Glancer Magazine • MARCH 2025 • WESTERN SUBURBS • 11Kate Martin The Perfect Thing II WHEATON–In 2003, Kate’s mom Judith, opened The Perfect Thing, a business born from a need in the liq-uidation market. With her back-ground in the liquidation industry, she saw an opportunity to offer a space where people could sell unique, high-end designer and an-tique items at an accessible price. At that time, Kate was transitioning from event planning and came on to help open and run the shop temporarily. 22 years later, she is now the sole proprietor, a Generalist Accredited Appraiser of personal property with the International Society of Appraisers and dabbles in TV, guest appraising on Collec-tor's Call, and formally, What the Sell. She has previously served six years as a board member, and three years as Vice President, of the Downtown Wheaton Association. Their family-run shop remains rooted in luxury consignment, appraisals, and estate liquidations. Her dedicated staff offers honest and educated knowledge about the design and his-tory of the many eclectic styles and genres throughout their fresh inventory. What Is Hot In Vintage Home Design and Trending for Spring/Summer 2025? Clients are getting creative! Stream-lined, sleek, mid-modern inspired lines are still very hot, but blending them with old world Euro is the look! (think French Louis, rich English or Gustavian). The stark, pared down, matchy-matchy days of yore have passed us, and the new buyer is embracing a more personalized, feminine, color-forward, texturized and blended look. We are seeing a pull towards saturated color; soft, rich fabrics, and the resurgence of classic "brown" case pieces as accents. Blending metals and woods, while featur-ing bold art, geometric and antique lighting, vintage and an-tique inspired rugs is the new trend! What is the difference between vintage, shabby-look, antique, industrial chic, rustic, etc..? Oh...HUGE difference. And, in my world as an appraiser, very specific definitions: Vintage: Anything at least 20 years old, but less than 100; Antique: Anything OVER 100 years old; In-dustrial Chic: Repurposing and integrating industrial and commercial elements into design; Shabby Chic: Feminine, distressed cottage look with fluid lines, typically in softer pas-tel and neutral colors; Rustic: Worn, rugged design in-fluenced by natural elements. Glancer Magazine • MARCH 2025 • WESTERN SUBURBS • 13 What are some specific items that have sold recently that have had a lasting impression and why? Honestly, everything we sell leaves an impression. The best part of the shop is truly finding "the perfect thing" for our cus-tomers, and a new life for our client's treasured belongings. Your home is one of the most important elements of your life, and you should be surrounded by things that make you happy...that's the most impressive and important part of what we do. We have so many stories of interesting pieces/collec-tions. Do you have vintage pieces in your home? My house is a mish-mosh. I have a very eclectic collec-tion...my television console is a 19th century French provin-cial console, paired with a Mastercraft 70s brass and glass coffee table, transitional sofas and a Turkish inspired rug...next to a dining room with a reproduction Welsh cup-board, plank dining table and chippendale chairs in a buffalo check. My art is bright, bold and VERY colorful. I have ac-cents of colorful Ming style (Asian) case pieces and funky lamps. What is your personal go-to to spruce a room up quickly and inexpensively? I whole-heartedly believe a fabulous piece of art will trans-form a room. By just changing one simple piece, a space can take on a totally new look. Same goes for rugs. -Kristen Kucharski Photos by Ruta DruliaCOVER STORY

Mark Allen & Mindy Schloss of Warehouse 55 AURORA–Mark, his husband, and their two young daughters, live in Downtown Aurora in a 1909 Georgian revival a cou-ple blocks away from Warehouse 55, a unique collection of vintage finds, repur-posed furnishings, mixed with one-of-a-kind accessories. Having been a vintage reseller and de-signer for over 20 years, Mark and his business partner Mindy Schloss, gathered a group of friends from his past vintage market experiences in downtown Naperville, and opened unique boutiques in Aurora and Chicago. With the added bonus of shopping vintage online or in-person, Au-rora’s newly renovated industrial space has something for every aesthetic from MCM, rustic farmhouse, cottage chic and modern contemporary. What is hot in vintage home design for Spring/Summer 2025? Garden decor and lots of color. Although traditional style decorating is on the rise, adding