eMOM: From Blogging to eLearning This month we are celebrating eMoms, and it seems that these days every mom in town is an eMom. Women throughout the western suburbs have been multi-tasking in the virtual world now more than ever before. From overseeing schooling for their kids via eLearning, to attending Zoom meetings for work and even cocktail time with their BFFs– eMoms are as tech savvy as ever, whether they intended to be or not. This month’s pages celebrate 3 eMoms who are making a difference virtually in their community, and other heartfelt stories including a local blogger who is living through the COVID-19 ‘Shelter in Place’ with terminal cancer ad one of our Glancing the Gallant resident tributes. We also highlight eSupport Groups for local area moms– from facebook social scenes to virtual meet ups for hobbyists – and fabulous eGifts for moms. Many shops are offering curbside pickup or complimentary delivery, so be sure to visit each website of your area favorites and follow their facebook page to see how you can help support these businesses. As the community slowly begins to open back up, please remain considerate of others and do your part to help keep everyone happy and healthy during this unimagineable time. COVER STORYPLAINFIELD FAMILY MAKES THE MOST OF THE ‘SHELTER IN PLACE’ ORDER It’s a good thing the Martzolf family’s motto is, “Don't be afraid to embarrass yourself,” because with three teenagers in the house, embarrassment can come as easy as standing in the same room together, much less participating in thematic family dinners to pass the time of “sheltering in place”! Danny (18), Katie (16), and Karly (13) have taken their new supper routine in stride with their parents Jennifer, an ambassador for the Stella & Dot Family of Brands and Eric, Assistant Principal at Hinsdale South High School. The 17-year Plainfield residents and members of Holy Spirit Catholic Community in Naperville have thoroughly enjoyed their quarantine time together. “It's crazy how much family time we are getting with three teens in the house when normally we would be running in three different directions - so we are embracing it,” Jennifer says. “We do daily family walks, board games, and movies together too.” This time at home has also given them a chance to clear the clutter and each day they clean and organize one area of the house. When Katie suggested doing a Family Theme Dinner - it was well received and started with Hawaiian Night; it was subsequently followed by Frat Boy/ College Night in honor of Danny who had to cut his freshman year short at the University of Kentucky; then Col-orado night, in honor or their cancelled Spring Break trip; and proceeded with The Hunger Games, Disney Night and Country Night themes. Although they couldn’t take the trips, they certainly created the memories! A little more than a decade later, Joe saved the Brooklyn Dodgers’ 1952 season with his clutch relief pitching, was Rookie of the Year and became the first black pitcher to win a World Series game. Martha Jo Black, the daughter that Joe fought for custody of as a single parent and now a Chicago resident, was drawn to tell the world her father’s story of overcoming obstacles and his successes. She teamed up with sports writer Chuck Schoffner to help bring Joe’s story to life. “My dad was much more than a baseball player,” says Martha Jo. “His major-league career lasted only six years, but what he did after leaving the game went far beyond anything he accomplished on the pitcher’s mound.” Martha Jo and Chuck follow Joe’s life from growing up poor, his baseball glory days, and through corporate America where he be-came the first black vice president of a major transportation com-pany with the Greyhound Corporation. Through it all, we learn of a father’s devotion to the daughter he loved. Joe Black: More Than a Dodger, published through Chicago Review Press, can be found currently through Amazon and Barnes and Noble bookstores. I know first-hand how dev-astating that news can be and how helpless you can feel. When 12-year-old Wes Selby’s grandmother, Lee Lee, was diagnosed this last summer with stage 4 Pancreatic Cancer, this Naperville boy wrapped his feelings around wanting to help and wanting to honor her. Combining his creative design talents with his love for sneakers, Wes spent his Christmas break designing a shoe he named the Moonflag12 to celebrate his grandmother. “She al-ways told us she loved us ‘to the Moon and Back’,” says Wes. “So, I put a photo of man on the moon on the in-side tongue and made the shoes red, white and blue like the American Flag.” Wes’s idea was to sell the shoes and have all the pro-ceeds go to Pancreatic Cancer Research in hopes of finding an early detection test. He diligently searched and found a place in Italy that would have master crafts-men custom make his