Madeline (23), Bailey (20), Carter (16), Hannah (12), and Caroline (8) each receive Christmas PJs and wear them while watching the kick-off holiday movie that evening. It was also always the perfect day to relax prior to the many practices and performances of The Nutcracker with DanceWest Ballet in Naperville where Madeline performed for 13 years and was joined by her little sister Hannah for 4 years. The Snow Queen, Clara, Small Dancing Girl, Dancing Angel, Baby Mouse, and Sugar Plum Fairy were household names in the King house for many years. Still time was always made for traditional holiday staples such as com-memorative ornaments, Santa visits, Christmas cookie baking, and dec-orating gingerbread houses; as well as venturing to different suburbs to see the variety of light displays and events. The King Family always makes certain to end each adventure with hot chocolate or coffee and celebrate Christmas Cheer in a Cup! ON THE COVER

A few Saturdays each December, their family of five, along with the members of One Line Church in Wheaton make cards for local firefighters and police. Then, on Christmas Eve morning, they caravan to all the police stations in Wheaton and Glen Ellyn delivering Mariano's donuts and thank you cards. Their annual festivities also include the One Line Church Christmas Vil-lage which embraces the holiday magic with real life reindeers, horse and carriage rides, photos with Santa, ornament and holiday cookie making – and best of all – it’s free for the entire community. Megan carries this tradition on today, in addition to starting new traditions with her husband Robert. For the past nine (9) years, Robert and Megan have raised over $21,000 for the Muscular Dystrophy Association in honor of one of their close family members who suffers from MD by encour-aging free will donations for those that come to enjoy their Christmas light display at 913 E. Evergreen Street in Wheaton each year. Robert oversees the lights - designing them, programming them, and making them twirl and move about to music. The Krause Family of Naperville No matter how old Hailey (16) and Hannah (12) get, they enjoy maintaining their annual holiday traditions with their BFFs Danielle (17) and Sailor (14). The four have a long standing tradition of coloring Easter eggs followed by an Easter egg hunt, carving and decorating pumpkins at Halloween, and apple picking at Kuiper’s Family Farm; however, the tradition they love the most is baking cookies for Santa and decorating Gingerbread houses. They purchase the pre-assembled Gingerbread houses from Whole Foods and ensure everything they use to decorate is edible. The girls have their "must-have" candies, such as red and green Dots, M&Ms, Gumdrops, Pepperidge Farm Gingerbread family cookies, marshmallow Peeps snowmen and trees, coconut flakes, and decorat-ing icing. They complete the houses on disposable baking tins for easy portability and ensure to take the grand finale commemorative photo, complete with icing mustaches on their faces! LaRae Mudd of Naperville As a 29-year Naperville resident and a Realtor for HomeSmart Realty Group, LaRae knows all to well that a house is not a home until it is filled with per-sonal memories. Drawing on these emotions, LaRae began gifting com-memorative ornaments to her children, Meghan (23) and Michael (21), each year since they were young. Each adornment would represent a special activity or event from the year prior, so when they put up their tree each Christmas, they could reminisce the fond memories and relive the joy each ex-perience conveyed again and again. Now at 23, Meghan has her own apartment. She will take all her ornaments to decorate her own very first tree. As kids mature, they take on family traditions and Meghan surprised her mom by gifting her an ornament commemorating LaRae’s late husband – a sweet and emotional gesture that encompassed a lifetime of remembrances. Milestone events are encapsuled forever and recollected with the spirit of each season. ON THE COVERGlancer Magazine • NOVEMBER 2020 • WESTERN SUBURBS • 21

NAPERVILLE–Veterans Day is an opportunity for our country and our communities to honor and support the men and women in the military who have put their lives on the line serv-ing our country so we may enjoy our freedom. However, there really is a constant need to support our troops and their families besides honoring them on just one day. It was a sim-ple request from a local mom wanting her son to be honored after returning from deployment and then subsequent requests that in-spired the creation of Operation Welcome You Home (OWYH) in 2007. Each request became a mission to create a gathering of as many people as possible to show their support. Soon, OWYH also began taking requests to create a festive send-off for