COVER STORYDanuta and Emma Loane ST. CHARLES/DUNDEE–For Danuta, working with her hands has always been second nature. After 15 years of shaping clay into beautiful, functional pieces, her journey began at a holiday show at Fine Line in St. Charles. What started as a creative outlet turned into a thriving small business when people began asking to buy her pottery. That led to her Etsy shop, local art shows, and even-tually—Pottery Meets Vintage, a charming booth she now shares with her daughter, Emma at trend +relic, a multi-vendor marketplace in St. Charles. Danuta’s roots in the arts run deep. From art restoration work with the Florence Art Conservation in the '90s to mural painting and teaching at a Montessori school, she’s always followed her creative instincts. Her experience working in her family’s woodworking busi-ness with her dad also gave her the confidence to start something of her own. Emma joined the studio last summer after being diagnosed with thy-roid cancer, requiring her to step back from her hairstyling career. Creating with clay quickly became therapeutic as she pursued her associates degree. She is now a full-blown ceramic artist, known for her whimsical animal caves and painterly pieces. Together, they make pottery magic in their Dun-dee home studio. You can find them in person at Trend and Relic, 4th Fridays at The Dole, or monthly at the Crystal Lake Farmers Market. Did you receive formal training for ceramic design? I took a pottery class with a friend at the Fineline Art Center in St. Charles, I loved the entire process. Who knew that it would lead to this? It's amazing to think how long ago I took my first class (I think it was in 2010), and now I have my own studio at home! What are your favorite ceramic items to create? I love it all! I enjoy the wheel as much as hand-building. I make functional pottery and love it when people use what I make. I sgraffito carve into the clay and I really would say that is my favorite part of what I do. What is trending in ceramics arts for Spring/Summer 2025? Handmade plates/bowls that are not so perfect...a little "wonky". That being said, we both make unique pottery that is decorated in some way not just glazed. We also have glazed pottery without any of our special touches but the glaze is not plain. More colorful or interesting with patterns or drips, something you can't buy just any-where, we both believe if someone is going to buy something hand-made by either of us it should be unique and original. COVER STORY12 • WESTERN SUBURBS • MAY 2025 • Glancer Magazine What specialty tools or equipment are necessary to create/design ceramic arts? The tools needed are first a pottery wheel, slab roller and kiln. I have small hand tools for trimming and a few molds but that's about it. Some artists share their emotions through their works, does any of your work represent certain phases of life, highs, lows, etc...? My work represents my love of nature and I try to incorporate flowers, butterflies and animals in my pottery in some way. Either by carving or sculpting images into the pottery pieces. How has modern technology impacted your artwork? Modern technology such as social media has been great for sharing and connecting with other artists, also opens many doors to be seen. -Kristen Kucharski Photos by Mike Catuara

Glancer Magazine • MAY 2025 • WESTERN SUBURBS • 15COVER STORYKelly and Heidi Ash WARRENVILLE/NAPERVILLE–What started as trying to heal the deep emotion of birth trauma turned into becoming a small business owner and living out moth-erhood the way Kelly always dreamed. Married to her high school sweetheart, Colin, for the past eight years, their daugh-ter, Heidi, made her grand entrance 6 weeks early and spent over two weeks in the NICU. Not being able to hold or even see her for the first 26 hours was incredibly tough—and leaving the hospital without her was absolutely heartbreaking. To feel close, the couple slept with one of Heidi’s blankets so it would carry their scent for when she fi-nally came home. That connection meant everything. Motherhood has been a wild, beautiful ride for Kelly, and most will attest to easily losing yourself in the process. Starting Heidi & Ade Handmade became her way of reclaiming a little “me” time and channeling all that love and healing into something creative and per-sonal. Each year on her daughter’s birthday, the family gives back, by donating quilted loveys to the Edward Hospital NICU in hopes of comforting other families on similar journeys. Kelly specializes in vintage quilts repurposed to be your little’s new favorite lovey. She also upcycles vintage clothing. All handmade with love during Heidi’s naptime! By day, Kelly is an orthodontic clini-cian in downtown Hinsdale. On week-ends, you’ll find her at art fairs and Batavia Artisan Collective markets. As it turns out, “what if” turned into “look what I did,” for this local artisan mom! Did you receive formal training for quilting design? While I source and use vintage and antique quilts for all my work, quilting from scratch is a whole other side of things! I have self-taught myself how to quilt, repair and finish quilt tops from trusty YouTube & Pinterest! I have the highest respect for those who are seasoned quilters start-to-fin-ish, it is not for the light-hearted. What inspired the name of your business? Heidi Adrenne is the name of our daughter. My maternal grandmother, Heidi’s great grandmother, was Adrenne (pronounced Aye-Dreen). Adrenne was a professional seamstress and passed away of breast cancer when my mom was only 21. I never had the opportunity to have her in my life but have always felt a strong connection to her more than I can explain. When we knew we were having a girl, nam-ing her after Adrenne was a given and now, it feels completely right. Heidi & Ade as a name let me honor not only my daughter, but the combination of two different generations sharing a greater connec-tion. (continued)
COVER STORY16 • WESTERN SUBURBS • MAY 2025 • Glancer Magazine What are your favorite items to create? My favorite item I make will always be the baby loveys and blan-kets. Because I use antique quilts, and most have been squirreled away in someone’s linen closet or cedar chest for years, knowing these quilts are getting a second life to a new generation of babies is the whole reason I love creating heirloom quality pieces. What is trending in the fashion arts design world for Spring/Summer 2025? I have seen so many companies this season showcasing quilt patch clothing! Free People and Abercrombie & Fitch have been at this for a while now. What specialty tools or equipment are necessary to create/design quilting arts? A rotary cutter is my ride or die (and now, so have band-aids). Our family owned a dry cleaners in downtown Naperville for 50+ years. Once it was time to close the doors, I ended up with the basic, Brother sewing machine that was used for alterations. She’s sim-ple, yet mighty and I think it’s so special that I’ve been able to really take off with H&A using it! Though it’s not the machine my grandma Adrenne used when she was the seamstress at the dry-cleaner, it’s home was on the same table she would work & sew on. Some artists share their emotions through their works, does any of your work represent certain phases of life, highs, lows, etc...? When I start to gear up for our annual NICU donations, it’s hard to not feel a lot of the same emotions. Because I bring a lovey for each current family, I’ll call the NICU nurses station for an updated number of patients. Just having this number as a saved contact can feel heavy. Once I do start to lock in on making our donation loveys, I focus on intentionally slowing down and give my whole heart into knowing we get to be a part of a family’s story. How has modern technology impacted your quilting? I think that by giving a new life to an otherwise neglected textile has really helped to show others truly what “heirloom” can be. Not everything needs to be the latest and greatest, but something that was meant to be used, loved and worn can be just that. Slowing down with consuming influenced products and reliving in the com-fort of generations-past. -Kristen Kucharski, Photos by Ruta Drulia Photography

