Glancer Magazine • JULY 2021 • WESTERN SUBURBS • 9Christina Lee Embry “Live for today, plan for to-morrow, party tonight! A good party provides a lifetime of great vibes!” WHEATON–Never underestimate the power of a woman watching Real Housewives and drinking wine, as it is here that the best ideas for self-suffi-ciency and providing for your children as a single mom are created! All jokes aside, that is exactly what Christina did when she was about to become a single mom and needed a plan. She was watching the Real Housewives and noticed they all had bartenders, waitstaff, and event coordinators. Having a background in all those, combined with a love of throwing great parties, she decided to pull together all her savings and be-come an entrepreneur; hence Traveling Tavern was born in 2018. Historically, Christina started working in the bar in-dustry at a very young age and by twenty-one, she became the youngest and first female manager at a large, busy night club in Pen-sacola, Florida. She also always hosted Halloween and Christmas Eve parties and had a knack for mixology and creating unique one-of-a-kind cocktails that made every event a success. She honed the skill of catering outstand-ing customer service and translated that to becoming known as the best party host in town with her traveling bar, karaoke, and trivia parties; as well as the gift of also bring-ing that party to children in the hospital. Growing up Christina had a friend who spent most of his days in the hospital. She recalls his mom dec-orating his hospital room for every occasion - Easter, Birthday, St. Paddy's Day, etc. - and how it transformed the cold walls of the hospital and made it feel like home; so, she created Traveling Wishes with a mission to bring the party to them during their challenge and decorate as many hospital walls as possible. Sara Turnquist “Some of the best summer memories are made in flip flops” –Kellie Elmore NAPERVILLE–Some of Sara’s favorite childhood summer memories are of the Farmington Fourth of July Parade, Block Party and Talent Show. She moved into the Farmington Subdivision of Naperville over 35 years ago when it was just being developed. Her family was one of the first five families in that neigh-borhood and because of that her parents had an ex-tremely close group of friends that planned lots of fun events to get to know one another and bring the community together, such as the annual July 4th celebration. “I remember decorating bikes for the bike parade, playing backyard games and running through the blocked off streets with my friends,” Sara says. “In the evening there was a neighborhood talent show and just about everyone participated with dances and skits complete with costumes and props. It makes me smile just thinking about all the good times we had in our early years in Naperville.” With so few experiences for high school seniors this year, Sara really wanted to make Senior Year Prom memorable for her daugh-ter Ava and her closest friends. She wanted to ensure Ava could look back at this big day years from now and also, ‘just smile thinking about it’. Just prior to prom, Sara purchased matching gold butterfly necklaces for Ava and her friends as their graduation gift and chose that gift as the theme of the prom pre-party. “My dear friend, Courtney Perry, helped me in ordering the pale pink robes and flip flops and provided the personalization on behalf of her company, Crushed Goods,” she says. “I wanted the robes to be something the girls could use again in college; we kept the design simple with gold accents and a delicate butterfly added to each robe. As the girls arrived and put on their robes and flip flops, they headed upstairs where I had vanities and desks set up with lighted make-up mirrors, each girl had a spot to do their hair and makeup.” While the girls got ready laughing and singing along to their favorite songs, a light lunch was set up for them downstairs. During lunch, I shared their graduation gift and a poem I wrote tying together the new chapter of their life and the sym-bol of the butterfly. I wanted the girls to have special mem-ories of their senior prom and am so proud of how the event turned out. The girls were extremely grateful and had a won-derful time together and of course all looked beautiful!” (continued)Glancer Magazine • JULY 2021 • WESTERN SUBURBS • 11COVER STORY

12 • WESTERN SUBURBS • JULY 2021 • Glancer MagazineCOVER STORY Surrounded by a supportive group of parents that were determined to bring joy to these seniors as their time at Neuqua Valley High School ended and summer 2021 was just beginning, The Last Dance was hosted by the Milivojevic family, complete with a red carpet, food truck, DJ, Prom King and Queen crowning, and of course comfy slippers and themed t-shirts for all. The night created memories that will last a lifetime and now Sara and her husband look forward to celebrating July 4th with an extended group of friends. The cele-bration originally started at the Bolingbrook Golf Club for food, games and fireworks and has since shifted to Spoon Lake where friends have homes. “It's usually 6 or 7 families that come up for a night or two and enjoy time in the lake, on the boat and watching fireworks,” Sara says. “It's something everyone looks forward to each year. When hosting, I think a great event happens when you make it personal for your guests. I love themed events because it makes it easier to set your menu, choose your decor and the rest just falls into place. Simple decorations and centerpieces can help tie it all together and of course I'm a sucker for fun napkins and plates.” The pre-prom party Butterfly theme was a huge hit and Sara looks forward to building a lifetime of smiles for her family and her children. Pom!

