AIDS pandemic. She has been married for more than 20 years and has two children, Georgina (27), who lives in Sydney, Australia, and William (25), who is following his mother into Chicago real estate.-Kristen Kucharski, Photos by Mike Catuara CONTACT KIM Kim Scott @properties 1003 S. PURPOSEFULLY DRIVEN Debbie’s community ties since 1995 gives her an enthusiastic edge when working with buyers and sellers. Her professional, down to earth approach with unwavering commitment to her clients, has enabled her to build up a vast network of referrals over the past 8 years. Attention to detail combined with an exceptional understanding of the mar-ketplace, genuine care for people, attentive listening skills, and dedication to fulfilling client’s goals is abundantly evident. “I LOVE people and the journey that takes us from A to Z. I believe we all have a story to tell, and that story begins at home,” Debbie shares. “For much of my adult life, I was known as a working stay-at-home PTA mom/wife, and was led to a new full time career as a 50 year-old single mom. It took perseverance, patience, and trust in the process to transition to Debbie Lendino, john greene Realtor, trusted advisor extraordinaire!” Debbie’s strong ability to negotiate and problem solve support her business that has been predominantly built on referrals, open homes, and networking. She is confident, yet humble; compassionate, yet persistent; knowledgeable, yet always learning. She relies on jgR’s tools to maintain a powerful post close process for her buyers and sellers and has an impressive social media presence that aids in marketing her listings. With the Naperville and western suburban market tilted to sellers from a supply/demand imbalance, the housing market overall has peaked and is headed toward stabilization. Area home price appreciation is up almost 14%, and a slight cool is a good sign for Debbie’s buyers who are coming off the sidelines, even with interest rates on the rise. “Utilization of john greene Realtor's technology is unmatched,” she says. “Always fresh, always something NEW, excellent!,” Debbie says. “I love being a part of an organization that supports each other - a cheerleader to new agents, mentoring small groups, collaborating with business partners, brainstorming with outside agents, networking, volunteering...these all align with my purpose!” As a top performing agent, it brings Debbie great joy to build on her referral base and provide an elite experience for her clients. BOUNDLESS ENERGY Penny O’Brien’s clients always comment on her boundless energy and her intense work ethic. When she meets clients, she brings her confidence and determination to do her best work. She listens to what is important to them and the results they'd like to achieve. O'Brien's rise in the ranks of Naperville real estate has been lightning fast, selling $53 million in 2021, her 8th year in the business. Penny was the #1 agent at Baird & Warner Naperville in 2021. Year to date for 2022, the Penny O’Brien Group has $46 million in written and closed sales and 86 trans-actions. Mainstreet Organization of Realtors recognized her as among the Top 1% in Sales and Transactions. She was awarded Glancer Magazine’s Readers’ Choice award in 2020, 2021 and 2022. She works with two full time agents, Karen Sanders, Mia Dehnoo and a full time transaction coordi-nator, Leslie Lathrop. They each have our own clients, but they support each other & complement each other’s skill set. Sellers often can't envision what it takes to get their home ready for the mar-ket. O’Brien puts them at ease, sets the timeline and recommends her team of contractors to seamlessly ready the home. The results are in. Her listings receive an astounding 200% more showings than the average agent. She believes in strategic pricing, offers a price range, and discusses the different outcomes. Her listings sell for 2.9% over the market average. She is a con-summate communicator. The Penny O’Brien Group’s services include com-plimentary professional staging, drone photography, dazzling videos and top-notch innovative marketing—in fact, 35 percent of the group’s clients come from marketing. “I’m honest, confident and determined, and will explain to clients what it takes to get the job done,” O’Brien says. “The reason to work with an agent doing a lot of business is because they have the reputation, people, mar-keting and processes in place to make the transaction as seamless as pos-sible.” I am proud to call Naperville home for 22 years. I love sharing my enthusi-asm & knowledge of Naperville with its many neighborhoods & 2 school dis-tricts. Dig Pink for the Side-Out Foundation WHEATON/PLAINFIELD/ NAPERVILLE–October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Everywhere you look, pink prevails. You will see sports teams wearing pink socks or jerseys, girls and women putting pink extensions in their hair, and many pink t-shirts in support of the cause. To help with awareness, many of our local high school girls volley-ball teams participate in a special tournament in Oc-tober called Dig Pink to benefit the Side-Out Foundation. This foundation wanted to do more than just raise awareness and fundraise, so they hired scientists and formed research teams to own, manage and operate science that actively searches for answers and treatment options for those living with metastatic breast cancer. “We don’t just fund research, we do re-search,” says Rick Dunetz, Founder and Executive di-rector of Side-Out. “We have helped nearly 1000 people