The Bliss Bell Tent, a vision realized by founder and Sugar Grove resident, Holly Johnson, stood as a sanctuary—a 20-foot haven where the boundaries between na-ture and nurture blurred. We felt a million miles away from the western suburbs of Chi-cago as we approached a beautiful circle tent. Adjacent to the tent, the Yognasium awaited—a bespoke outdoor aerial yoga studio amidst the trees. Here, suspended in silks, we experi-enced a liberating practice that harmonized movement with the natural world. The gentle sway of the hammock, the rustle of leaves, and the distant calls of wildlife created a symphony of serenity. Our Sister Circle continued inside the tent as we sat upon yoga mats and bolsters. The earthy aroma of essential oils weaved through the air, grounding us in the present. Barefoot, we en-gaged in an earthing practice, feeling the pulse of the earth be-neath us. We unknowingly reached for an oracle card and shared our personal thoughts and insights that resonated deeply within us, setting the tone for introspection. little black bookA New Adventure Every Month!featuring

Each activity, from moving our bodies in the Yoga-nasium to quietly reflecting and setting intentions, fostered a sense of unity and purpose. Throughout the experience, the presence of Holly was a guiding light. Her deep connection to holistic practices and authentic communication enriched our journey, offering insights that transcended tra-ditional yoga. Departing from Aviana Yoga, we carried with us more than memories—we bore a renewed sense of self, a deeper connection to nature, and the comforting embrace of a newfound sisterhood. NAPERVILLE HISTORY New Exhibit at Naper Settlement NAPERVILLE–Naper Settlement’s new exhibit, “Selling Kroehler,” explores Kroehler Manufacturing Company, the largest upholstered furniture maker in the United States by the mid-20th century. Kroehler Manufacturing Company was headquartered in Naperville from 1893 until 1978. In an effort to appeal to women, Kroehler developed sophisticated marketing strategies that sought to educate consumers around good taste. “Sell-ing Kroehler” dives into the company's marketing strategies to the rapidly changing consumer culture of the 20th century. The exhibit explores the innovative methods and strategies that Kroehler used to aid and educate retailers about how to sell to consumers. springtime hvacHOME SERVICES Top 5 Reasons to Get an A/C Tune-Up As temperatures rise, your A/C works hard to keep your home cool. Regular tune-ups boost efficiency, extend lifespan, and pre-vent costly breakdowns. Here are the top five reasons why an A/C tune-up is essen-tial. Enhanced Efficiency: Over time, dust, dirt, and debris accumulate in your A/C system, forcing it to work harder to cool your home. A professional tune-up includes cleaning and inspecting key compo-nents, ensuring your unit runs at peak efficiency, reducing energy consumption and lowering utility bills. Extended Lifespan: Proper maintenance helps prevent premature wear and tear on components, extending the lifespan of your A/C system. Improved Comfort: A well-tuned air conditioner delivers consistent cooling performance, ensuring optimal comfort levels in your home. Preventative Maintenance: Tune-ups allow HVAC technicians to identify and ad-dress minor issues before they escalate into major problems, preventing costly re-pairs down the line. Better Air Quality: Clean filters and coils, as well as properly calibrated components, contribute to better indoor air quality by re-moving dust, allergens, and pollutants from the air circulated by your A/C system. Scheduling an A/C tune-up before summer arrives is a smart decision that saves money, enhances comfort, and prolongs your system’s life. Don’t wait until your A/C breaks down—book your tune-up with McNally HVAC today and enjoy a cool, worry-free summer! Contact McNally’s Heating and Cooling to schedule your A/C Tune-Up today!
