AWARD-WINNING WERK FORCE BREWING PLAINFIELD–Illinois boasts a handful of fun summertime activities. Between beach days, patio dining, ballpark jaunts, zoo visits, walk-ing tours, theme parks and backyard bbqs, our calendars quickly fill with anticipatory excitement. In fact, another activity that’s on the rise is ‘beer travel’. These dedicated beer fans travel across the country to experience an array of IPA, stouts, lagers, ales and ciders. And did you know Chicago has been recognized as one of the best craft beer scenes in the country? Introducing: Werk Force Brewing. Werk Force Brewing, located in Plainfield, is an experimental brew-ery that began production in 2014. After gaining popularity, its tap room opened in 2017. WFB will be celebrating its 8th anniversary June 23 - June 26. This fun-filled weekend will be accompanied by live music and a new IPA release called ‘Thank You’. The property includes: a tasting room, brewery, kitchen (thanks to a recent partnership with Happy Belly Chefs, a Channahon-based catering company), private event space (The Barrel Den) and an outdoor, dog-friendly patio. This award-winning brewery is known for its variety and unique ingredients. Fan favorites include: Blues of Mexicali, Barrel Aged Farmhouse Vultures with Blackberries & Raspberries and its line of Sleepy Bear Imperial Stouts (try its re-cent 2022 release: Bourbon Barrel Aged Mint Chocolate Chip Sleepy Bear. Tasting notes: chocolate mousse, klondike bars and fresh mint - yes, please!). And they make their own in-house sodas. Fun fact: all label art includes professional photography from the owner's trips across the US, too. SUMMER IN ST. CHARLES How to Play Golf as a Family ST. CHARLES–Having fun is most important when introducing your children to the game of golf. Let’s take a tip from the master of family entertainment – Dis-neyTM, which continually stresses the need to view the world through the eyes of a child. By playing from the same tees and using clubs that will travel the same distance as your child’s stroke, you will get to spend quality time during the round and create a realistic goal for your child of hitting shots further than you. I highly recommend practicing on a putting green or short game practice area that provide a great opportunity to teach proper posture, grip and alignment. One of my favorite activities is to form teams among family members and create competitions. The ultimate benefit is improvement in putting and short game which account for nearly 70% of the shots taken in a normal round of golf. Re-member the goal is to have fun, be creative, and let your child create games that are fun through their eyes while instructive in the fundamentals through your eyes. However, four years ago, an idea for a novel sprung from a true story her friend told her from her daughter’s cheerleading event, and now she is the proud author of her first book, Sarah’s Fall. “Cheerleading isn’t exactly the safest sport, and teenage girls are about the most volatile creatures on the planet, so it seemed a topic worth exploring,” says Paula. Sarah’s Fall starts with a twenty-year high school reunion amongst friends reminiscing about their senior year in 1995, and Sarah Blake’s memory of friendships, questionable loyalties and the cascade of events that culminated into a single moment where it all went wrong. Weaving in nostalgia and a coming-of-age story, Paula explores human nature and touches on impor-tant themes like obsessive jealousy, teenage friendship, parental guidance and forgiveness. “The story provokes the question, how long should you suffer for a mistake you made when you were a teenager,” says Paula, “and whose forgiveness do you need -society’s or your own?” With raising three kids and working full-time, it is an achievement to finally cross the finish line on her first novel. Currently, Sarah’s Fall is available for purchase on Amazon in paperback and Kin-dle. LITERAARRYYlocalKNOW A LOCAL AUTHOR?  We’d Love to Meet Them! Caretakers by nature, Katie was a NICU RN at Lurie Children’s hospital, then a nurse practitioner; and Tim worked as a firefighter with a background in athletics and performance optimization. Personally dedicated to a healthy and active lifestyle, with a focus on functional medicine, they opened Peak Health Institute providing cutting edge therapies to bring individuals options for taking their health to the next level through improved mind and body function. “We help moms to get stronger, repair their hormonal balance, improve cognitive function and become their best version of themselves,” Katie shares. “We help executives to optimize brain health and cognitive func-tion and athletes to excel by optimizing their cellular health and mitochondrial health. On the flip side of that, we work hard with chronically sick individuals to help them regain their life.” Some of their favorite tools to promote health optimization are medical weight loss, bioidentical hormone therapy, peptide ther-apy, vitamin IV infusions, ozone therapy, sauna and detoxifica-tion programs, and NAD+. One of their trendier offerings is EMSCULPTneo for body contouring, decreasing fat by 30% and increasing muscle by 25% in targeted areas. Having babies and creating a family can be such a joy for the parents, but where do you go for help when that joy is replaced by anxiety, depression and stress? Postpartum mood disorders are the most common com-plications of childbirth, affect-ing one in five birthing people. Yet, it receives the least amount of screening, education and recognition than other less common complications. Suicide attempts during preg-nancy and after childbirth are increasing, nearly tripling over the past decade. After experiencing depression and anxiety during her last pregnancy (in 2004), Lara Vazquez (with OB Nurse Sophie Bowerman) made several unsuccessful attempts to convince her local hospital to host a postpartum support group. In-stead, the pair decided to use their personal experience and peer support training to begin Mom2Mom DuPage. Mom2Mom provides a safe and judgment-free group setting to receive support and education for the mental health issues many pregnant and new parents struggle with. “The anxiety, despair and isolation I felt during my pregnancy were unlike anything I have ever