Glancer Magazine • NOVEMBER 2022 • WESTERN SUBURBS • 13Meet Theressa DuBois of Aurora, Founder of the Deaf Welcome Foundation AURORA–Through the years, Theressa has met a lot of celebrities, business leaders and influencers; however, no one has inspired her more than the Coordinator of Senior and Dis-ability Services for the City of Aurora, Katrina Boatright, who brings local agencies and res-idents together and makes it her business to hear complaints, implement programs and ef-fectuate real change. This fully aligns with Theressa’s belief system and the core reason as to why she founded the Deaf Welcome Foundation in 2004 as a 501(c)(3) Organization for Sign Language TV, Media, Music, Ministry & Film. “My goal is and has always been to ensure the Deaf have equal access to products, services and amenities,” she says. “I set up supportive services to negate the linguistic encumbrances.” In 2022, Theressa launched the Deaf Welcome TV Network, on Roku, along with the Deaf Welcome TV mobile app for On De-mand. “Deaf inclusive TV programs allow for signers and non-signers to enjoy enter-tainment together,” she adds. “We have new shows coming, but already have more than 14,000 downloads!” Theressa loves bridging the gap between Deaf Culture and the hearing world. “It’s a wonderful feeling to equip busi-nesses and organizations with Deaf-inclu-sive commercials and other resources and watch them make Deaf Welcome. It’s an even better feeling when I see Deaf consumers enjoy linguistic freedom, inde-pendence, added security and respect.” Always expanding her reach, Deaf Wel-come is now open in Fox Valley Mall offering Sign Language classes for store owners and employees, as well as shoppers who stop in everyday! Theressa is constantly immersing herself in the community and also joined Home Care ensuring deaf and hard-of-hearing sen-iors have access to companion care, personal care and skilled nursing from those who sign or utilize virtual interpreters. In the rare moments she can relax, Theressa enjoys the Naper-ville Riverwalk, Suzette’s in Wheaton, cardio drumming at her local gym, and sign dancing! WOMEN INSPIRED

CHARLES–Jill Card opened Jeans and a Cute Top after years of working in retail and corporate sales jobs, wearing boring suits, un-comfortable panty hose, and predictable white dress shirts. The name was in-spired by her first date with her husband when she asked, “What should I wear?” and her husband replied: “Jeans and a cute top.” When Jill was getting ready for that first date, she didn’t have a great pair of jeans or a cute top in her closet and had to borrow an outfit from her sister, a flight attendant with a much more fun wardrobe. As she got older, Jill couldn’t find any great jeans for women in their 30s and 40s. Stores catered to teenagers or grandmas. The unflattering ‘Mom’ jeans filled in that age gap. Now, in Jill’s closet, you’ll find about 40 pairs of jeans. She has 8-10 pairs in regular rotation. Her go-to, favorite pair is the Gia from Liverpool—the denim is super soft and keeps its shape. Jeans & A Cute Top is the solution for women who don’t want to look ridiculous trying to dress like their daughters but also refuse to settle for shapeless lounge wear. Jill hand selects every item in the store, going to trade shows looking for style over trend, and finding affordable, beautiful clothes that work for all women, not just size 0 models. You will find Jill working the floor of one of her shops every day—she is committed to changing the world for women one great fitting pair of jeans at a time. www.jeansandacutetop.com Expires 11-30-22Shop Gallery

ENTHUSIASTIC & TRUSTWORTHY Nineteen years ago, following a career in the hospitality, fitness and bookstore industries in the U.K., @properties Christie’s International Real Estate luxury Realtor Kim Scott moved to the U.S., ready for change and eager to fulfill her sense of purpose and drive. “I loved how this got me out and about,” she recalls. “I had a lot to learn in a new country.” Scott says that her biggest accomplishment has been going from not knowing anyone in the U.S. to deriving nearly all her business from friends and referrals, an evolution that has brought her the Top 1% award in both sales and volume in Chicagoland from the Main-street Organization of Realtors. A Certified Luxury Home Marketing Specialist from the Institute for Luxury Home Marketing, Scott at-tributes her success to her forward thinking and determination. “It’s a vibrant market,” she says. “You need to hustle.” Scott believes that clear and concise communication is at the heart of every successful real estate transaction. Her up-to-date industry knowledge and years of experience allow her to make the buying or listing process an easy one for her clients. Beyond her passion for her work, Scott is a global traveler. Her last trip (pre-COVID, of course) took her to Vietnam, where she back-packed from Saigon to Da Nang to Hoi An to Hanoi. She is also an avid runner, having twice qualified for the Boston Marathon and run-ning 15 marathons in all. “I may be a retired runner,” Scott remarks, “but never say never.” And just when you thought she might have some free time, she also supports the Agape Orphanage in India, which helps poor children orphaned by the AIDS pandemic. She has been married for more than 20 years and has two children, Georgina (27), who lives in Sydney, Australia, and William (25), who is following his mother into Chicago real estate.