shoes. He was told he needed to sell seven pairs for the shoes to go into production. “I truly didn’t think this would go anywhere,” says Kiersten, Wes’s mother. “When Wes got 4 sales on his own, he asked me to post them on my Facebook page, and he sold a total of 10 pairs, so the shoes went into production!” Knowing the shoes can be expensive, Wes wanted to make items everyone could wear or use that would help the cause and be reasonably priced. He created his brand, W3S, a take on his name but with the number 3 instead of an E as a totem of good luck, and designed a line of streetwear including hats, shirts, stickers, cinch saks, etc. “It shows that kids can make a difference,” says Wes. “I like that even at my age (12), I can help not only Lee Lee, but so many other people who have been diagnosed with PanCan.” To shop the W3S brand or for the Moonflag 12 sneakers, visit w3s.shop or follow Wes on Facebook at www.facebook.com/W3Sofficial/ . In May we recognize and honor our Mother’s and enjoy all that the spring season brings with brunches and new restaurants. Whether you are in Geneva or Naperville, Buttermilk Cafe is serving up fresh Mi-mosas with breakfast and dishes ranging from the fluffiest Cinnamon Roll Pancakes, savory omelets and healthy Quinoa Bowl to traditional sandwiches. Buttermilk Café’s coffee bar program showcases classic espresso inspired beverages hot or cold; in addition, they offer a variety of unique, traditional and craft alcoholic bever-ages. The Hen House in Wheaton is a breakfast lunch restaurant focusing on a more decadent but healthy alternative to your average breakfast lunch restaurants offer-ing unique Mimosas with variations including a signature apple cider mimosa, as well as Bloody Mary’s. Beverages are also available for pickup because as they say, ‘brunch without bubbly is just a sad breakfast’. Or perhaps, do a little something different this Mother’s Day and take mom to Mill-hurst Charhouse in Oakbrook Terrace for an immersive mystery experience full of twists and turns on May 16th from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. A murder will occur, and your sleuthing skills will be put to the test as you work to determine whodunnit. Work together to examine clues and mingle with suspects to deduce the culprit as you dine on a killer three-course meal. Try something new this month at Makon Authentic Central Asian Cuisine in Downers Grove newly open and serving Uzbek and Central Asian traditions such as soups, noodles, hot snacks, dishes, and kebabs. Call (630) 963-9130 for Curbside Pickup or Free Delivery THE ART OF AFTERNOON TEA - STORY FEATURED IN MAY 2019 Sharing a cup of tea with our Grandmother is still a favorite occasion. When I was little it was always orange pekoe. Grandma would carry over her gold sugar bowl and very carefully using the tiny spoon I would add two cubes. Sometimes it was a bowl with colored sugar, but always a dainty tea cup and saucer. We would share stories about the day and as we got older, we would share our aspirations. Our love of tea grew as our relationship with our Grandmother grew. Hosts Pam and Paul’s love of tea starts right in their backyard. After years of col-lecting pine cones around their property it seemed a perfect fit to name their abode Pinecone Cottage. Being an avid gardener, Pam grew herbs, flowers and vege-tables and shared them among neighbors and friends. She used the abundance of fresh clippings and fruits to make sauces, pastries, curds and preserves. In 2002 Pam and Paul opened The Pinecone Cottage in downtown Downers Grove to share their passion with others. Inspired by her travels and the many afternoon tea she has enjoyed, she created a perfect afternoon at this unique tea house. Pinecone Cottage offers a vast loose tea selection including a house blend, Ti-sanes, Rooibos, decaffeinated teas, white, green and green flavored, oolong, black and black flavored. Tea is expertly paired with menu items. Menu items such as scones, sandwiches and salads are based on a monthly theme. We are so excited about the May menu theme “Alice in Wonderland”! The menu includes both savories and sweets and uses seasonally available ingredients–many of which are still grown in the original pinecone gardens. Enjoy the most delightful pinescones served with a dollop of Devon crème. The handmade preserves and curds are made using the traditional methods of the Elizabethan era. The chicken salad is refreshing and the quaint tea sandwiches are quite flavorful. The four course afternoon tea is served by reservations only. Pinecone cottage also offers cooking classes and has a monthly catering menu. Check their website for monthly offerings. This spring sip a cup of tea with your grandma or a girlfriend in the lovely Pinecone Cottage. Enjoy a tidbit and don’t be late to your very important date!
