Meet Jenn Carr of St. Charles/Geneva ST. CHARLES/GENEVA–Throughout Jenn’s life, she has strived to embody Ma-hatma Gandhi's famous words, Be the change you wish to see in the world. She understands the importance of taking action to bring about positive change which is why in March 2023 she assumed the role as ambassador and co-host of The Mom Walk Collective in Geneva with another mother, Shelby Reints. Founded initially by Jamie Easton who was struggling with balancing the new changes of motherhood, marriage, work, and friendships, The organization was formed to cultivate in-person and online social gatherings for mothers to find their village and raise the next generation. “What I love most about it is the sense of community it provides for mothers and their children,” Jenn says. “I have been able to build friendships not only for myself but also for my daughter, Nova (7 months). It's a wonderful feeling to connect with other mothers who understand the joys and challenges of motherhood and to have a safe space where we can share advice, commiserate, and support each other. It's a wonderful feeling to be a part of something that is helping mothers feel less alone in their journey.” The group is connecting families to local businesses and contributing to the sus-tainability of what makes their community unique, while also serving as an enriching experience of friendship and support. “When I moved to St. Charles, I wanted to get involved and make an impact in the community, but I was uncertain about how and where to begin. It wasn’t until I be-came a mother and recognized my own personal need for local mom friends that I discovered The Mom Walk Collective and I am honored to be a part of something that is helping mothers,” Jenn adds. As a 21 year resident of Glen Ellyn, Patty’s spare time is filled with pick-leball, golf, travel, and meeting up with friends and family, but sticking to Dolly Parton’s words, find out who you are and do it on purpose, Patty took over all aspects of running Glen Ellyn Mom’s Village when it’s founder Alicia Donovan moved back home to Minnesota in May of 2020 to con-tinue her Mastermom Talk Series. Glen Ellyn Mom’s Village is a storytelling platform with created content that informs, educates, inspires and connects businesses to the greater community. It is a passion project that has organically become a business of its own. In January of 2023, it became an LLC establishing partnerships with Stroll GE Magazine and Innovation Dupage to highlight individuals and businesses. As a Content Creator, Patty is also able to work with corporations and or-ganizations to create UGC content and offer sponsored posts. “One of my favorite things that I do is connect, collaborate and cheer for people and businesses in our Chicagoland area,” she says. “I love meet-ing people, creating community and supporting small businesses. I love learning about their story and sharing it with our followers.” Glen Ellyn Moms Village is a very engaged, loyal group that thrives on supporting each other. -Kristen Kucharski, Photos by Mike Catuata Unless Otherwise Submitted www.instagram.com/glenellynmomsvillage# https://linktr.ee/glenellynmomsvillage

Kayla’s Hope ST. CHARLES–Our thoughts and emotions are often just that – ours. Sharing those feelings when you are down is intimidating as you don’t al-ways have an explanation for sadness or depression. In a world that seems to be screaming dissension, ugli-ness and tragedy, sources for kindness, love and under-standing get lost, especially with those navigating mental illness. Kayla’s Hope Foundation out of St. Charles is working to change that by offering assistance to those who struggle and hope to those who need it most. The foundation was established in 2018 by the Lehmann family in loving memory of their daughter and sister, Kayla Brooke Lehmann, when she lost her battle with severe depression. “Kayla loved to create and listen to music and read more books than most people do in a lifetime,” says Ruthie Lehmann, Kayla’s mother and Founder of Kayla’s Hope. “She felt isolated in her depression even though she was sur-rounded with loving friends and family. She wanted more than anything to be happy.” Their mission is to help remove the stigma of mental illness and change the way we see and care for those suffering. The foundation works on programs to pro-vide more care, kindness, and hope…especially for youth, as well as contributes financial support to mental health organizations and grants scholarships to high school seniors with a passion for music, literature, or psychology. “We want people to know it is okay to not be okay,” says Ruthie, “and it’s so important to seek help and feel