Meet Lauren Collander of Naperville Lauren's upbringing in Nap-erville has instilled in her a deep sense of pride and at-tachment to her hometown. Right out of college, she em-barked on a remarkable jour-ney, showcasing her magnetic and bold personality through her career as a world-traveling designer of exquisite boutique ho-tels in glamorous destinations like Russia, the Virgin Islands, and Dubai. As she matured and embraced the joys of love and motherhood, Lauren yearned for stability and established her own ven-ture, Lauren Collander Interiors within the walls of a stunning 1865 Victorian home on Jefferson. Her commitment to preserving the city's success is further exemplified by her active involvement on the board of the Downtown Naperville Alliance. Lauren's passion for renovating a home to match the way a client wants to live shines through her work contributing to the restor-ation of the Historic 1904 Bauer Mansion. With a keen eye for detail, she skillfully in-corporated timeless materials like wood and marble, while also respecting original features such as stained glass windows and wall paneling. One of the hallmarks of Lauren's approach is her dedication to incorporating her clients' cherished possessions into an eclectic design, finding innovative ways to repurpose them within the overall aesthetic. Lauren envisions homes that reflect a down-to-earth elegance in 2024, tailored to the unique needs and desires of each individual. From golf simulators to champagne bars, bold wall-coverings to specialty lighting, she strives to create spaces that truly resonate with her clients. One notable project she recently com-pleted was a Music-Lover's Family Abode, where she incorporated built-in cabinetry with deep drawers for sheet music, a recording stu-dio, and even a jazz bar. Every day brings new excitement and opportu-nities for Lauren. She recently fulfilled a long-held dream by designing an iconic home by the world famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright on Delavan Lake in Wisconsin. With a rockstar team by her side, she feels grateful for the chance to collaborate with her recently retired husband, allowing them to strike a harmonious balance between work and family life. -Kristen Kucharski, Photos Submitted COVER STORYGlancer Magazine • MARCH 2024 • WESTERN SUBURBS • 15

Meet Kathryn Alcock of Glen Ellyn Creative, curious and caring, Kathryn has always loved learning new things. Her dad was an artist and an engi-neer, he did everything from painting and sculpting to de-signing electrical circuits, which inspired Kathyrn’s ability to try all things unique and different. Her career captures 17 years in marketing, chef training, full-time motherhood, jewelry designer, and cur-rently the owner of Bench492. “I just love the craftsmanship and history of older pieces and one of my very favorite things to do is go on road trips to find one of a kind treasures,” Kathryn says. “I love the thrill of the hunt and the store is con-stantly evolving and the merchandising is changing so there is always something new to see.” She believes one of the trends in 2024 is to be a little less trendy. Getting ideas from Instagram and Pinterest is great, but she reminds customers to express their own personality by combining old and new; collecting things you love into your decor so it will feel more like an extension of you. “To spruce up a room easily, first declutter it,” she adds. “Then incorporate the 4 P's -- Pictures, Pil-lows, Plants, and Paint. Don't overlook how add-ing a plant or flowers in pretty containers can really warm a space and give you that cozy factor. Rear-ranging furniture can also give you an instant face-lift." Married with two college aged daughters, Kathryn feels blessed to use her creativity to give back by donating proceeds from shopping events and Oyster Shell ring dishes to support students in at-tending school through Partners in Mission in Uganda. She also volunteers with DuPage PADS, and is on the Board of the Glen Ellyn Downtown Al-liance. -Kristen Kucharski, Photos by Ruta Drulia COVER STORYGlancer Magazine • MARCH 2024 • WESTERN SUBURBS • 19

Meet Markita Young of Oswego Married with five children (18, 11, 11, 6, and 6). Alongside her role as a mother, Markita holds a bachelor's degree in Business Administration with a specializa-tion in Health Care Manage-ment. After dedicating herself to being a stay-at-home parent, Markita found herself facing a gap in her work his-tory, so began to explore her creative side through wood sign parties and de-sert plant workshops. What started as a personal space in her garage for herself and her twin daughters, who are autistic, soon evolved into a passion for succulents. With the support of her husband, Quinton, not only did it provide mental healing for Markita, it also offered sensory exposure for her girls. This became the driving force behind Markita's flourishing business, Blooming Succulents. She believes that if your dreams don't scare you, they're not big enough. With this mindset, she has successfully blended the workshop concept with horticulture, creating a unique platform for others to express creativity. Markita says incorporating plants into home design will be trending for 2024. By simply se-lecting a stylish pot and adding a plant, one can effortlessly introduce greenery into their space, bringing a sense of wholeness and positive vibes inexpensively. With her boundless passion, Markita finds joy in connecting with others within her community. She is inspired by the unity and support that defines the west subur-ban community. -Kristen Kucharski, Photos Submitted Glancer Magazine • MARCH 2024 • WESTERN SUBURBS • 21