-Kristen Kucharski, Photos by Mike Catuara CONTACT KIM Kim Scott @properties 1003 S. PURPOSEFULLY DRIVEN Debbie’s community ties since 1995 gives her an enthusiastic edge when working with buyers and sellers. Her professional, down to earth approach with unwavering commitment to her clients, has enabled her to build up a vast network of referrals over the past 8 years. Attention to detail combined with an exceptional understanding of the mar-ketplace, genuine care for people, attentive listening skills, and dedication to fulfilling client’s goals is abundantly evident. “I LOVE people and the journey that takes us from A to Z. I believe we all have a story to tell, and that story begins at home,” Debbie shares. “For much of my adult life, I was known as a working stay-at-home PTA mom/wife, and was led to a new full time career as a 50 year-old single mom. It took perseverance, patience, and trust in the process to transition to Debbie Lendino, john greene Realtor, trusted advisor extraordinaire!” Debbie’s strong ability to negotiate and problem solve support her business that has been predominantly built on referrals, open homes, and networking. She is confident, yet humble; compassionate, yet persistent; knowledgeable, yet always learning. She relies on jgR’s tools to maintain a powerful post close process for her buyers and sellers and has an impressive social media presence that aids in marketing her listings. With the Naperville and western suburban market tilted to sellers from a supply/demand imbalance, the housing market overall has peaked and is headed toward stabilization. Area home price appreciation is up almost 14%, and a slight cool is a good sign for Debbie’s buyers who are coming off the sidelines, even with interest rates on the rise. “Utilization of john greene Realtor's technology is unmatched,” she says. “Always fresh, always something NEW, excellent!,” Debbie says. “I love being a part of an organization that supports each other - a cheerleader to new agents, mentoring small groups, collaborating with business partners, brainstorming with outside agents, networking, volunteering...these all align with my purpose!” As a top performing agent, it brings Debbie great joy to build on her referral base and provide an elite experience for her clients. Café Liberty Wheaton This month holds Vet-eran’s Day, the day to honor the men and women that have served this country proudly. There have been many founda-tions built and fundrais-ers held to assist our veterans in need, and we could always use more. The Dan Gibbons Foun-dation, best known for their Annual Turkey Trot, a 5K race on Thanksgiving Day in Elmhurst with 7-8,000 runners, has found a different avenue to as-sist our veterans – offering them an opportunity to build a lifetime career. The Dan Gibbons Turkey Trot Foundation (DGTTF) began in 1984 as a vessel to raise funds for food pantries and emergency shelters for Du-Page County. In the fall of 2017, the foundation announced its plans for Café Liberty, a new culi-nary skills training program that professionally trains veterans who are unemployed or underem-ployed for a lifetime career in the culinary field. “Rather than be an organization that feeds some-one for a day, why not train them to cook and they can eat for a lifetime,” says Dan Gibbons, DGTTF Executive Director. Café Liberty, located at 120 E. Liberty Dr. in Wheaton, is open to both veterans and adult family members of the veterans. “We believe that when one family member serves the military, the whole family serves,” says Dan. The eleven-week program is offered up four times a year with roughly ten people per class. Executive Chef Cheryl Corrado, former Executive Chef at CHIC (Cooking and Hospitality Institute of Chicago – Le Cordon Bleu) helped them develop the program and served as their first instructor. In May 2019, one of their first graduates, Billy Gordon, a twenty-year US Navy veteran, was promoted to their current Executive Chef and Chef Instructor. The program is funded by catering two days a week to FT Portfolios; however, there is still a need for public donations. “Our goal,” says Dan, “is to give each family