comfortable doing so.” Since its inception, Kayla’s Hope Foundation has raised nearly $200,000 to help fund and achieve their goals. It is important for them to also create opportunities to spread encouragement and kindness to the com-munity. One of the ways they have achieved this is the de-velopment of Kayla’s Kind-ness Rock Garden located in St. Charles in the Fox Mill Subdivision. The rocks are painted by the community and at events with uplifting messages, beautiful art and lots of hope. Take a rock if you need a reason to smile or add a rock or two if you want to spread kindness. Recently, the foundation had its biggest annual fund-raising event - Kayla’s Hope Week. It runs the first week of April with a kick-off of a Masters Golf raffle, si-lent auction, a free family-friendly rock painting event and culminates with the Hope Blooms Celebration event night. There are many opportunities for the community to get involved no matter what age. I love them both dearly so it doesn't take much for me to reward myself and completely justify my actions with a giant bag of each - afterall, it's Mother's Day! Combining my love for adventure with my love for chocolate was a total win-win with Kilwin's Kitchen Experience. This might be Elmhurt's best kept secret as one cannot discover them on Kil-win's website; however, with a quick call to local store manager, Megan Gavin, you can schedule a group of maximum 8 to play Chocolatier for an hour. Better yet, this activity works for anyone 5 years old and up and can be tailored to all abilities. Each experience is customizable. Megan's enthusiasm and tal-ents exude as she leads the class so patiently and skillfully, while maintaining lightness and laughter. We each started with a tray boasting one giant handmade marsh-mallow, one pretzel rod, one oreo cookie, one graham cracker square, a decorative sugar candy, sprinkles, and a stick. Megan led us through the basic steps to make each item. MOM’S little black book

Glancer Magazine • MAY 2023 • WESTERN SUBURBS • 21Who knew a hammer and a giant 10 lb. block of chocolate were the beginning steps of each de-licious piece!?! Although some moms might enjoy a nice relaxing massage to reduce their stress, I personally found smashing a massive chocolate bar equally as satisfying for the same end result! We next added our chunks to the melter and learned the fine art of dipping items. Some of us dipped with diligence and perfection, while others of us (me!) giggled and dipped like a young child with no regard to exterior appearances. We learned how to secure the stick in the marsh-mallow and lay the sugar candy with grace. We sprinkled in orderly fashion and designed with ripples and swirls. The experience was com-pletely fulfilling to watch a simple food item de-velop into a divine edible crafted creation. The highlight of the session was learning how easy Nonpareil Candies are to make - even I couldn't mess them up! Shop GalleryTWO LOCAL BOUTIQUES FEATURING LIVERPOOL THIS SPRING WHEATON & ST. CHARLES–Jill Card opened Jeans and a Cute Top after years of working in retail and corporate sales jobs, wearing boring suits, un-comfortable panty hose, and predictable white dress shirts. The name was in-spired by her first date with her husband when she asked, “What should I wear?” and her husband replied: “Jeans and a cute top.” When Jill was getting ready for that first date, she didn’t have a great pair of jeans or a cute top in her closet and had to borrow an outfit from her sister, a flight attendant with a much more fun wardrobe. As she got older, Jill couldn’t find any great jeans for women in their 30s and 40s. Stores catered to teenagers or grandmas. The unflattering ‘Mom’ jeans filled in that age gap. Now, in Jill’s closet, you’ll find about 40 pairs of jeans. She has 8-10 pairs in regular rotation. Her go-to, favorite pair is the Gia from Liverpool—the denim is super soft and keeps its shape. Jeans & A Cute Top is the solution for women who don’t want to look ridiculous trying to dress like their daughters but also refuse to settle for shapeless lounge wear. Jill hand selects every item in the store, going to trade shows looking for style over trend, and finding affordable, beautiful clothes that work for all women, not just size 0 models. You will find Jill working the floor of one of her shops every day—she is committed to changing the world for women one great fitting pair of jeans at a time. www.jeansandacutetop.com Expires 5-30-2328 • WESTERN SUBURBS • MAY 2023 • Glancer Magazine

