BEAUTIFALL Autumn Attractions, Safe Trick or Treating, Fall Fashion & More Welcome to our October issue! Filled with all-things autumn highlighting family-friendly things to do, along with fall fashion trends & styles, fit-ness and more– you’ll love this month’s pages! October is one of the happiest seasons for families, filled with lots of excitement– especially for kids. From pumpkin patches and apple or-chards, to haunted houses and Halloween parties, calendars fill up fast as residents get ready for spooktacular fun leading up to the big day– October 31. Though Halloween is one of the most anticipated holidays of the year for kids, it unfortunately can be a scary time for some. This is because of the food allergy epidemic that families are facing today and the risks involved for kids with allergies while trick-or-treating. This Halloween we encourage all homes to participate in the Teal Pumpkin Project which raises awareness of food allergies. Simply place a teal pumpkin on the porch to show trick-or-treaters that you also offer non-edible treats. Happy Autumn and thanks so much for reading! Denise (Neicey) Knickrehm BARTLETT/GENEVA–Faith is the foundation of what is fashionable for Neicey. She grew up in the western sub-urbs and has been blessed to be surrounded by an amaz-ing family which includes her three children and eight grandchildren. Even with the recent loss of her son, she is encouraged knowing he is in a better place. She ex-presses her emotions through her fashion wearing uplift-ing, fun, romantic clothes with a boho trendy and somewhat country flair, accessorized with beautiful crosses and hats with inspiring words reminding her to let Jesus Take the Wheel Neicey loves all the hot Fall trends of neutrals mixed with animal prints, raggy bottoms, cowboy boots, swing skirts, romantic bohemian styles, and comfortable looks. She says hats are all the rage this season, especially suede and chenille with larger brims. Her home and store boasts fashionable chic décor with devotional enriching messages for daily life and she feels blessed to experience both in and out of her boutique and loves most of all her Woman’s Group at the Family Life Christian Center in Carol Stream. Everyday Neicey looks for what’s trending and the one consistent, trendiest fashion of the season is expression of kindness through words and actions. 10 • WESTERN SUBURBS • OCTOBER 2020 • Glancer MagazineCOVER STORYAutumn Style Influencersby Kristen Kucharski Photos Submitted

Natalie and Allison are from a small rural town in Charleston, Illinois. They brought their big dream of opening a boutique to Glen Ellyn and carried along with it the vibrant downtown charm and pulsating ambience of the friendly tight-knit com-munity they came from. Natalie graduated with a degree in fashion merchandise and tapped into her hands-on experiences to catapult the dream shared with her sister, Allison for owning a business together. The ladies are obsessed with the Fall popular trends of comfort including joggers, sweatshirts, anything cute and stylish with a relaxed fit; and the strong statement jeans are making this sea-son with the cool memorable jackets. Their simple, slightly edgy look is always classic and timeless that transitions easily from day into night. With four kids combined, Natalie and Allison love portable looks that can go from business to the soccer fields and then out to their fa-vorite places such as A Toda Madre, Fire and Wine, Maize and Mash, and the new wine bar KOZE which will be opening soon in Glen Ellyn. They love working out at Hardgainers, Rise, and FFC and shopping together at Good Roots and Enchantments. Fashion takes a whole new meaning when planning your wed-ding and Natalie is excited to have purchased her dream vin-tage inspired classic ceremony dress and sleek, sexy fun reception dress at Veiled by ChaCha in Glen Ellyn and Belle Atelier in Chicago. She is blending saturated hues of cool and neutral blush tones for her mix and match bridal party which was perfectly staged for a crisp Fall wedding on October 9th. Thankfully, both fashionable and flexible, the wedding is now April 2021 in Scotsdale, AZ!COVER STORY