Meet Bre Cullen of Geneva Since Bre was young, she would join her grandmother in sewing, and her grandmother would always encourage her to fearlessly explore the un-known. In addition, she would spend countless hours with her mother, who owned an antique booth and had a deep love for collecting heirlooms. In 2018, Bre took a leap of faith and opened Knot Just Upholstery. She con-tinues to find joy in working with various textures and colors of fabrics, transforming classic pieces with rich histories into modern masterpieces. Bre shares her insights on the latest trends, stating that mixing patterns and bold prints will be popular in Spring 2024. She believes that taking risks with vibrant colors and rear-ranging furniture can truly revitalize a space, giving it a fresh and new look. Inspired by Al-exander McQueen, she sees beauty in ev-erything. Beyond her business, Bre values a healthy work-life balance. Previously working as an Outdoor Recreation Guide and Montessori Teacher, she now cherishes quality time spent with her husband and their two chil-dren, Lincoln (15) and Harper (10). Grow Geneva Nature. It certainly has a funny way of grounding us. Don’t you think? We pick up on so many subtle cues from Mother Earth. Plants remind us to: trust the process, enjoy the journey, believe in tomorrow, find reassurance in new beginnings, keep growing, plant ‘seeds’… and be reminded that nothing.exists.alone. Alone. Do you think that’s why so many young adults invest time and resources in houseplants? In fact, houseplants surged in popularity during the pandemic. Whether you were innately blessed with a green thumb, plants & flowers have a palpable effect on our wellbeing. It’s the way they look, feel and smell. Bright greens invoke feelings of cheerfulness and relaxation. And research suggests plants are mood-boosting and restorative - simply put: they make us happy and healthy. If you’re in the market for some new leafy friends this Spring, we’ve got just the place - Grow Geneva! GG is a charming plant shop in downtown Geneva; offering an assortment of planty goodness, plantaccessories, gifts and party favors. Upcoming March classes include: Watercolor Roses, Spring Hat Embroidery, Houseplant 101, Houseplant 201 and Macrame Shelf. And don’t miss out on its Monthly Plant Club! As we continue to spend more-and-more time indoors, it’s only natural to crave pieces of nature inside! Notably, there is a huge biophilic movement in the commercial design indus-try - clients, employees and designers all understand the impor-tance of connectivity. May we continue to inspire those spaces where we work, live and play. -Brianna Bartemeyer, Photos SubmittedUNIQUEUNIQUE IN SUBURBIAin Suburbia26 • WESTERN SUBURBS • MARCH 2024 • Glancer Magazine

by Mindy Kyle / Photos SubmittedJulie Jancius Angels and Awakening: How to Raise Your Vibration and Hear your Angels WHEATON–Follow your intuition. Listen to your gut. Have you ever done the opposite and found yourself saying, “Ugh. I should have lis-tened to my gut?” Wheaton resident Julie Jancius explains this intuition as the voice of your soul guided by your spirit team on the Other Side. She is known as The Angel Medium® and regularly works with celebri-ties and CEO’s giving readings and personally teaching them to fine tune their intuition. In her podcast, Angels and Awakening, she inter-views top spiritual teachers and thought leaders from around the world. It is ranked #5 of the top spiritual podcasts worldwide and has received up to 65,000 downloads a week. Besides Julie’s successful podcast, which is now being turned into a radio show, her multi-faceted business includes her Angel Reiki school, 1:1 readings, running retreats and cur-rently a free 3-day angel fest available to anyone. Julie’s book, Angels and Awakening: How to Raise Your Vibration and Hear your Angels, was written to help teach anyone who is interested in knowing more about raising their vibration, connecting with their an-gels and following their soul’s life plan. “Your vibration is like a radio,” says Julie. “When you’re not on the right station, all you hear is static, but as soon as you fine tune it to the right station, you can hear the DJ clearly. In this case, you are able to clearly hear your angels and loved ones on the other side.” She has given over 7,000 readings and when working with a large number of people, has seen what information the majority is missing. “I wanted this book to fill in those missing pieces for them to help them connect to their angels.” Angels and Awakening is available online at Amazon and Barnes and Noble. MOM’S Rooftops, DJs, FoodTrucks, Shuffleboard CHICAGO–Nestled amidst the bustling streets of Bucktown lies a hidden gem and unique blend of leisure and competition. Founded on the principles of camaraderie and recreation, the Royal Palms Shuffleboard Club offers an unparalleled experi-ence for those seeking an escape from the ordinary. I hadn’t played shuffleboard since I was 10! When we first walked in we were immediately transported to a world where time slows down, and enjoyment takes center stage. The ambi-ance is inviting, with vintage decor and a laid-back atmosphere that instantly makes you feel like you’re on vacation. At the heart of the club lies its crown jewel: the shuffleboard courts. We were seated in Cabana 9 which was situated in an elevated platform above the courts. Our host presented a sig-nature cocktail menu, in addition to the full service bar options. In addition, he pointed out the food truck tucked ever so neatly on the side inside a heated garage; the vintage Viewmasters sit-uated inside the ivy, the glamorous Royal Palms Shuffleboard Club selfie spot with silly props and a hula hoop; and the super sized Connect Four games. little black book34 • WESTERN SUBURBS • MARCH 2024 • Glancer Magazine