HOME DESIGN UNIQUE STYLE EXPERIENCE GENEVA –The Cottage Geneva is a shop that makes you feel like you’re home. This small shop is warm and cozy with a beautiful blend of new and vintage home décor. With a cottage farm-house style, the shop offers a welcoming experience for customers to find that special item that elevates their own home. Owner, Jonna Kelleher, a former emergency room nurse, unfortunately lost both her parents in her teens, leaving her moving from home to home at a young age. Losing the comfort of home so young gave her the determination to offer that cozy comfort of home to others. It was last year while traveling in Traverse City, Michigan that her husband, Sean, encouraged her to go after her dream of owning her own shop. A few months later, The Cottage opened in The Berry House in downtown Geneva. The Cottage has made many new relationships with its customers who share the same passion of curating a cozy home environment. Jonna encourages customers to curate a style that they’re passionate about and she loves to inspire others that they don’t need design experience to make their home beautiful. The Cottage carries a wide variety of handcrafted furniture by her husband, Sean, as well as greenery, planters, barware, kitchen essentials and antiques. Everything in the shop is hand-selected by Jonna and curated with her heart. Come stop by The Cottage where you’ll find Jonna decorating the store with either her vintage finds or new arrivals to inspire you to love where you live even more, home. The Cottage Geneva 227 S. “One of the great joys of our lives has been working with fam-ilies to create timeless and classic homes that are a true re-flection of themselves,” Renee says. “It occurred to us along the way that we wanted to welcome friends, family and clients into a place that felt like one of our own homes, a cu-rated experience that would bring our portfolio to life. So that’s how the idea of The Parlour at Park & Oak was born.” Historically, the parlour is the room in a home dedicated to entertainment and conversation. To stay true to their interior design roots, they felt this was an obvious choice name for their new space. Their showroom is broken up into different areas of the home, each specifically tailored to exhibit the design concepts they feel most passionate about. Boasting a unique menu of flavorful cocktails, Renee loves them all but her go-to is their speciality drink with pear, cham-pagne and elderflower that has a light crisp flavor perfect for the summer. Christina and Renee are known in the community for creating homes that are visually stunning, yet functional and comfort-able. Their work, rooted in the art of timeless style, is driven by the belief that design can be used to create feelings of comfort and happiness. It combines the best of their individ-ual aesthetics for a unique look and this is easily translated to The Parlour! parkandoakparlour.com www.parkandoakparlour.com Introduce Us to a Business or Organization that’s New In Town editorial@glancermagazine.comNEW IN TOWNGlancer Magazine • MAY 2023 • WESTERN SUBURBS • 43

CATHERINE SANZERI IS AN AWARD WINNING HOME DESIGNER WITH A 5,000 SQ FT SHOWROOM LOCATED IN KANE COUNTY BATAVIA–With a background in construction and interior design, owner Catherine Sanzeri saw a need for affordable quality cabinetry and kitchen design, so she opened West DuPage Cabinets and Granite in 1997, and has been leading the market as a custom home builder since. Her talented team continues to fill a niche in the west suburban home design marketplace by providing a full range of products to fit every budget while providing lifestyle-focused designs with top industry de-signers. As a proud member of the NKBA and KCMA, this women-owned establishment guarantees absolute satisfaction. “I just love what I do, so every day is a dream for me,” Catherine says. THE DESIGN PROCESS The talented design team will visit your home for a consultation, take measurements and look at the lifestyle components of the home and family; then create a custom masterpiece, incorporating the latest pro-ducts that meet the specific needs of each homeowner. The entire process is coordinated by West DuPage Cabinets & Granite providing total satisfaction and the end result is a stress-free process from design to build, including designer privilege discounts on appli-ances and fixtures. INDUSTRY TRENDS Catherine noted that the industry is always changing with future trends leaning towards larger islands, coffee bars and entertainment spaces, including a wine refrigerator in the kitchen and more features to accom-modate larger groups. She also says that natural woods and stains are trending for 2023. LEADING THE WAY One of Catherine’s most cherished projects was when her team de-signed and built a first floor master suite for a client whose husband had MS and could no longer