She loves the creativity and freedom to play with fabric and colors which define individuals’ personalities and foresees handcrafts with beadwork and threads-work embroidery as a hot Fall fashion in greens, mint, burnt oranges and reds. “Fall is my favorite season and I love everything about it...Pickup and polish your boots and dress it up with your ethnic wear to give a fusion look and make a statement,” Ra-jashree says. “Scarfs and belts are an easy and a quick way of accessorizing any simple dress into a fashionable one.” Beyond fashion, COVID-19 has allowed Rajashree to culti-vate her culinary skills as well and has infused many kinds of cultural cuisine for new Fall flavors. She also loves gar-dening and has her own organic vegetable and flower gar-den at home. In her down time, she loves watching amazing movies and web series with her family; after all, Krishna’s Fashion House has its own designer label called “Lil-Doll”, named after Rajshree’s mother Lily and mother-in-law Dolly, which is an impressive series of ethnically designed sarees and lehengas which has the best of Benarasi and Kanjee-varam silk fabric. Only the best, named after the best of family! Drape and design are the hottest ethnic trends this season. COVER STORY

by Mindy Kyle Photos SubmittedLindsay Currie Scritch Scratch CHICAGO–This time of the year is perfect for a spooky story, and Chicago author Lindsay Currie has a new one for your middle-grade readers. Scritch Scratch follows the story of twelve-year-old Claire Koster who becomes haunted by a mysterious young boy after riding along on her father’s ghost tour bus in Chicago. The boy from the bus wants something, and Claire must figure out what…before it’s too late! The idea for Lindsay’s new book originated with the history behind the ‘ghost’ at the heart of it. “One of my personal pas-sions is obscure or forgotten Chicago history,” says Lindsay. “Although the book is fictional, I spent hours at the Chicago History Museum scouring materials to make sure I not only had my facts straight, but that I was including as much local history as I could in this book.” Scritch Scratch is not Lindsay’s first foray into writing ghost stories for the middle-grade readers. The success of her debut novel, The Peculiar Incident on Shady Street, paved the way for her to continue writing her spooky stories for kids. Lindsay Currie’s books can currently be found in bookstores and online retailers. KNOW A LOCAL AUTHOR?  We’d Love to Meet Them! FRIENDS OF PRENTICE 35th Annual Fundraising Benefit Themed “Still Together, At Home” to Be Held Virtually on Saturday, October 24th Friends of Prentice (FOP), a non-profit organization working in partnership with Northwestern Medicine Prentice Women’s Hospital to fund innovative and leading-edge research benefit-ting the lives of women, is host-ing its 35th annual fundraising benefit, themed Still Together, At Home. Due to Covid-19, this is the first year that the gala will be held virtually on Saturday, October 24, 2020. Shifting the gala online is a shining example of how the non-profit is adapting to the current climate in order to still raise critical funds needed to award doctors and clinicians grants needed to continue their life saving research across all areas of women’s health. Friends of Prentice is inviting Chicago's business, philan-thropic leaders and anyone interested in a fun night in, to ‘come together’ virtually to honor the healthcare community while raising critical funds for medical research. The goal of this year’s gala is to raise $750,000 that will be awarded to physicians and clinicians at Pren-tice Women’s Hospital. The new vir-tual format will invite guests to sign up and receive a link to view a live event from the comfort of their own homes and “host” a virtual table while bidding on once in a lifetime auction items. Since 1983, Friends of Prentice has raised over $20M and awarded grants to more than 100 researchers and clinical programs. FOP’s annual grants initiative has funded projects in the areas of Covid-19 research, gynecologic oncology, mental health, heart disease, disparities in access to care, diabetes, HIV, uterine and pelvic medicine, genetic biomarker research, home health care outreach and more. Funds raised during the Benefit go directly to research, education, and patient care programs at Prentice. Brisk autumn air, bucolic getaways, fall foliage, sweater weather and bonfire nights. Yes, please! For many mid-westerners, it’s a cherished time of year. With the changing seasons, there is an excitement that fills the air … a sense of hope and antici-pation. If you’re looking to bottle up some out-door fun and joy-filled memories this fall, stop by Abbey Farms in Aurora. This unique, family-friendly farm is owned by the monks of Marmion Abbey. After opening to the public in 1949, their love of community has proved evident through their various seasonal offerings, hos-pitality and stewardship. Once a corn farm and dairy operation, this property now boasts 220 acres of adventure and fun - including Kane County’s largest corn maze (12 acres!), a farmers market and pumpkin farm. Be sure to step inside the