felt,” says Lara. “I knew I could not be the only one feeling this way, and once I recov-ered it became my mission to talk about my experiences.” Mom2Mom has helped hundreds of parents by providing free peer-to-peer support groups to talk about the sometimes scary and challenging symptoms you simply don’t hear about or see in mainstream media. Leslie Bradley, once an at-tendee that struggled with de-pression during pregnancy and postpartum OCD, is now a group facilitator. She is a social worker and a Certified Perinatal Mental Health Spe-cialist. Most of the group’s funding comes from their annual fund-raising event, Climb Out of the Darkness, co-sponsored by Postpartum Support Inter-national. The Climb provides an opportunity for parents, families and providers to gather to share stories, pro-vide support, raise awareness and raise funds. This year’s Climb event is scheduled for Saturday, June 25th at 10:00 am at Herrick Lake in Wheaton. To attend or to do-nate, find the information at www.climbout2022.causevox.com/team/team-dupage Mom2Mom will resume in-person meetings this July in down-town Wheaton in a new location! They are seeking vol-unteers to supervise siblings, or in-kind donations such as refreshments and items for self-care “starter kits” for new members. “There are still so many new parents we need to reach,” says Leslie. “We must do better – for ourselves, our loved ones, our communities and our world.” To learn more or get involved, visit www.mom2momdg.org ABOUT THE WRITER Mindy Kyle is passionate about helping people discover what brings them joy and to live a full, healthy and happy life. Choose How You Age: How Strength Determines Your Fate Have you ever wondered what it is that differentiates a functional 80+-year-old who is able-bodied and on the move vs. those who are immobile and ailing? One major differentiating factor is the level of musculoskeletal strength that is present. When you begin to think about maintaining strength as you age, you might envision lifting weights and doing rigorous activities. However, it is actually your core strength and grip strength that are the two aspects of strength most closely tied to aging gracefully. The natural deterioration of core muscle tissue begins as early as in our 30s. Without regular training, core strength will likely decline to the point where it contributes to making life difficult by age 50. Without regular strength training, core muscle fibers shrink and be-come less flexible. These muscles anchor our spine, which is the epicenter of maintaining our body’s function. This is the number one factor that contributes to the risk of injury, back pain, and low mobility as one begins to age. An excellent option for aging individuals to gain muscle, core strength, and if needed, shrink fat cells, is EMSCULPT NEO. It is a device that uses radiofrequency and contraction to stimulate muscle contraction while the heat from the RF simultaneously kills fat cells. The non-invasive body shaping procedure provides simultaneous fat elimination and muscle building in a combined 30-minute ses-sion. It’s easier to prevent decline than to reverse it. So the younger you begin to focus on this major necessity, the more likely you are to age with strength and ability. ABOUT THE WRITER Katie McManigal is a board-certified nurse practitioner who specializes in functional and regenerative medi-cine. Her mission and passion are in bringing optimal health to each individual she serves. CHARLES–Jill Card opened Jeans and a Cute Top after years of working in retail and corporate sales jobs, wearing boring suits, un-comfortable panty hose, and predictable white dress shirts. The name was in-spired by her first date with her husband when she asked, “What should I wear?” and her husband replied: “Jeans and a cute top.” When Jill was getting ready for that first date, she didn’t have a great pair of jeans or a cute top in her closet and had to borrow an outfit from her sister, a flight attendant with a much more fun wardrobe. As she got older, Jill couldn’t find any great jeans for women in their 30s and 40s. Stores catered to teenagers or grandmas. The unflattering ‘Mom’ jeans filled in that age gap. Now, in Jill’s closet, you’ll find about 40 pairs of jeans. She has 8-10 pairs in regular rotation. Her go-to, favorite pair is the Gia from Liverpool—the denim is super soft and keeps its shape. Jeans & A Cute Top is the solution for women who don’t want to look ridiculous trying to dress like their daughters but also refuse to settle for shapeless lounge wear. Jill hand selects every item in the store, going to trade shows looking for style over trend, and finding affordable, beautiful clothes that work for all women, not just size 0 models. You will find Jill working the floor of one of her shops every day—she is committed to changing the world for women one great fitting pair of jeans at a time. www.jeansandacutetop.com Expires 7-31-22Shop Gallery

The last time I took my girls was to Garden Patch Farms in Homer Glen back in 2011. We had such a great time, I just knew I wanted to ex-perience it again, so I headed to McCann Berry Farm which has over three acres of blueberries for picking. It’s rural, quaint, and family owned and operated. Bob and Mary McCann planted their first strawberry crop in 1982, in rural Wood-stock, on land bordering the North Branch of the Kishwaukee River. Blueberry picking season generally begins mid July and is over by early August so the window is slim to grab your fresh blueberries from their U-Pick Farm. We pulled up to the easy and convenient parking just steps from the blueberry bushes and were surprised to see rows and rows and rows of well manicured walkways and endless picking options including some quarter-size blueberries! They provide buckets to make your collection convenient and checkout is easy but don’t forget your cash as no credit cards are accepted. After carefully selecting our berries, we admired the rows of beautiful sunflowers that were also available for purchase. The beauty of the farmland provided the perfect backdrop for a relax-ing afternoon in the city best known for its role as a lead filming loca-tion for movies and series like Prison Break (2005-2017); GroundHog Day (1993); and Planes, Tranes, & Automobiles (1987).