walk up the stairs. “The improved quality of both of their lives was a gift to see!” shared Catherine. Stories like this are why the company has received many awards and accolades through the years including Best of the Best in Kitchen and Bath Remodeling 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021, in addition to Glancer Magazine’s ‘Best of the Best’ Kitchen Designer for Kane County in 2021. Meet Brenda Baird Watterson, Local Mom, CEO & Philanthropist GLEN ELLYN–While originally born in Toronto, Canada, Brenda was raised primarily in Wheaton. She began her career in the Investment Banking in-dustry, catapulting to Vice President of the firm; however after the birth of her two sons, she realized the importance of staying home for her family. Along the way, her marriage ended and she joined her family printing company, Truly Engaging, which she now holds the title of CEO. “One of the most inspiring things for me as CEO, is to see some of the women we have hired out of very difficult situations re-invent themselves,” Brenda says. “They come in every day and work as a team and the satisfaction and pride they take in themselves is visible. We hire many part time high schoolers who eventually join our team after graduation. Additionally, we have developed creative work scenarios for women re-entering the workforce and need flexibility; as well as immigrants who have come to be part of our team through various relief organ-izations. Many have been part of our company for over 15 years and continue to be integral to the trajectory of our growth.” Brenda works diligently to live by the words from her mother, “We are Blessed to be a Blessing”. Now remarried to Brian Watterson, her family has grown from three to eight, and although bal-ancing work and home life is challeng-ing, they all work hard to appreciate each other and celebrate successes to-gether. “Communicating with each other and our adult children whether through group texts or coveted phone calls re-minds us that our blended family is still one of our richest bless-ings.” Loyal, generous, and tenacious, Brenda’s passions run deep in her faith. She continuously gives back to her staff and the community with participation in WBENC, Pinnacle Global Net-work, Outreach Community Center, Hope Speaks, and The Ross K. MacNeill Foundation.. She has appeared on WGN and WLS as a travel expert, discussing fun and interesting things to do in Chicago and beyond. When asked to write a book about her hometown, she jumped at the chance. “I’ve been writing about Chicago for years,” says Wendy. “It’s a real treat to have a tangible book to share with others that includes my favorite places in the city.” While it is easy to create a day of visiting the Art Institute of Chicago, Navy Pier’s Centennial Wheel and Millennium Park, Perfect Day Chicago: Grab-and-Go Itineraries for Everyone also highlights the many hidden treasures to be found throughout Chicago’s neighbor-hoods, like Oz Park, the Chicago Cultural Center’s Tiffany dome, or the Violet Hour Speakeasy. Grab an itinerary to build a day of sight-seeing or string them together for a week away in the Windy City. “I really had a boots on the ground approach and visited businesses and locales in person,” says Wendy. “All of the photographs in the book are mine or are sourced by me, and I did my best to learn as much as possible before writing the book.” Perfect Day Chicago is sold everywhere books are sold, including fun places like the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago. TRENDY TRAVELERTrendY Autism- and Sensory-Friendly Vacations Made Possible Year-Round at The Beach April was World Autism Month, and Visit Myrtle Beach and the communities along the 60 miles of coastline have been com-mitted to creating an autism- and sensory-friendly destination throughout the year since 2016 so we wanted to share it as thi smonth’s Trendy Traveler feature to keep Autism awareness in the spotlight. As a recognized autism-friendly destination, Myrtle Beach con-tinues its increasing efforts to provide a safe, accessible, and wel-coming destination for all, including a sensory-friendly pledge and numerous initiatives to promote and foster inclusivity throughout the region. “We believe that everyone belongs at The Beach, and our top priority at Myrtle Beach is to provide an inclusive destination for visitors of all abilities," said Karen Riordan, President and CEO of Visit Myrtle Beach. "Families with children diagnosed with autism often feel vacations are out of their reach — and we want to change that. At Visit Myrtle Beach, we believe in the re-storative and life-altering power of travel and continue to further our efforts to provide greater support and access to memorable vacation experiences for all."Myrtle Beach: A Sensory-Friendly Destination for AllTraveler54 • WESTERN SUBURBS • MAY 2023 • Glancer Magazine Photo by www.travelscbeaches.com/myrtle-beach

