FALL FAMILY Autumn Attractions, Safe Trick or Treating, Fall Shopping & More Welcome to our October issue! Filled with all-things autumn highlighting family-friendly things to do, along with fall shopping trends & styles, indoor fun for those rainy days and more– you’ll love this issue! October is one of the happiest seasons for families, filled with lots of excitement– especially for kids. From pumpkin patches and apple or-chards, to haunted houses and Halloween parties, calendars fill up fast as residents get ready for spooktacular fun leading up to the big day– October 31. Though Halloween is one of the most anticipated holidays of the year for kids, it unfortunately can be a scary time for some. This is because of the food allergy epidemic that families are facing today and the risks involved for kids with allergies while trick-or-treating. This Halloween we encourage all homes to participate in the Teal Pumpkin Project which raises awareness of food allergies. Simply place a teal pumpkin on the porch to show trick-or-treaters that you also offer non-edible treats. Stay connected to www.GlancerMagazine.com all month long for daily posts, photos features, event highlights and more. Be sure to subscribe to your community so you don’t miss a thing! HEART HAVEN OUTREACH Bolingbrook I am a busy mom as many of you are. I have three children, two high-schoolers and a mid-dle-schooler. Besides juggling all their activities and different school programs, I am challenged each day with helping them navigate their emo-tional difficulties, relationships and their sense of self-worth. I can only hope that I am making a good impact on them. However, there are many teens in our communities who don’t have that person or role model they can turn to for support and advice, possibly hindering their emotional development. Heart Haven OutReach, fondly referred to as H₂O, steps up to the plate by reaching out to the youth of Bolingbrook, Romeoville and the surrounding areas to offer a safe-haven for adolescents experiencing emotional difficulties and challenges in their lives that might not otherwise have the resources they need to guide them. Conceived in 2004, H₂O offers physical, social, intel-lectual, emotional and spiritual components of devel-opment in their programs, including support groups, one-on-one mentoring, life skills, monthly community service programs, tutoring, and leadership building. “This program not only gives our youth in need a place to belong and somewhere to be loved without strings, but also gives opportunities for them to par-ticipate and connect in our community,” says Ryan Lawrence, Executive Director of Heart Haven Out-Reach. “We want youth that feel hopeless to come in and realize there is hope for them, and they have a purpose.” Weekly, the organization offers 13 different support and mentoring pro-grams and had 436 youth partici-pants attend, a number that increases each year. Heart Haven OutReach will be host-ing their Cheesy Pretzel 5K and 1 mile walk fundraiser (knot your aver-age 5K!) on Sunday, October 10th at the Promenade. To participate or volunteer, visit www.hearthavenoutreach.org/cheesy-pretzel-5k/ Volunteers are vital to the success of Heart Haven OutReach, whether it is becoming a mentor, facilitat-ing support groups, tutoring, participating in activities and field trips, or working behind the scenes. Guiding the development of strong character in our teens helps to promote a positive future for them and a strong community. For more information on Heart Haven OutReach pro-grams and other volunteer opportunities, visit www.hearthavenoutreach.org ABOUT THE WRITER Mindy Kyle is passionate about helping people discover what brings them joy and to live a full, healthy and happy life. Chalking It Over– Founded by Nina Sawica This Chicago-based start up helps celebrate the happy moments in life, one chalkboard at a time. The company’s founder, Nina Sa-wica, is a chalk extraordinaire filled with talent and creativity, in-spiring Chicagoland area women who are venturing out into the world of entpreprenuership. “While I have always loved helping friends and family celebrate major milestones in life, Chalking It Over of-ficially came to life in 2019 while work-ing on several menu boards and chalk signs in restaurants throughout the Chicago-land area. Chalking It Over has since expanded to service clients in the western suburbs, as well,” shared Nina. “It is always such a joy to help bring a client’s vision to life. Whether working on projects for local businesses, promoting up-coming concerts and events, or decorating signs to help clients capture special moments in their lives, there is cele-bration behind it all. Many clients choose to work collaboratively, sharing images of styles and messaging that they would like to be incor-porated into their design.” she added. While some of her favorite projects have been helping clients welcome guests to