Nagel Farmstead Emporium Store to enjoy some baked goodies - try the award-winning apple cider donuts! Everything is baked on-site and sure to satisfy any sweet tooth. This year will mark 85 years since the first Christmas trees were planted at Abbey Farms. Come this holiday season, guests will have an opportunity to hunt around a 180-acre tree farm for the perfect tree! They offer ‘U-Cut’ and pre-cut Christmas trees. Check out Pine Tree Cafe this winter too, as Chef Dave will be serving up some tasty weekend favorites. And did you know that brewing beer is a centuries-old monastic tradition? AURORA–Since March, many of us have felt challenged to find a new definition of recre-ational and social activities. I have seen Zoom parties, Zoom fitness, virtual races, classes and club meetings among sev-eral in-person, social distanced activities. The Fox Valley Spe-cial Recreation Association (FVSRA), who provides a di-verse range of programs to en-able residents with disabilities of all ages to experience active, healthy, and play-ful lifestyles, was met with the same challenges. “Within the last few months, we’ve transitioned to virtual programs,” says Alex Engelhardt, FVSRA Executive Director. “We’ve provided over 75 virtual and modified in-person programs per week ranging from fitness, arts and crafts, educational programs, dances and more.” FVSRA, formed in 1976, is an extension of the Ba-tavia, Fox Valley, Geneva, Oswegoland, St. Charles, Sugar Grove Park Districts and South Elgin Parks and Recreation Department. By pro-viding support, fitness, education, and recreation to over 1200 individuals with disabilities a year, they empower their participants to reach their max-imum capabilities using the least restrictive envi-ronment. “FVSRA provides a sense of purpose and feeling of belonging,” says Alex. She explains that along with support, they focus on volunteerism within their programs including showing apprecia-tion for our first responders, being a companion to someone in a nursing home, hosting a coat drive, or cleaning up a park after and event. “We rely on our community for support and are so thankful we can support them in return.” Funding for scholarships and spe-cial projects such as the Carolyn Nagle Sensory Room and the Dr. William Kelly Resource Library comes from the Fox Valley Spe-cial Recreation Foundation (FVSRF) which typically hosts two large scale fundraisers throughout the year, but both were canceled due to Covid-19. FVSRF is looking to raise funds and awareness on a smaller, more intimate level through Friend-raisers. They have created three Friend-raiser kits including a Bags Tournament, Outdoor Movie and Left Center Right game, or you can create your own that is unique to you and your friends. They are also looking for dedicated vol-unteers to assist with programs and special events. Maybe you have a passion you would like to teach to their participants, or you have time to be a lis-tening ear to someone in need. For more information on FVSRA and their pro-grams or volunteering, visit www.fvsra.org and if hosting a Friend-raiser is interesting to you, visit www.fvsrf.org/host-a-friendraiser. COMMUNITY LIVINGFITNESSMONTHLY COLUMNALL AGES AIRBORNE! The air up there in the clouds is very pure and fine, bracing, and delicious. And why shouldn’t it be? —it is the same the angels breathe. — Mark Twain, Roughing It, Chapter XXII, 1886. Darien resident, Jaro Krupa otherwise known as Jaratron, thoroughly enjoys taking people of all ages in the air to experience the freedom of free flight while ensuring safety via a tandem ride with a certified instructor. He has taken his own children as young as 5 years old and loves growing his flying family through sharing the joys of paragliding. His enthusiasm and comfort are con-tagious, and you feel nothing but secure as you take flight. Having been skydiving, hang-gliding, jet packing, and cliff jumping – I was so excited to find paragliding within an hour drive of my house. When I arrived, I met Zipper and Frenchie and discovered that everyone gets a nickname after their first flight, so was eager to claim my own. I could not have imagined how easy it would be to run behind a pickup truck while tethered to a parachute that quickly grabbed the air and lifted us off the ground. I felt like a kid again as I giggled when my feet defied gravity and the wind breezed across my face. Freedom. That was the feeling. Freedom of stress, freedom of worry, freedom of anything that had previously consumed my mind. Amid 2020, I was relaxed….and it felt amazing. Jaro passed the toggles to me and guided me to take control of our destiny. He pointed out the clouds and swirls and trained me how to read the sky to gain direction. He was easygoing and confident. It was amazing to hear about the young kids he pro-vided tandem rides too, as well as how far he had traveled independently. A truly unique and close to home experience that makes you feel a million miles from reality. I earned my wings, and earned my nickname - only to be disclosed to fellow paragliders! Overview Premier paragliding and powered paragliding school in the Midwest providing tandem rides, equipment, and lessons. West suburban and Dar-ien resident Jaro Krupa guides paragliding, powered paragliding, and kitesurfing and hopes you will become part of their flying family! 