ARTS ENTERTAINMENT M O N T H LY CO LU M N To Give To Inspire GENEVA CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION OF GENEVA In my school years from elementary through college and beyond I was always involved in the performing arts It is one of my true passions in life to perform and entertain The joy of working with like minded creative people and talented directors to create entertaining programming is a fantastic experience full of learning and self expression There is no doubt that the performing arts benefit not only the performers but their audiences as well The City of Geneva wanted to bring more rewards to the community through the performing arts and various other art forms and in 2006 created by ordinance the Geneva Cultural Arts Commission GCAC The purpose of GCAC is to recommend policies and programs supporting the arts sponsor public art programs and projects create an arts center and develop a business plan for the arts that contributes to the economic development of Geneva For performing arts they have developed programs such as Shakespeare in the Park where local or regional Shakespeare troupes come to town for summer performances In early March Geneva holds a Film Festival featuring a variety of film styles from new and upcoming filmmakers across the U S and overseas and every Sunday evening in July music fills the air at their RiverPark Summer Series along the Fox River where each week a different musical genre is featured The GCAC also wanted to incorporate physical art into their civic landscape Annually an artist is commissioned to design and fabricate a functional sculptured bicycle rack to replace the 14 Glancer Magazine AUGUST 2018 KANE COUNTY generic ones currently in place Later this summer the third location of one of these racks will be at the Post Office along James Street The commission is really excited about this piece as everything about it says GENEVA says Tim Vetang GCAC Chair There is also a program that was created for Geneva High School and Middle School artists to design and decorate Pace Bus Shelters along Randall Road Each art panel is 6 x 10 feet and is very visible from the road Residents have jumped into their Art on Fire program where they can reserve a fire hydrant anywhere in town and design and paint it Throughout the year participation is strong for our events and we regularly get ideas and suggestions from the community says Tim We take those very seriously and try to incorporate them into our programming For more information on events and participating in the GCAC events visit them at www geneva il us 114 CulturalArts Commission Mindy s August Giving Inspiration Tip a cab driver or Uber driver generously ABOUT THE WRITER Mindy Kyle is the owner of Be Inspired Studios and is passionate about helping people discover what brings them joy and to live a full healthy and happy life She has her Masters in Fine Arts degree in creative writing from DePaul University and lives in Naperville with her husband three children and the cutest dog in the land

COVER STORY by Kristen Kucharski Photos by Mike Catuara Unless Submitted Celebrating THE ARTS Taking in a good play musical concert or comedy show is an experience that could elicit any number of emotions Live performances touch parts Jeff Hunt ST CHARLES At age 4 Jeff sang in the church choir by 12 he played Oliver in the musical Oliver at Wheaton College and then went on to sing at St Charles High School In 1977 while in college at Taylor University he accepted the role of choir director at Zion Lutheran Church in Upland Indiana In 1984 Jeff founded the St Charles Singers then called the Mostly Madrigal Singers I began the choir really as a result of being so inspired by choral singing from my student days Jeff shares of your soul and make you smile cry laugh and maybe even cheer We caught Jeff is fortunate that his full time job is doing what he loves most music He is the Choir Director for the St Charles Singers as well as the Director of Music at Baker Memorial United Methodist Church in St Charles In addition he is an adjunct professor of music at Elgin Community College up with a few of our residents that are a part of creating and presenting our local performing arts productions to explore what they do 20 Glancer Magazine AUGUST 2018 KANE COUNTY I think the most rewarding part of my experience with the choir is creating beauty together as a family of voices and seeing and hearing the result of everyone feeling important in the process he says Our sometimes weary world with all its challenges lives for moments of beauty and happiness and it is a joy to be able to contribute something positive in even the smallest way Jeff looks forward to the St Charles Singers 35th annual concert season with a Mozart Festival Weekend in St Charles the weekend of August 24 26th