TRENDY TRAVELERHighlights of sensory-friendly services and programs available throughout the Grand Strand include: In conjunction with the Champion Autism Network (CAN) and TravelAbility, Visit Myrtle Beach launched The Beach is for everyBODY: Sensory-Friendly Pledge in 2022. To date, more than 150 businesses along the Grand Strand have pledged their support or re-ceived CAN certification. Partici-pating organizations are committed to welcoming guests with autism and other neurodiverse disabilities through tangible and meaningful actions designed to support residents and visitors. Myrtle Beach International Airport has launched its participation in the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Pro-gram. The program provides a discreet way for travelers with a hidden disability, including autism, to self-identify, alerting air-port personnel that they may require additional assistance or patience throughout their travel journey. Individuals wishing to utilize the program can request a sunflower lanyard at one of the two information booths in the terminal (pre-security at bag-gage claim and post-security near Nacho Hippo and Gate A2). The airport also offers a "Quiet Room" in the baggage claim area to give families a space to decompress before or after a flight. The Autism Travel Card offered by CAN (formerly the CAN Card) is a simple way for guests to identify their family as one that includes someone with autism, without needing to say a word. Participating restaurants, hotels and venues have been trained in the needs of individuals with autism and their families and to provide a special or expedited service. Autism Travel Cards are available online at AutismTravel.Club for a $7 mem-bership fee and offer several benefits including services and discounts with participating businesses. Participating hotels, including the 15 properties of Vacation Myrtle Beach and many others, help create a safe and sen-sory-friendly experience for children with Autism and their fam-ilies, including room placements, removing potentially dangerous or trigger items from rooms, coordinating unique ex-periences and more. Wait staff at participating restaurants are trained to seat guests in a quiet space, expedite meals and check outs as needed, and handle potential sensory-overload situations with under-standing and compassion. Myrtle Beach attractions offer services such as trained staff, special programming and discounts to families that present the Autism Travel Card. Examples of the available experiences include SkyWheel Myrtle Beach where fam-ilies receive expedited attraction access along with discounted tickets and Rip-ley's Aquarium of Myrtle Beach where noise-cancelling headphones and special pricing are available. During the month of April, the team at CAN has put together a month-long campaign called, "You're Invited!" The campaign includes events and promotions at partner businesses, including sensory-friendly attraction and movie days, special SkyWheel illu-minations, and community gath-erings, such as beach sweeps in the town of Surfside. Through Project Lifesaver, Myrtle Beach area police and tourism professionals are trained to administer a GPS tracking band program for children who are prone to wandering off or are at risk of be-coming lost. Those wearing the band, whether on the wrist or ankle, can be quickly located by search teams and returned to families/caregivers. This summer, Visit Myrtle Beach will be launching a new chil-dren's book, titled Splish, Splash, Squawk! Finding Joy in a Sensory-Friendly Vacation. In partnership with author and illus-trator, Lynda Farrington Wilson, the book will help to encourage families with children on the autism spectrum to vacation to-gether through a fictional story that helps readers discover the joy and wonder in a family vacation, despite the overlooked challenges of acclimating to new environment, and experi-ences. That certainly is a winning combination we look for in many facets of life. Over the years, gluten-free foods have been hit-or-miss. For some, gluten-free foods are simply a dietary trend. For others with health-related issues (ie: gluten intolerance and Celiac Disease), it’s a necessary lifestyle choice one must adopt. With a rise in food sensitivities and food restrictions, it can be chal-lenging to navigate simple joys … like eating with friends, class-mates and loved ones. While food is a nourishing necessity of life, it’s a catalyst for connectivity