those men and women being de-ployed. “When I coordinated gatherings for families and saw their tears and emotions of joy, I knew I had to continue this mission of supporting our servicemen and women,” says Donna Morsovillo, OWYH Founder and CEO. “It always amazes me the mul-titude of local residents and dignitaries who gather for someone they have never met and sometimes even bring gifts.” She mentioned that former Nap-erville Mayor George Pradel never missed a mis-sion when it was a local event and occasionally would go to the surrounding towns as well. OWYH is a local volunteer organization that relies upon the generous donations of time, talent and re-sources of their volunteers, supporters and donors. Besides donations, funds are raised annually at their events. The 10th Annual Run for the Brave 5K Run/Walk/Ruck is cur-rently scheduled for May 29, 2021. This year the race was changed to a virtual race but still considered extremely successful in spite of the circumstances. Do-nations are used to help Veterans and their families in a variety of ways, including mobile wheel-chairs, riding lawn mowers, Action Trackers, airfare for parents to visit their Wounded Warrior, temporary financial assistance, burial ex-penses and food. During the pandemic, their goal was to assist the VA hospital who experienced low assistance with regards to PPE supplies. “As a re-sult of our generous supporters and donors, we were able to donate $7,500 worth of PPE supplies,” says Donna. Operation Welcome You Home would like to per-sonally thank each and every serviceman and woman who protect our freedom and their families for their sacrifices. To volunteer, donate or to find out when to come out to support one of their events of honor, visit and register on their website at www.welcomeyouhome.org. Why are schools closed? What’s a pandemic? These questions and more are an-swered in Oswego author Colleen LeMaire’s sixth book in her I HAVE children’s book series, I Have to Stay Home: A Kid-Friendly Story About the COVID-19 Pandemic. Colleen created The I HAVE Series to take the “scary” out of new scenarios and help calm fears in an age-appropriate manner. “In many ways, the pandemic has disrupted, shifted and changed chil-dren’s lives more than anyone else,” says Colleen. “I’m a big be-liever that when you don’t explain situations to kids, they are left to their own imaginations…and many times the conclusions they gather are a whole lot worse than what is actually happening.” Consulting a nurse, a doctor, a therapist and a school counselor to ensure she was using appropriate language and correct medical ter-minology, Colleen has written easy-to-understand explanations, tips to stay healthy and creative ideas to have fun while staying safe for this unique time in history. Other books in The I HAVE Series include, I Have Two Homes, which helps explain divorce, as well as I Have a Stepmom and I Have a Stepdad. Then came I Have Two Moms, and I Have Two Dads, representing kids with the same-sex parents. Colleen’s books are available on both Amazon and her website www.theihaveseries.com. Mother of three, Ginger had always thought she would start a charitable organization and volunteer when she retired, but when circumstances shifted, she dug deep and pursued her dream of opening a retail store. She did not have a solid plan and just ran with it and along the way found it to be the most satisfying thing she has ever done outside of raising her children. Karisma Boutique, Naperville’s “hidden gem”, was named after her daughter Jen Hoeft who has amazing charisma and travels with Ginger to worldwide trade shows to purchase unique apparel and accessories, jewelry, scarves, purses, hats, shoes, home decor, candles, lotions, and various gift items. “We are usually buying weekly which brings in new arrivals a few times a week,” Ginger says. “It's been a challenge recently as I like to hand pick our merchandise, but I have had to rely online at this time which makes it difficult. We pride our-selves in exceptional customer service, incredible selections, affordable pricing, and also guarantee our product 100%. Satisfaction is extremely important to us.” This has been an extremely difficult year for the Boutique and without the im-promptu live online shows followed by personal delivery and curbside service, Ginger is not sure she would have made it through. She is eternally grateful for her customers and staff for keeping the dream alive and she is just as surprised as the next to see masks as the fashion statement of 2020! Ginger consciously gives back to the community by attending many charity events and hosting in store parties for her customers. She thoroughly believes it is not always about making the sale, as it is to bond a relationship that is treasured forever.