COVER STORYCourtney Cummings “Live your life with kindness and enjoyment. Throw a party and have a good time!” WESTERN SUBURBS–Go big or go home – that is Courtney’s life motto. She takes nothing for granted. Her family is everything and throwing parties for all her people is what matters most – she is thrilled to be able to do that again. “We tried really hard to have kids and Olivia is our miracle baby, so I am fully aware that life is too short and unexpected,” Courtney says. “I try to live life to the fullest and make this life the best it can be for my daughter. Every milestone, accomplishment, birthday is a reason for a big celebra-tion in our house.” Her daughter Olivia is going into the 4th grade at River Woods Elemen-tary in Naperville, is active at Elevate Dance in Naperville, plays tennis at 5 Star in Plainfield, park district softball, and takes private piano les-sons. “I love throwing parties and I am always trying to one up my own party,” Courtney says. “I wanted to throw something that we hadn't done before and came ac-ross the Steel Canteen. It was a huge hit! The bar is stunning, and everyone just kept talking about how unique and cool the experience is.” With the fold-down platform deck, cocktail tables, 16ft long bar and color-changing LED lighting - by the time nightfall hit – the bar was glowing, the music was going, and everyone had a great time. Neighbors saw the fun and started trickling in, and the party went until 2 a.m. - way past Courtney’s bed-time!! Growing up, Courtney’s parents always had family and friends over in the summer and those are some of her best childhood memories; so, she is recreating those moments for her own family. “We have a big 4th of July pool party every year that all the adults and kids look forward to,” she adds. “My brother and I started throwing a spike ball party a few years ago. Friends and family come over for a fierce com-petition, food, and fire pit.” Courtney always wants her guests to enjoy themselves, relish in the laughter and joy, and wake up the next day and reminisce about the great time they all had.Glancer Magazine • JULY 2021 • WESTERN SUBURBS • 13Photos by Mike CatuaraPom!

FOX RIVER QUEEN All Aboard this Historical Adventure It’s hard to deny the beauty of the Fox River from any point along the shore whether you’re biking the trail, fishing on Boy Scout Island or looking out from the historic tower at Pottawato-mie Park. But nothing can quite compare to experiencing the Fox River during a paddlewheel riverboat cruise on the waterway itself. Step aboard the Fox River Queen or St. Charles Belle II to experience for yourself the history, the natural beauty and the local pride via a paddlewheel riverboat in your own community. Enjoy travel from the era of Mark Twain through a green corridor of scenic beauty. Both boats have open-air upper decks for unobstructed sightseeing and the lower decks have windows that can be closed in cool or rainy weather. The riverboat cruises have been a main attraction in St. Charles since the 1940s, when the late Chet Anderson bought his first boat and began charter-ing cruises from Pottawatomie Park. And this tradition continues under the ownership of the St. Charles Park District. COSLEY ZOO WHEATON–In our fast-paced modern world, the interest in exotic, native and local wildlife continues to fuel our curiosity. We’ve learned how human im-pact affects animal existence and our shared nat-ural environment. Zoos have the unique opportunity to create meaningful connections be-tween people and animals - with a shifted focus on education, conservation and community. In fact, the Association of Zoos and Aquariums rewards only 10% of USDA-licensed animal exhibitors with AZA-accreditation - the gold standard for animal care, welfare, conser-vation and education. Enter Cosley Zoo in Wheaton. This owned-and-operated Wheaton Park District zoo houses 20 exhibits, more than 200 animals and represents over 50 species - plus, it’s open year-round! A variety of domestic farm animals and Illinois wildlife call this five-acre zoo home - including: owls, ducks, turkey vultures, goats, donkeys, llamas, snakes and turtles. By partnering with licensed wildlife rehabilitators, CZ provides per-manent homes for wild animals who are unable to be released back into nature. Each habitat is notably de-signed to best suit the animal’s unique needs and nat-ural behaviors. Be sure to visit Val (resident bobcat!) and Pits - a 42-year-old, three-toed box turtle! And the kids will love the duck pond. Fun fact! Through the Blanding’s Turtle Recovery Proj-ect, a local conservation initiative to protect Illinois’ en-dangered blanding turtles, CZ (in partnership with Forest Preserve District of DuPage County) released more than 3,000 turtles back into the wild! By experiencing wildlife up close, we hope it encourages and inspires you to help conserve and admire the world around you. Fat Rosie's Taco and Tequila Bar NAPERVILLE–Have you been? If not, you’re missing out, for sure! Fat Rosie’s is a fun, hip & festive family-friendly Mexican Taqueria featuring a modern take on traditional Mexican cuisine and craft cocktails. The story behind this place is adorably fun! On a trip to Mexico after opening his first couple of restaurants, Chef/Proprietor, Scott Harris met a wonderful old Agave farmer with a dedicated pet donkey. This man’s steadfast donkey had worked alongside him in the Agave fields for over 20 years! While most people would disregard their work animal, the old man farmer treated Fat Rosie as part of the family. They had a rare and insep-arable bond that had formed through the many years of hard work, sweat, and tears. Scott admired the love and care that this old man had for his trusted donkey. He admired it so much in fact, that one night after many shots of tequila he promised the old farmer he would one day open a tequila bar and name it after the beloved donkey, Fat Rosie. And, he did just that. www.fatrosies.com NEXT STOP: NAPERVILLEWEST SUBURBAN DININGDININGDINING + COCKTAILS28 • WESTERN SUBURBS • JULY 2021 • Glancer Magazine

They were regular clients when they took over ownership in 2009. Richard maintained his job as a Forensic Accountant, but also now holds the titles of CFO, Delivery Man, IT and Maintenance Guru for Entrée Kitchen; while Diane loves having complete autonomy to do whatever is necessary to take care of their kitchen team and customers on a day-to-day basis while balancing their family life of raising their three teenage sons who are active in swim, the Civil Air Patrol, band, and orchestra. The family works together to support local school PTAs by offering fund-raising programs. Although it may appear, Entrée Kitchen is like other “meal prep” companies, there are many factors that set them apart, such as the bonus of being able to get right to cooking without the need of a knife and a cutting board to do all the prep first. This allows most of their meals to be freshly cooked in about 30 minutes versus 20 minutes of prep work first, before the cooking process even begins. Made-to-order entrees can be customized to include organic meat upgrades on many of our entrees, as well as other substitutions or eliminations to meet specific dietary restrictions; and unlike most companies, Entrée Kitchen al-lows the option of drop in and same day ordering from their well-stocked freezers with over 40+ different entrees, as well as a full complement of sides, desserts, bread, and appetizers too. An additional option is “Our weekly fresh menu, called Delicious Dinners in a Dash.” Diane says. “These entrees are available Monday afternoon through Friday and cook in 30 minutes or less. Plus, we will also have four Mother's Day Specials, a special grilling menu for Father’s Day, and offer a monthly Budding Chef's Program specifically geared toward getting the kiddos get to help out in kitchen.” With over 900 entrees in their database, finding a family favorite will be diffi-cult, but bringing dinner back to the kitchen table has never been easier! When you’re ready to explore, outdoor adventures, historical experiences and 99 miles of coastline await in Monterey County, Cal-ifornia, which is known as a scenic, beautiful expanse along the Pacific Coast. From wide-open beaches, ver-dant vineyards and fields to the peaks of the Santa Lucia Mountains, there’s plenty of room to roam. Plan a Coastal Road Trip ExcursionTravelerTRENDY TRAVELER