too - it brings us together. Yes, we find joy in the tastes and smells of food - but, also our associations … namely the company we share. Introducing: Brown Butter Cafe & Bakery of St. Charles. This gluten-free, nut-free and soy-free cafe & bak-ery opened its doors in November of 2022. They specialize in delicious, allergy-friendly donuts that are baked fresh daily - including some vegan options. Something for everyone! And its breakfast and lunch menu is served all day. Pop-ular must-tries are its Original Salted Brown Butter Donut, Cinnamon Roll Cake, Cheddar Ja-lapeno Bread and Build-Your-Own Breakfast Cas-serole(s). Its bread is sourced from Breadsmith in St. Charles and its beans are sourced from Fresh Ground in Geneva. We are feeling very optimistic that this will be one of your new favor-ite spots! CHARLES–Having fun is most important when introducing your children to the game of golf. Let’s take a tip from the master of family entertainment – DisneyTM, which continually stresses the need to view the world through the eyes of a child. By playing from the same tees and using clubs that will travel the same distance as your child’s stroke, you will get to spend quality time during the round and create a realistic goal for your child of hitting shots further than you. I highly recommend practicing on a putting green or short game practice area that provide a great op-portunity to teach proper posture, grip and alignment. One of my favorite activities is to form teams among family members and create competitions. The ultimate benefit is improvement in putting and short game which account for nearly 70% of the shots taken in a normal round of golf. Remember the goal is to have fun, be creative, and let your child create games that are fun through their eyes while in-structive in the fundamentals through your eyes. CHARLES–There’s no better way to swing into spring or get a (Lindy) hop on summer than with the annual Barn Dance at Primrose Farm on Saturday, May 20 from 6-10pm. With music provided by Chicagoland’s own 10-piece swing band, Shout Section, and dance lessons courtesy of Geneva’s own Vargo’s Dance, this evening under the stars at the Farm promises to be a jive-hot step back in time. Just as taking a break from the rigors of seasonal chores at events such as barn dances was a popular form of entertainment for families back in the 1930s, so was the chance to show off the fruits of their harvest and talents in their kitchen with a pie-baking contest. Bring a home-made pie to compete for bragging rights. And learning swing dance can be that much more fun if one dresses in costumes of the era. Anyone wearing period appropriate clothes from the 1930s and 1940s can choose to participate in a costume competition. This “People’s Choice” contest will reward creativity and authenticity in capturing the era through vintage clothes and accessories, so get ready to raid grandma’s closet or sift through area thrift stores. Advanced tickets: $17/person – Tickets at the door: $20/person www.primrosefarm.org/tickets COMMUNITY LIVING

What Is PRP? Platelet-rich plasma is a substance that your functional medicine provider derives from your blood. Research suggests that PRP en-courages cell repair and soft tissue healing. Concentrated platelets from your own blood are injected into an injured joint or your skin through controlled injury, like microneedling, to take advantage of your body’s own natural growth factors and healing capabilities. The growth factors in plasma control inflammation and healing, thus rejuvenating your skin or decreasing pain and inflammation in your joints. Essentially, PRP helps your tissue heal itself. PRP is derived directly from your own blood. We’ll take a blood sample from you and run it through a centrifuge. This centrifuge separates your red blood cells, white blood cells, and plasma. We will then take the concentrated plasma and inject it into your joints or onto the controlled injury on your skin, whichever is appropriate for your treatment. Microneedling with PRP The amazing thing about the human body is its incredible ability to heal itself. PRP capitalizes on your body’s innate ability to thrive under the right conditions. Health optimization isn’t all supplements, nutrition, and hormone therapy; sometimes, the best way to opti-mize your health is by looking at what’s already inside you. Platelet-rich plasma, or PRP, is sometimes called “liquid gold” be-cause of its powerful restorative capabilities. If you want to optimize your wellness by harnessing your body’s natural ability to heal itself, call Peak Health Institute today to schedule your joint injection or microneedling with PRP near Naperville today!