46 • WESTERN SUBURBS • OCTOBER 2020 • Glancer Magazine Karisma Boutique The ‘Best of the Best’ 2020 Reader’s Choice Awards Business of the Year Chosen from Thousands of Entries Submitted by West Suburban Residents, Introducing Karisma Boutique of Naperville Very similar to the challenging times of today, back in 2009 when Ginger Makowski decided to open her store in downtown Naperville, she was also in the midst of an unsettled time in her personal life. Mother of three, Ginger had always thought she would start a charitable organization and volunteer when she retired, but when circumstances shifted, she dug deep and pursued her dream of opening a retail store. She did not have a solid plan and just ran with it and along the way found it to be the most satisfying thing she has ever done outside of raising her children. Karisma Boutique, Naperville’s “hidden gem”, was named after her daughter Jen Hoeft who has amazing charisma and travels with Ginger to worldwide trade shows to purchase unique apparel and accessories, jewelry, scarves, purses, hats, shoes, home decor, candles, lotions, and various gift items. “We are usually buying weekly which brings in new arrivals a few times a week,” Ginger says. “It's been a challenge recently as I like to hand pick our merchandise, but I have had to rely online at this time which makes it difficult. We pride our-selves in exceptional customer service, incredible selections, affordable pricing, and also guarantee our product 100%. Satisfaction is extremely important to us.” This has been an extremely difficult year for the Boutique and without the im-promptu live online shows followed by personal delivery and curbside service, Ginger is not sure she would have made it through. She is eternally grateful for her customers and staff for keeping the dream alive and she is just as surprised as the next to see masks as the fashion statement of 2020! Ginger consciously gives back to the community by attending many charity events and hosting in store parties for her customers. She thoroughly believes it is not always about making the sale, as it is to bond a relationship that is treasured forever. THE NAPERVILLE ART OF INCLUSION NAPERVILLE–The Naperville Art of Inclusion group started in June of 2020, shortly after George Floyd's death in May. A visitor to Nap-erville, Tyler Marcus, from Downers Grove, reacted to a mural that he felt did not reflect diversity. Since that time, Marcus has met with Century Walk's Brand Bobosky and has learned that there are 35 other pieces of artwork in Naperville's Century Walk collection that do reflect diversity. The Art of Inclusion committee painted its inaugural piece of inclu-sive-focused art entitled “Naperville Together” on Saturday, Sep-tember 26, on the Naperville Township Parking lot at 139 Water Street. The live street painting concept was inspired by Naperville Central sophomore Mia Hernandez. With the support of Art Committee chairs Sophia Forero and Crystle Saylor, an amazing plan was de-veloped by project leads Sangeeta Pande and Julie Kulak. In ad-dition to the artists above, contributing artists also include Dr. Alicia McCareins, Sarah Knight Adamson, Brand Bobosky, Eddie Bedford, Carolyn Finzer, Mauricio Forero, Rebecca Hernandez, Madeline Lei, Zhuyu Lei, Rich Lo, Tyler Marcus, Victoria May, Evelyn Murillo, Ramya Roddom, Peter Thaddeus, and Sarah Uy. With a continued focus on bringing Naperville Together, the local community was invited to participate in the artistic process by plac-ing their handprint in the letter N at any time between 9 am, and 1 pm. A welcome ceremony was held at 1 pm to thank the sponsors and community leaders for their contributions and efforts resulting in this concept becoming reality. Art of Inclusion’s mission is to create public art that reflects the diversity of Naperville and pro-motes unity and inclusion in our community.At of Inclusionby Lindy Kleivo Photos by Joel Vissia50 • WESTERN SUBURBS • OCTOBER 2020 • Glancer Magazine