with our research findings, and we share our data at every major breast cancer convention every year.” It is a simple concept. A team commits to making one of their matches a Dig Pink match. They pink out the gym, sell t-shirts, raise funds and spread the message of Side-Out. Bill Schreier, Wheaton Warrenville South’s Girls Varsity Volleyball Coach, has hosted a Dig Pink tournament several times for Side-Out. “The last few years we have paired with Plainfield North High School,” says Bill. “In total we have raised close to $25,000 in our past matches. Now, post-pandemic, we are ready to go at it again.” This year’s event will be played at Wheaton Warrenville South on Thursday, October 6th. Tickets can be purchased at the door. Besides 5 levels of com-petitive volleyball games, there will be raffle baskets, silent auc-tion items, a guest speaker and a bake sale. Naperville’s Neu-qua Valley High School and Metea Valley High School work hard every year to honor Breast Cancer Awareness with their Dig Pink tournament. This year the celebration will be hosted at Metea Valley on Thursday, October 13th. “We have had Dig Pink events in all 50 states and in over 5,000 schools,” says Rick. “We would love to unite many more volleyball teams with Side-Out in Oc-tober and work to make a significant and identifiable impact for those living with metastatic breast cancer.” View online more information on the Side-Out Founda-tion. www.side-out.org ABOUT THE WRITER Mindy Kyle is passionate about helping people discover what brings them joy and to live a full, healthy and happy life. Covid 19 and Hair Loss WARRENVILLE–If you’ve experienced the Covid 19 virus over the past 2 years, around 25% of you have likely experienced hair loss after the virus. Just when you think you’re past the worst and you’ve made it out without lasting damage, this experience can be frustrating, overwhelming, and downright scary. While the hair loss that accompanies Covid is not dan-gerous, hair is part of our identity for many people and it can be unsettling to know if and when it will stop, and if there’s anything you can do about it. Telogen Effluvium is described as a temporary shedding of hair after a major shock to the system. This shock to the system can push the hair follicles into a rest state that precedes the hair falling out. You can lose up to 3 times the amount of hair that you typically lose on any given day. The reason many people’s hair loss may not start for 2 to 3 months after ex-periencing an infection with Covid 19 is that the follicles remain in that resting phase for 2 to 4 months prior to falling out. Many people will regain this hair over time, but much depends on the state of one’s systemic health and oxidative stress (inflammation) heading into the hair loss event. Basically, the worse off your underlying immune and metabolic health is heading into Covid, the worse the hair loss experience can be and the harder it can be to fix. We do recommend ruling out additional root causes such as underlying thyroid conditions or autoimmune disease, as these can also be contrib-utors to hair loss. Once you’ve ruled out additional underlying root causes, you now have two choices. 1) You can wait and see. Many people will begin to see re-growth around the 3 to 6 month mark after the loss completely stops OR 2) you can take an active approach to make sure all systems are opti-mized, follicle health and stimulation is top priority for your system, and systems are in place to optimize hair growth. Glancer Magazine • OCTOBER 2022 • WESTERN SUBURBS • 63Microneedling with PRP for Scalp (Hair Restoration) WARRENVILLE–Microneedling and PRP are two different things, but when combined together it can pack a punch at restoring hair growth and creating healthy well-functioning follicles. Microneedling is the process of using fine needles with a very precise tool that penetrates the scalp at the proper depth and intensity in order to induce the formation of collagen, growth factors, and neovasculariza-tion (the formation of new blood vessels) in order to ensure optimal health and circulation at the follicle site. Additionally, the penetration of micro needling opens up micro abrasions on the scalp in order to allow other topical substances that promote hair growth to penetrate more deeply and therefore improve absorption and utilization. PRP is one of those growth substances we can apply to the scalp with microneedling in order to stimulate dermal papilla cells which play a very important role in hair growth. PRP is short for Platelet Rich Plasma. The process involves using a needle to remove a small amount of your blood, and then spinning that blood down to separate the platelets and growth factors from the red blood cells. When applied via microneedling or in-jection, the platelets and growth factors stimulate healing and tissue re-growth. The procedure is safe, quick, and most importantly, effective! We combine the above therapy with red light therapy which helps to stim-ulate and repair the hair follicles, and we often utilize peptide therapy in order to reduce systemic inflammation and stimulate regrowth at the fol-licle. The best way to determine your most effective course of action for hair regrowth is to schedule a consult with one of our functional nurse practitioners to determine the best course of action for your situation spe-cifically. Haunting Trails of Truth Whenever I hear the words based on a true story, I’m hooked! October always brings a sense of enchantment and mystery in the crisp