Next, they demonstrated the basic rules of shuffle-board, including scoring, and we then divided into teams and slid our way to victory. The strategic na-ture of shuffleboard was perfect for our very com-petitive group which kept the players on their toes until the final point was scored. Royal Palms Shuffleboard Club offers more than just a place to play; it's a social hub where mem-ories are made and a DJ plays. The background music is set at just the right level so you can ap-preciate the beats, while also hearing your friends talk! To top it off, there is an amazing rooftop built for summer fun including another court, special events, and a bonus bar making this venue the per-fect fit for any season of the year. In the end, we had a blast! A fantastic modern twist on an old sport! Second Act Scene 2 Geneva WINFIELD–We jump into March with the hope that the cold, dark depressing days of winter are finally behind us. The sunshine and warm air always lifts my spirits. However, there are so many people in our communities who aren’t able to find a way to dig themselves out of that sad state without a little help. Whether it be a family member quietly suffering through depression or anx-iety, the ADHD kid who can’t sit still in class or a co-worker wrestling with addiction, all of us are touched by untreated men-tal health illness or difficult life problems at some point. Unfortunately, so many are left struggling, needing help, but don’t have any-where to turn due to financial constraints. That is where Second Act Scene 2 is able to step in and make a differ-ence. Second Act Scene 2 is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit coun-seling agency in Geneva that originated in 2016 and serves mostly the Kane County cities throughout the Fox Valley area. They seek to break down the stigma of men-tal health for those who don’t have insurance or are un-derinsured and have lesser financial means. “My background is in Special Education,” says Amy Ben-nett, Community Outreach Director for the organization, “so my heart is to help those that feel unheard and un-seen. We want to partner with them as they choose to make improved changes in their lives.” Second Act Scene 2 has a special team of trained therapists to meet their clients where they are on their journey, plus there are specific therapists trained to work with children from ages 3 on up; each with a differ-ent focus or specialty. “We are currently developing a 4-week workshop on So-cial and Emotional Learn-ing for parents and kids. Self-awareness is the first step towards positive change.” Second Act Scene 2 is completely reliant on char-itable funds and has two community fundraisers every year. This spring they are hosting the Help & Hope 5K on Saturday, May 11th at 9am held at Le Roy Oakes Forest Pre-serve in St. Charles. Their fall event is a bike event usually held in September. Anyone can sign-up to par-ticipate, or just donate for a worthy cause. For more information on Second Act Scene 2 or to sign up for their 5K, please visit www.secondactscene2.org. www.secondactscene2.org/ ABOUT THE WRITER Mindy Kyle is passionate about helping people discover what brings them joy and to live a full, healthy and happy life. She has her Master of Fine Arts degree in creative writing from DePaul University and is a veteran of Chicago’s theater and com-mercial world as well as a graduate of the Second City Improv School. DANCING IN ST. CHARLES 3rd Street Dance ST. CHARLES–In the heart of historic downtown St. Charles, 3rd Street Dance stands as a testament to the vision of owner and di-rector, Alice Williams. Williams grew up in St. Charles, and 27 years ago, embarked on a mission to create a non-competitive dance stu-dio that inspires students to believe in themselves, spread joy and build lifelong friendships. It’s a home where, as she says, “Kids can be kids, have fun, and find their best friend.” At 3rd Street Dance, students embrace the beauty of dance without worrying about external pressures. As the only local St. Charles studio affiliated with the national organization More Than Just Great Dancing®, they takes pride in providing a quality curriculum and a safe and nurturing environment for its young dancers to grow and flourish. Dance has the power to bring about positive change in a com-munity. 3rd Street Dance give back, organizing charity events and fundraisers, using passion for dance to raise awareness for local causes. These experiences teach young dancers the value of em-pathy, compassion, and the joy of helping others. The studio’s non-competitive approach to dance has allowed count-less children to discover the joy of movement and creativity without the fear of judgment. As Williams continues to champion the belief that “kids should be kids for as long as humanly possible,” the 3rd Street Dance legacy lives on by offering a variety of classes focus ing on fun, learning, and growth.