vintage to your home over new, traditional fur-niture is the trend. Another big trend is mixing primitive furniture with your style, just by adding one piece can really change up the room and make it more inviting. Painted furniture is on the decline . What is trending in 2025 for overall home decor and design? Moody colors, vintage pottery, vintage glassware, and vintage art-work. What are some specific items that have sold recently that have had a lasting impression and why? Artwork, love how it has a story to people of while they are buying it Do you have vintage pieces in your home? What is the history or story be-hind the piece that intrigued your per-sonal purchase I have a lot of vintage collections in my home and one of my favorites is my vintage alabaster bird bath collection. I've been collecting them for years and some of my favorite ones are from Warehouse 55. I like to mix a variety of styles together. One of my favorite spots is my family room where I have a very modern buffet with a big fancy French gold mirror above it. Another favorite item in my home is my lighting. People that know me know my obsession for vintage chandeliers. Both of my stores are all lit up with vintage lighting from all over the world. My per-sonal favorites are in my home, with my favorite one in my guest room that came from a lovely couple in Galena. It’s an 18 century French chandelier dripping in crystals. What is your personal go-to to spruce a room up quickly and inexpensively? Accessories. I’m lucky to have a fairly large basement and I have a room with shelving where I keep different pieces that are readily ac-cessible to create seasonal change from books, to vintage glass-ware, to pottery. Pillows are always a great, easy change. -Kristen Kucharski Photos by Mike CatuaraCOVER STORYGlancer Magazine • MARCH 2025 • WESTERN SUBURBS • 15

Heather Corcoran & Karri Custardo of trend+relic ST. CHARLES–With combined backgrounds in graphic arts, pho-tography, web design; along with full-time corporate jobs at AT&T and Aldi, Karri and Heather became fast friends, collectively merging their business knowledge and creative elements to open trend+relic in 2020. Housing many specialty merchants under one roof, who create and curate unique items including handcrafted spe-cialties such as jewelry, candles, furniture, and art, the pair love to go on buying road trips, refinish furniture with Fusion Mineral Paint, and stay involved with the St. Charles Small Business Alliance. What is hot in vintage home design for Spring/Summer 2025? We have been reading that art deco is making a comeback so we are waiting to see how that takes off at the shop. Art-work is always timeless, whether it's original or reproduction in gorgeous antique frames. Vintage furniture statement pieces are always in style and we are seeing a lot of round furniture, such as barrel back chairs for example. What is trending in 2025 for over-all home decor and design? Color has made a comeback, which is exciting! We are loving the color drenching we are seeing, where the room, trim, ceilings and even furni-ture are the same color or same color family. Rich jewel tones and wood furniture in rich dark tones. What is the difference between vintage, shabby-look, antique, industrial chic, rustic, etc..? Antiques should be 100 years old or older, vintage is 20 years or older although generally should be 1999 or earlier. Shabby Chic is a more worn, lived in style that embraces the age of the furniture such as chippy paint or worn finishes. Colors are whites, creams...light, soft colors. Industrial Chic is more of a rustic charm mixed with a modern feel, especially skilled at repurposing functional furniture like office decor, for example, and turning them into living room furniture. Using metals and exposed pipes are just a couple of ways to achieve a modern, industrial feel. There are so many design and decor styles and so many of them play great together, for example Mid Century Modern and Boho, Rustic and Shabby Chic or Primitive. There are no hard fast rules in marrying these genres, if something speaks to you, go for it! There is nothing more interesting and beautiful than a well curated home filled with eclectic treasures that all have a story. (cont.) Do you have vintage pieces in your home? What is the history or story behind the piece that intrigued your per-sonal purchase? Karri - One of my favorite estate sales where I purchased many of my favorites was at the home of an interior designer who traveled extensively in Africa and Asia and her collection was enviable for sure. A kneeling man holding a tray over his head is a favorite end