cool air as the season changes from warmth and sunshine to crisp and somewhat chilled. With Halloween comes ghosts, ghouls, and trickery; yet, giggles, parties, and make believe, so a Ghost Those who know me well, also know I love haunted houses and everything Halloween. Opportunities like American Ghost Walks was another way for me to get my fill during this time of year. I had heard the stories of Aurora having been coined the "City of Cemeteries" and the rumors of the historic Round-house being haunted, but had to see for myself. Armed with EMF ghost meters, we were guided on a two hour ghost walk tour of Aurora's thriving downtown. We started at the railroad's haunted, 150-year-old roundhouse and were en-thralled with the recounts of children playing in the vacated building to tales of Walter Payton’s overnight workers. We meandered through Aurora's Riverwalk and Stolp Island, and the narratives continued of shocking murders, ghastly crimes and lost souls. We heard of leaps from the Leland Hotel, and treachery over the Fox River dam; and stories of concrete planter boxes with mystery contents beyond the flowering greens. Our EMF meters were relatively quiet through-out most of the night, but as we paused at our last stopping point, they all went off simulta-neously near a manhole in the city’s walkway. We each gazed at each other with big eyes as our guide had just an hour prior shared a story of a woman found deep under the streets. The tour was filled with interesting historical facts and a great view of the City of Lights that Aurora has so beautifully developed. Overview Combining a fascination with the paranormal and love of history to uncover the most haunt-ingly true tales of the paranormal across Amer-ica and providing entertaining tours that are full of true happenings, and fascinating facts. Do you like to entertain? How many people are usually in your kitchen at once? Once they have all of the information needed, the team will create a design to present to you, the homeowner, upon a visit to the Batavia showroom. Homeowners enjoy a stress-free process with this local one-stop home designer, as this top-rated Batavia business has everything needed to complete a kitchen or bathroom design– including labor for each project. Additionally, West DuPage Cabinets and Granite extends their discounts at the supply houses to their clients (specifically for appliances and plumbing fixtures). The entire process is coordinated with your designer who stays with you through the entire project, leaving the homeowners com-pletely satisfied throughout. INDUSTRY TRENDS Catherine noted that the industry is always changing with future trends leaning towards larger islands, coffee bars and entertain-ment spaces, including a wine refrigerator in the kitchen and more features to accommodate larger groups. LEADING THE WAY The company has received many awards and accolades through the years including Best of the Best in Kitchen and Bath Remod-eling 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021, in addition to Glancer Magazine’s ‘Best of the Best’ Kitchen Designer for Kane County in 2021. One of Catherine’s most cherished projects was when her team designed and built a first floor master suite for a client whose husband had MS and could no longer walk up the stairs. “The improved quality of both of their lives was a gift to see!” shared Catherine. -Photos by Mike Catuara West DuPage Cabinets and Granite (630) 414-2363 143 S. The Shoop Dogs of Geneva GENEVA–At a neighborhood Christmas party in 2013, four neighbors stopped talking about creating a band and started jamming, launching their first performance in 2014 at the Shoop Drive Block Party. Andi Balloun, Lead Vocals and Rhythm Guitar, Gabe Backstrom, Lead Guitar and Backing Vocals, George Posejpal, Bass Guitar and Backing Vocals, and Bill Engerman, Drums all live in Randall Square in Geneva and predominantly perform at local venues in Batavia, Geneva, Elburn, Wasco and Elgin at places like EvenFlow and the South Elgin Riverfest, with dreams of playing at Red Rocks, Soldier Field, Lollapalooza or Wembley some day. “We play a wide variety of stuff, including music with American heritage,” says Gabe. “Whether it’s country, blues, soul, South-ern rock, hard rock, or punk, what we do traces its lineage back to music that originated in the post-war, mid-20th century U.S. “We each bring a different sensibility to the band musically, which makes our sound kind of unique. George is a hard-rocker through and through. Bill’s inspiration comes from jazz. Andi’s background is as a folk musician; and I play lead guitar which creates a rollicking rhythm section. The band works well because of the friendship that has developed between them. They can anticipate the impromptu direction some-one might take and enjoy feeding off of each other's creative incli-nations. “We read each other and can communicate without saying words when we are on stage," George chimes in. Besides sharing a drink before each performance, the band always does a sound check with the song Angel from Montgomery. Once the show begins, they try to always incorporate some of their fa-vorite songs such as Chris Stapleton’s I Was Wrong, the Allman Brothers’ Whipping Post, and Neil Young’s Down by the River. Bringing their brand of entertainment to the Fox Valley area and making people smile, dance, shout and let loose is what The Shoop Dogs are most proud of. www.facebook.com/shoopdogs MEET THE BANDGlancer Magazine • OCTOBER 2022 • WESTERN SUBURBS • 85