Glancer Magazine • JULY 2021 • WESTERN SUBURBS • 33SCENIC BEAUTY Some of the top scenic drives in the world are along California’s coast, where you’ll find a wide range of local topography. One example is Highway 1, where starting toward the north, you’ll see the state’s second largest wetlands, artichoke fields and rolling sand dunes, as well as cypress forests and the craggy coastline. Further south, you’ll encounter towering cliffs, red-woods and awe-inspiring bridges. Other notable sights include fishing ports; beaches; wildlife including seals, sea lions and sea otters; the famed Lone Cypress; mansions; and several cham-pionship golf courses. OUTDOOR ADVENTURE When you’re ready for some action, there’s plenty to find along the coast. From a captivating 18-mile long recreation trail with coastline views to kayaking, paddle boarding, surfing, whale-watching excursions and more, there are numerous ways to whet an appetite for adventure near the ocean. Inland, you’ll find options like hiking, mountain biking, rock climbing, cave exploring and horseback riding. WINE COUNTRY Along the California coast, you can find tens of thou-sands of acres of vineyards producing more than 53 dif-ferent varietals of wine. In Monterey County alone, you can take your pick among 65 tasting rooms set against picturesque backdrops. How you choose to experience wine country is as diverse as the varietals you’ll dis-cover. For example, you might head to the beach with a newly purchased bottle of your favorite wine, jump aboard a wine trolley to let someone else do the driving for a while or schedule a tour that takes you behind the scenes with a winemaker. BEACH TIME No visit to the coast is complete without a visit to the beach, but not all beaches are the same. From white sandy beaches to rocky cliffs, you could plan an entire road trip around the different kinds of beaches waiting for you to discover their beauty. Enjoy bird spotting, rock collecting, surfing, tide pooling and more. Some of the area’s greatest treasures are the lesser-known beaches, including one that sits in the middle of Cannery Row. The sheltered cove of McAbee Beach was used by Portuguese whalers in the 1850s and Chi-nese fishermen in the early 1900s. Today, this secret beach is a perfect spot to let kids burn off energy before or after a trip to the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Visitors can spot seals and otters playing offshore, and it’s a popular launching point for scuba divers exploring the kelp forests. WELLNESS FOR BODY AND MIND When you’ve taken in the sights and explored to your heart’s content, be sure to leave time for rejuvenation. From spas and meditation retreats to spending time in nature, it’s easy to make wellness a priority when visit-ing the California coast. You can even enjoy food that’s as good for you as it is delicious with a growing focus on sustainability by visiting daily farmers’ markets and fish markets, which provide a bounty of locally sourced produce, fresh meat, seafood and hand-made treas-ures for a truly enriching cultural experience. Heather's favorite pur-chase thus far for her home is an antique workbench from 1910 that is serving as a TV stand; and Karri's is an antique apothecary cabinet from the late 1800's with the original apothecary stickers in some of the drawers. 36 • WESTERN SUBURBS • JULY 2021 • Glancer MagazineWAVES OF FUN I personally have yet to meet someone who does not love jet skiing! It is a thrilling experience being on the open water, driving in the upwards of 35 mph, jumping waves, and cruising with a free-dom like no other. Living so close to the DuPage and Fox Rivers as well as Lake Michigan, one would think jet skiing options would be plentiful; however, there are few places that provide rentals along the shorelines, so we were excited to visit the 31st Street Harbor and see the opportunity avail-able with Chicago Water Sport Rentals. Although you must be 23 years old to rent, a person any age can be a rider on a jet ski if they are accompanied by their parent or legal guardian; so, this makes for a fun family activity as well as an exciting day on the water with friends or a date! Having not been in the city for quite some time since the COVID shutdown, it was awesome to appreciate the southern view of the Chicago Skyline from the water. Dock J was bustling with people at Salerno’s Nautical Playpen, enjoying a bite to eat, a cool drink, and swimming in the pool that appeared to float in the middle of Lake Michigan. Beyond jet skis, Chicago Water Sports also rents kayaks and stand-up paddleboards, with the addition of boats soon to come! The waters in the 31st Street Harbor are calm and peaceful as it is a no-wake zone, so if you are a beginner, this is the perfect opportunity to get comfortable with a jet ski, paddleboard, or kayak; however, if you are an old pro, you are just a short drive to the open waters of