table, beautiful cement pillars from a fireplace surround in New Orleans, original oil painting por-traits are always a favorite of mine and my collection is grow-ing. Heather - One of my favorite finds in my home is a 17th cen-tury hope chest that a father created for his daughter before being betrothed. Even the corner brackets have heart carv-ings. Not only is it a beautiful piece, it also has an interesting history. I also have an 18th century birthing chair from Spain that is always an interesting conversation topic. The crafts-manship is incredible considering what it must have endured! What is your personal go-to to spruce a room up quickly and inexpensively? Paint! The easiest way to change the look and feel of a room is by changing the color. If I don't want to make that kind of commitment, change rugs, pillows, plants, and window treatments. -Kristen KucharskiPhotos by Mike CatuaraCOVER STORYGlancer Magazine • MARCH 2025 • WESTERN SUBURBS • 19

34 • WESTERN SUBURBS • MARCH 2025 • Glancer Magazine Holly O’Donnell Author of Fiercely Confident Holly O’Donnell is on a mission to ignite confidence and con-nection, and her latest book, Fiercely Confident, is the spark that’s lighting the way for parents and kids alike. With a back-ground in leadership training and communication development, Holly has spent years teaching adults how to build stronger connections. But one simple conversation with a mom friend changed everything—she realized the tools she shared with professionals could dramatically help parents and their chil-dren, especially during the rollercoaster years of middle school. From that revelation, Fiercely Confident was born. At its heart, the book is a framework designed to inspire reflec-tion and spark meaningful conversations between parents and kids. Holly wants readers to walk away with a renewed sense of resilience, confidence, and enthusiasm—traits that go far beyond middle school challenges. With themes of inclusion and self-discovery, the book is a resourceful and insightful guide for families navigating these formative years. Holly describes the writing process as a whirlwind of inspira-tion, with stories and truths flowing from her experiences and everyday interactions. Whether brainstorming during walks in the park or jotting down notes after moments with her daugh-ter, she found joy in seeing the book take shape. We asked Holly who her biggest supporters were during the writing pro-cess and she shared that it was her husband and sister. As far as who Holly would cast if Fiercely Confident were made into a movie, she shared that it would be Rachel McAdams as a mom, because she was amazing in “Are You There God, It’s Me Margaret.” For the child, she would cast her own daughter as herself and some of her theater friends. Looking ahead, Holly plans to expand her message with Fiercely Motivated, a sequel focused on sparking momentum and ambition in life. With her daughter co-authoring, this dy-namic duo promises even more inspiration for readers. Stay tuned—Holly isn’t slowing down! LOMBARD–The Yorktown Center is undergoing a massive transformation that will redefine its place in West Suburban Chicago. Say hello to The Square at Yorktown Center, a redevelopment plan poised to revitalize this iconic destination by introducing modern enhancements, residential spaces, and community-focused features. If you’re a local shopper, real estate investor, or nearby resident in Lombard, Downers Grove, or the surrounding areas, you’ll want to watch this space closely. This redevelopment isn’t just about what’s new at Yorktown Center—it’s about creating a vibrant lifestyle hub that blends community, convenience, and a fresh experience for all. Here’s everything you need to know about the forthcoming changes and enhancements at The Square at Yorktown Center. A New Vision for Yorktown Center Yorktown Center is stepping into the future with a reimagined space designed to reflect the modern needs of West Subur-ban Chicago. At the heart of this transformation lies The Square, a multi-phase redevelopment plan that emphasizes residential integration, walkable spaces, and an enriched shopping and leisure experience. This project marks the next evolution in our strategic master-plan and vision for Yorktown Center. Adding a vibrant mix of uses where people will want to live, shop, dine and be enter-tained ensures the viability of the shopping center and will enhance the local community for generations to come. -Jonathan Rood, EVP of Development, Pacific Retail Capital Partners The project will bring over 700 luxurious residential units to the property, making it a true live-work-play