the resources and training to become self-sufficient and improve their quality of life.” If you would like to know more about Café Liberty, donating to the program or sponsoring a student, visit them at www.cafeliberty.org ABOUT THE WRITER Mindy Kyle is passionate about helping people discover what brings them joy and to live a full, healthy and happy life. HELLO DONUT IN ELMHURST There is no denying it … America has a love affair with donuts. Cake. Old Fashioned. Cream-filled. Yeast. Glazed. Sour Cream. Jelly-filled. Fritters. Powdered. Crullers - the list goes on. So why the obsession? Perhaps, it’s nostalgic for some (after all, ‘tis the season for pumpkin picking and apple-cider donuts!). Perhaps, it’s the fact that it goes hand-in-hand with our morning coffee fix. Or perhaps, the answer is simple - they are delicious. Just as our love of donuts is unwavering, so is our love for artisanal goods. A yearning for handmade, quality ingredients, authenticity, originality and ‘storytelling’ continues to propel today’s economy. Hello Donut, in Elmhurst, is making an art out of selling donuts. HD, an artisanal donut shop that specializes in international flavors, opened its doors July 2022. Gone are the days of jelly, vanilla and chocolate. The menu features 45 flavors each month - a mix of tra-ditional, chef-featured and seasonal creations. October’s menu will release a mix of sweet and savory donuts, including: apple cider, oreo cookie, gold bar, greece (whipped truffle feta with hot honey!), mango lassi (Indian inspired), coquito (Puerto Rican inspired) and mochi (Filipino inspired). This family-owned business strives to bring cultural inspiration, cre-ativity and never-before-seen creations to its recipes. And, most im-portantly, everything is made from scratch. Whether it’s sweet or savory, vegan, gluten-free, culturally inspired or seasonal … there’s something for everyone. Local favorites: mango tajin, birthday cake and old-fashioned glazed! Deliveries are now available via Grubhub, Uber Eats and DoorDash. Stop by or order online - you donut want to miss out. Immunity and Anti-Aging That time of year is upon us again. Kids are back to school, days are shorter, less time outdoors, and stress of the season is near. Not-Coincidentally, coughs and runny noses will spike, sluggishness and weight gain will creep up, and inev-itably stress will increase. Anti-aging is often thought of as cutting-edge high-end med-icine, but overlooked is the true essence of “anti” “aging”, which is healthy aging. Aging is guaranteed. Healthy aging, is far from. A strong immune system is directly related to healthy aging. The general foundation of a healthy immune system is consistent & effective stress mitigation. Get back to the basics. Quality restful sleep, balanced exercise, nutri-tious foods in appropriate quantitates, mindfulness & doing things that make you happy. Those are the counterbalances to the inevitable stresses to life, that generally help maintain a strong immune system, and enable us to maintain health as we age. I don’t advocate for skipping the fun around holidays for the sake of “healthy aging”. Staying up late, a few extra calories, and cramming in for family parties are a part of what make the holidays fun. However, they are additional stressors on your body and your immune system. To counter these stress-ors, you can take immune supplements like vitamin d3, vita-min C, zinc, and supplemental minerals. A couple extra days of intermittent fasting can go along way. Being healthy through the holiday season will make them that much more enjoyable, and the key to that is maintaining a strong immune system & mindfulness throughout. They prioritize environmental responsibility by striving to be a zero-waste restaurant, using fully compostable packaging, and recy-cling its used oil into biodiesel fuel. “As a pescatarian myself, I found it very difficult to find quality sea-food without a white tablecloth and the cost associated with it. At Brown Bag, we’re here to make great seafood accessible to all,” says Donna Lee, Founder and CEO. Guests fill out a menu card to customize their meal starting by se-lecting from a variety of proteins such as grilled salmon, shrimp, or the rotating daily catch. Retired grade schoolteacher Willie Etta Wright used to encourage her second and fourth grade students to enjoy reading and ex-pressing themselves through creative writing. After thirty-five years in West Aurora School District 129, she left the classroom and began her writing journey by taking creative writing classes, writing news and magazine articles and eventually authoring sev-eral books. Wright’s various topics include retired teachers sub-stituting, the ministry of her father, the late Bishop William Haven Bonner, and children’s literature. Her new book, Grandpa