Lake Michigan which allows for full throttle and unlimited wave action. This is a fantastic way to spend a summer day close to home with the feeling of being at a waterfront resort. Overview Chicago Water Sports Rentals offers all the summer fun one could ask for with 30 minute and 1 hour jet ski rentals, kayak, boat, and stand-up pad-dleboard rentals. Located next to boat launch and Sa-lerno’s Nautical Playpen, renters are sure to create lasting waterfront memories along the Chicago Skyline! In 2013, when Kathy’s mother passed away, she found letters her mother saved for over 70 years from her dad written between 1942-1945 during WWII. “Dad’s words literally jumped straight into my heart,” says Kathy. “While reading the letters, I was able to get to know my dad, Bernie Kincanon, as a soldier and a boyfriend who was falling in love with the girl back home, Mary Eileen Ruhnke.” Kathy knew she wanted this true love story to be shared and began writing My Darling, 99 Love Letters. The book was pur-posefully launched on December 16th, 2020 in line with some very important dates. During WWII, Kathy’s dad was cap-tured at the Battle of the Bulge on December 16, 1944 and was a prisoner of war until the war ended. Forward 56 years, her dad passed away on the very same date. The book launch was the 20-year anniversary of his passing. Four Seasons Performing Arts Aurora It all began as a simple “Greatest Showman” themed summer con-cert held in a backyard by young performing artists moving from eighth grade to becoming fresh-men at their respective high schools. Although the audience had only about the same amount of people as were in the cast, the show sparked an idea of holding more concerts and productions and forming a performing arts company for teens. When the 2020 quarantine hit, it was a per-fect opportunity to take that free-time and work on creating a real company. Four Seasons Performing Arts came to fruition and a mission was created to increase the number of performing opportuni-ties for aspiring young artists, while simultaneously pro-ducing entertaining shows for their audience base. “In my opinion, the best part about Four Seasons lies not in the work we produce, but in the collaboration behind the scenes,” says Peyton Owen, executive director and co-founder of the company. “We are entirely teen run with 8 high schoolers on the board that all have different fo-cuses. This is a passion project for all of us.” Aside from their original musical, FSPA has never charged for tickets or admission to any of their projects. Raised funds come in purely through the generosity of their audience base and supporters. The majority of the money is donated to different organizations including Kids Matter and Saving Tiny Hearts. A small portion goes back into the company solely to help fund future projects. “To date, we have been able to give 80+ youth performers over 110 performing op-portunities and have do-nated $4000 to the various local charities,” says Peyton. Their current project titled “Artists Collide: a fusion of youth artistry” will be held on July 11 at Island Park in Geneva. It will take dif-ferent types of artistry and combine them into a half-day event, including a live art gallery allowing spec-tators to watch artists cre-ating their work while singers, speakers, poets and instrumentalists per-form. Raffles will be avail-able and donations will be accepted, but the greatest support is simply showing up to enjoy their artists’ talents. For more information on the Four Seasons Performing Arts Company, the Artists Collide event or donating to the organization, visit their website at www.fourseasonsperformingarts.com. FITNESSHEALTH + WELLNESSDR. ALEESHA FISCHER What is Chiropractic? Chiropractic is a healthcare profession that focuses on the spine and other joints of the body, and their connection to the nervous system. The word chiropractic means “to be done by hand.” Chiropractors use adjustments to restore joint function and support the nervous system. Accidents, falls, and postural stress can cause subluxations, which are misaligned verte-brae within the spine from its normal position. Subluxations put pressure on the nerve roots and can decrease function of nerve signals between the body and the brain. Left unresolved, they can lead to chronic con-ditions. The weight of a dime on a spinal nerve can reduce transmission by as much as 60% (Chang Ha Suh, PhD. Spinal Biomechanics Expert).