destination. Ad-jacent to this, a vibrant new park will blend urban conven-ience with natural recreation, redefining the mall experience by offering something for everyone. Key Features of The Square at Yorktown Center The redevelopment includes exciting new additions that cater to the diverse interests of the community. Here are some of the highlights you can look forward to: Luxury Residential Units Beginning in Summer 2024, a two-phase redevelopment of the 12+ acre vacant department store is scheduled to begin con-struction. The redevelopment includes Yorktown Reserve luxury multi-family buildings, a 1+ acre park area to be used as a com-munal outdoor environment, and newly energized dining and shopping destinations. Phase one of the project with an anticipated completion date of Spring 2026 includes the demolition of the former Carson’s building, construction of a multi-family residential building, the creation of a large park area that will be a communal outdoor space, as well as peripheral building modifications to the shop-ping center that will create a seamless connection to the res-idential units. The Community Open Park This park will be the crown jewel of The Square. The new park will engage shoppers and residents with unique events, pop-up markets, concerts, art activations and much more. Designed with thoughtful features, the park will include: • A children’s play area • An entertainment stage for concerts and events • A dog park for pet owners • Fitness spaces for outdoor exercise • Set amidst lush greenery and elegant pathways, the park will offer unique experiences like pop-up markets, art installations, and seasonal events. Sustainability and Long-Term Vision The redevelopment is not just about creating a better shopping center. It’s about meeting the long-term needs of the West Sub-urban community. This includes eco-friendly designs and func-tional urban planning to ensure small-town charm meets metropolitan energy. Seamless Integration Between Spaces Redesigned pathways will ensure seamless integration between the residential units, the shopping center, and the park. This walkable design fosters community engagement and conven-ience. Timeline and What to Expect The transformation of Yorktown Center is already underway, with work taking place in multiple phases: Phase One (Summer 2024 – Spring 2026): The initial phase will include demolishing the current Carson’s building, constructing luxury residential units, and creating the sprawling park area. The Summit at Yorktown: Additional residential construction in the former convenience center area aims to finish in roughly three years. By Spring 2026, visitors, residents, and shoppers can expect a complete overhaul of what they know as Yorktown Center. 46 • WESTERN SUBURBS • MARCH 2025 • Glancer Magazine MMOOMM’’SS 5D Spectrum Dining Adventure CHICAGO–I had been watching videos of the most incredible dining adventure in Las Vegas when I discovered it was also right here in Chicago; so, I grabbed some friends and headed to the cutest part of Chicago’s South Loop. With the added bonus of underground, validated parking, just steps from the restau-rant’s front door, this was the perfect mini get away! The experience started as soon as we entered - the ambience was immediately engaging as robots rolled past, serving drinks to the Japanese BBQ tables, and we were led to the private space for our dining adventure. Having never experienced “hot pot”, I was intrigued by the unique table that housed built-in burners and settings. The lights were turned down and the fusion of Asian cuisine and techno-logical innovation began. The restaurant transcended the tradi-tional dining experience by engaging all five of our senses, creating an immersive environment that had us immediately par-taking in a multi-dimensional culinary adventure. The introduction of HD 360-degree projections, thematic sound-scapes, and interactive light displays, transformed our meal into a spectacular event. This approach not only enhanced the visual appeal but also evoked an emotional connection as the colors took over our tabletop and the walls surrounding us.little black bookA New Adventure Every Month!featuring

It was an unlimited affair of dipping in a variety of fla-vored broths and custom sauces throughout the hot pot phenomenon. Having each of us select dif-ferent broths made the experience even more en-gaging as the communal dining enhanced the evening. The 5D spectrum room dynamically shifted with each course served; visuals change alongside the menu, while ambient sounds and music weaved narratives that complemented the dining explora-tion.