COVER STORY Bailey Cates ELBURN This 16 year old trumpet player is not the type of person to share her emotions through words but expresses herself through music From birth to kindergarten Bailey went to work with her mom at Hamilton Wings and spent a lot of time with the musicians actors and visual artists She began piano at 5 classical guitar at 8 and trumpet at 11 years old Along the way she performed a solo recital and raised 1 000 to donate to Kaneland Arts Initiative As a freshman now at Kaneland High School KHS Bailey auditioned for the Guitar Foundation of America s Summit and became one of the top 30 internationally chosen 14 18 year old classical guitarists She also auditioned into the District IX Band on Principal Trumpet 2 AND Lead and or 2nd Trumpet for the Jazz Band and earned Lead Trumpet for the 2018 Illinois Music Education Association ILMEA All State Jazz Band Additionally Bailey shares her musical talents with the Elgin Youth Symphony Orchestra EYSO Honors Chamber Ensemble Sterling Brass Quintet I love EYSO for the quality of education that I receive Bailey says The most important part of a performance is the story so we learn how to express emotion through music not just how to read and play it This summer has been filled with well earned scholarships to band camps at Indiana University s Jacob s School of Music in Bloomington Indiana and Eastman School of Music in Rochester New York Bailey s resume is chalked full of awards prestige and dedication Ashlie Anderson MONTGOMERY Ashlie started dancing at Turning Point in Elmwood Park and continued at the Academy of Movement and Music in Oak Park where she performed with the resident company MOMENTA She went on to get her Bachelor s in Dance Performance and Management in the Arts from Northern Illinois University She interned at Jacobs Pillow Dance Festival in MA and then worked at State Street Dance Studio formerly of Geneva taking ownership till 2017 Unfortunately State Street Dance Studio closed doors but didn t close Ashlie s dream to have dance in her life She formed Fox Valley Ballet a 501c3 non profit organization which brings the joy and artistry of dance through pre professional ballet training and performances including the full length ballet production of The Nutcracker alive in Batavia with over 100 members ranging in age from 5 to 70 years old This married mother of two is committed and inspired by the true passion of her dancers It takes tough skin to do what we do but we keep doing it because of the dedication we have to the art and our students she says I will also be starting a scholarship fund through Fox Valley Ballet for those dancers in the area that require financial need as well as merit for their talents Beyond volunteering as the Artistic Director of Fox Valley Ballet Ashlie serves as the Director of Ballet at A Step Above Dance Academy in Batavia and also teaches at Dancequest in Plainfield She looks forward to starting a dance festival in Fox Valley in 2019 Glancer Magazine AUGUST 2018 KANE COUNTY 21

setup in a gym or in your yard or wherever you want to play So for our Glancer Magazine readers in St Charles Geneva Batavia Sugar Grove Downers Grove Wheaton Glen Ellyn and Naperville that means it s as close to home as you want it to be Even at your home We chose to play outside in my backyard What started out as a cheerleaders bonding event turned into friends co workers cheerleaders and siblings all at war We loaded our Blasters and hid behind our bunkers until the whistle sounded The goal was simple hit the opposing team and eliminate the competition A lot like paint ball but a lot less painful The game of Capture the Flag required a bit more strategy we needed to work together to protect our man so he she could get the flag We had people army crawling and hiding behind castle walls while attempting to take out the opponent to ensure our complete success to capture the flag It was fun for everyone as we had kids as young as 12 and adults as old as 47 You only have to be 6 years old and only need at least 6 participants to play the game so it perfect for just about anything from birthday parties to family reunions to corporate and PTA school events Play style is totally busy DR MOM INTRODUCING WEST SUBURBAN DR MOM Dr Kelly Smith Leaving the house at 6pm arriving back at 8am and caring for a husband and five children can be a struggle but Dr Kelly Smith works hard to balance the many aspects of life as a physician and mother Dr Smith has one child of her own a 4 month old as well as 4 stepchildren ages 9 16 With a typical work day being from 7pm to 7am working in Rush Copley s emergency room life can be very exhausting at times When asking Dr Smith how she makes it all work she replied I have a sitter one day a week and my husband is home on the weekends so I can sleep she said Even on her days off Dr Smith still has a full schedule of everyday duties as a mother and wife I m kept busy with my infant then preparing dinner for my stepchildren on Tuesday and Thursdays she spoke about her schedule on her days off Dr Smith shared that she always tries to have a home cooked meal prepared for the kids whenever she is home representing her love for her children and their healthy lifestyle During Dr Smith s college years her hopes of being a physician came about I loved the idea that my knowledge can improve someone s life Dr Smith shared her passion for her job Being a physician allows me to use my skills to solve incredibly complex and fascinating disease processes she explained On top of Dr Smith s countless dreams for her future her main goal is to raise a happy healthy kind and smart daughter Regarding her daughter s future she explained I would support my child becoming a doctor if it was a passion of hers Dr Smith continued her statement with her thoughts about the changed world of medicine today Unfortunately medicine isn t as pure as it used to be explaining with a tone of disappointment To Dr Smith she sees medicine as being tainted by insurance companies the huge risk of litigation an insane number of administrators and bureaucrats and high drug costs However these changing factors to the world of medicine do not change Dr Smith s dedication or passion for her occupation She simply cannot foreshadow how the medical field may evolve when her daughter has grown but Dr Smith will support her daughter and