their weddings or coming up with cre-ative ways to announce that their family is growing, the most meaningful projects have allowed Nina opportuni-ties to share important messages through art. She shared that projects that have involved collaboration through-out the community to advocate on behalf of social justice needs have been the most impactful, with hopes of inspiring change for brighter tomorrows. -Photos Submitted To learn more about Chalking It Over, visit www.chalkingitover.com or email ChalkingItOver@gmail.com. 44 • WESTERN SUBURBS • OCTOBER 2021 • Glancer MagazineSPIRITUAL GUIDE AND INTUITIVE HEALER LISLE–October brings a sense of enchantment and mystery in the crisp cool air as the season changes from warmth and sunshine to crisp and somewhat chilled. With Halloween comes ghost, ghouls, and trickery; yet, giggles, parties, and make believe. This was the perfect time to meet with a local spiritual medium, psychic, and spiri-tual healer and learn more about myself and the unknown world beyond; so, a friend and I made an appointment sharing very little information ahead of time about who we were and our hopes for discovery. We both came with an openness to the process as we knew prior to Diana's Spiritual Awakening she was Police Officer and later the first female Police Sgt. in her Department. Dur-ing her career she worked in many areas of the police de-partment including Patrol Officer, Juvenile, Evidence Technician, DARE, Field Training Officer, Sgt. in Patrol, Su-pervisor Detective Unit, Public Information Officer. Diana has combined her expertise in Psychic and Mediumship cold case reading with her past in law enforcement to assist with Cold Cases and Active Missing Person Cases. Within minutes of entering the room, she identified an energy between us that connected our souls and proceeded to share some intimate details that no one would have known outside of ourselves. It was personal……and emotional for us both. It was an unexpected sensation, a weight that you could feel in your chest that was subsequently lifted when the message was revealed. There are no words that can truly describe the encounter, other than to say you just must experience it yourself. Those subtle symbols that surround us become mean-ingful – the feather, the owl, the cardinal, the flicker of lights………..the clarity, the closure, the communica-tion…..it was powerful. Overview Diana has worked on learn-ing the higher levels of the mind and mastered the abil-ity to hear the highest guid-ance possible from God/Source and will bring that guidance through in your in-dividual and group sessions. by Mindy Kyle Photos SubmittedMarisel Vera The Taste of Sugar NAPERVILLE–Chicago author Marisel Vera grew up in the Humboldt Park neighborhood with her five brothers and sisters and her parents who came to Chicago in the 1950’s from Puerto Rico to work in the factories. Her Latin American storytelling is inspired by Puerto Rico’s economic and political history and the challenges the citizens faced. “I was intrigued when I learned that during 1900-1903, over 5,000 Puerto Ri-cans left their homeland to work in the Hawaiian sugar plan-tations,” says Marisel. “I wanted to find out what caused this exodus.” Years of research that included books, memoirs, and newspapers both in Spanish and English has led her to the story in her newest novel. The Taste of Sugar tells the story of a young couple who leave Puerto Rico to work in the Hawaiian sugar plantations after they lose their coffee farm in the aftermath of the 1898 U.S. invasion and the 1899 San Ciriaco Hurricane. Called the “La-tino Grapes of Wrath” by the Washington Post and recognized as one of the 12 best Latino books of 2020 by NBC News, Vera is connecting readers of historical fiction with people who like a good story and interesting characters. The Taste of Sugar is available online on Amazon and Barnes and Noble and can be found at your favorite local bookstores. Follow Marisel at www.mariselvera.com . FITNESSHEALTH + WELLNESSDR. ALEESHA FISCHER What is Chiropractic? Chiropractic is a healthcare profession that focuses on the spine and other joints of the body, and their connection to the nervous system. The word chiropractic means “to be done by hand.” Chiropractors use adjustments to restore joint function and support the nervous system. Accidents, falls, and postural stress can cause subluxations, which are misaligned verte-brae within the spine from its normal position. Subluxations put pressure on the nerve roots and can decrease function of nerve signals between the body and the brain. Left unresolved, they can lead to chronic con-ditions. The weight of a dime on a spinal nerve can reduce transmission by as much as 60% (Chang Ha Suh, PhD. Spinal Biomechanics Expert). Chiropractic Care at Naperville Chiropractic and Massage also includes soft-tissue therapies, massage, lifestyle recommendations, fitness coach-ing and nutritional advice.