Lou, What Can You Do? is her second in her children’s series. Coming off her first children’s book, Grandma Mable, Are You Able? - a book about a grandmother who takes on the challenges of raising her grandson, her second book highlights a grandfather who is taking charge of his granddaughter as well. “My inspiration for writing this book came from what I have observed about the love and sacrifice that grandparents give to and for their grand-children,” says Wright. “I was sparked by my personal interaction and observation of grandparents who struggled to raise their grandchildren, whether in my church or in school.” Grandpa Lou, What Can You Do? can currently be found on Ama-zon and Barnes and Noble. Glistening Glass Gifts I admittedly color like a toddler, draw like a kindergartener, and craft like a first grader. I possess many talents; however, art is not one of my natural abilities. I have always been intrigued by glassworks. My grandfather used to blow glass for a living many years ago. I am amazed at how heat can significantly change the shape of glass without shattering it everywhere. I could have never imagined I would be able to design, shape, and mold a twelve inch stick of Italian glass, only millimeters in diameter, into one of a kind custom glass beads. Victoria, a St. Charles resident and the owner of TinkerBelz Art in Geneva patiently and skillfully taught our small class the art of melting and layering Italian soft glass in a 2000° flame to create our own personal masterpieces. As she demonstrated what was soon to be our task at hand, I giggled in disbelief that I could possibly mimic her actions; yet, I was so inspired by her boutique of handmade creations that surrounded me. The workshop was filled with glistening glass beads, orna-ments, jewelry, serving utensils, and more. It was hard to be-lieve they were all made from a simple 12 inch stick. As we donned our safety goggles and posi-tioned ourselves in front of our individual flame throwers, we quickly discovered the art of glass melting can be forgiving when armed with the right knowledge of correcting a dollop, a drop, or a mishaped form. As I made each bead, I gained confidence, and my creativity began to sore. I felt so peaceful in the workshop which is completely the opposite of the onset of anxiety that typi-cally arises when I’m presented with an art project. We got bolder with our shapes, more unique in our designs, and encouraged to try new methods. I actually made beads that I would wear in public!! My friend made beads to fabricate a custom handle for a cake server. This is a one-of-a-kind experience which makes the perfect gift to give or gift to make! With the glass that students decide not to keep, Victoria also creates beads that she do-nates Beads of Courage. This End Up of Naperville NAPERVILLE–This End Up is a six piece band rockin out pop-ular rock and pop music songs with a hint of country, while also putting their mark on tunes made famous by artists like Aretha Franklin, Pink, Kelly Clarkson, John Mellencamp, Bruno Mars, and One Republic. Stefanie Brinegar (Lead Vocals), Anthony George (Vocals and Guitar), Al Brown (Guitar), Matt Soukal (Bass), Dave Felten-berger (Keyboards), and Edie Rosner (Drums) combine their musical talents and vocal harmonies to get the crowds moving at places such as Evenflow in Geneva, Potters and Quigley’s in Naperville; Rivers Edge in Aurora, and the House of Blues in Chicago. “I think one of our biggest accomplishments as a band is the fact that we are still going strong after 16 years,” Stefanie shares. “We are extremely fortunate to have a strong bond within our group, as well as an amazing following.” MEET THE BANDby Kristen Kucharski Photos Submitted88 • WESTERN SUBURBS • NOVEMBER 2022 • Glancer Magazine

This End Up was named from the simple well-known logo that can be seen on many products to indicate the correct positioning. Iron-ically, it holds similar meaning to which direction this band is going as they are on their way to the top, having performed on the Fox stage at the Taste of Chicago, as well as in Las Vegas, Arizona, and Indianapolis. They feature a wide mix of music with personal favorites high-lighted in each set. Al appreciates his guitar solo in "Can't You See" by the Marshall Tucker Band; Anthony thrives executing “Pur-ple Rain” by Prince; and Stefanie enjoys singing anything by Pink or Lady Gaga; as well as any opportunity to sing Spanish songs. “My mom is from Spain and was a professional singer and fla-menco dancer, so getting the chance to sing in Spanish always feels very special to me,” she says. This End Up feels an immense amount of gratitude for being able to do what they love with who they love every day. www.teuband.com MEET THE BANDGlancer Magazine • NOVEMBER 2022 • WESTERN SUBURBS • 89
