Living by the words, Do all the good you can, By all the means you can, In all the ways you can, In all the places you can, At all the times you can, To all the people you can, As long as ever you can is what makes her days better. “We all get out of balance,” Diane says. “It’s not a status to me, it’s a feeling. And being grateful is how I achieve it.” She does this by participating in charitable 5K races, saving stray animals, running fundrais-ers for those in need; additionally bringing her driven, cheerful, and adventurous spirit to each moment, which allows her to be a “day-maker” for anyone in her sphere. Granting time in her daily planner for personal quiet time each morning, an afternoon cat-nap, and regularly scheduled massages are contributing factors to the solace in her life. Diane has a passion to live a long life. “My goal is to live till I’m 100 - Having daily awareness helps with this.”Diane Barajas-Gonzalez

NAPERVILLE–Being able to help and empower people to move in ways that bring them joy is Jeanne’s ultimate mission. “Growing up surrounded by diet culture, I am grateful for the opportunity to encourage people to move and workout as an act of self-love and joy,” she says. “I also love being able to share information about the body that may help some-one overcome or prevent pain and injury.” Though her hours are filled with running her own business, Move with Jeannie; as well as teach-ing at Saha Yoga and NForce Fitness, Jeanne ensures to take time for herself to practice the Ashtanga Lineage to rejuvenate her body through a series of yoga poses, combined with deep, controlled breathing techniques. “There is something about linking breath-to-movement and keeping a focused gaze, or drishti, that seriously settles my mind and brings ease to my body,” Jeanne says. Yoga, personal training, and fitness classes con-sume most of her days; however, taking walks in nature, using self-myofascial release, and en-joying a little sweet treat are also must-dos on the daily schedule. Attending Saha Yoga’s spe-cial events such as gong-bath meditations, mindfulness workshops, and guided meditations are added bonuses each month. Her utmost goal is to cultivate longevity for her-self and others because “The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago, the second best time is now.” –Chinese ProverbJeanne Deloughery Glancer Magazine • JANUARY 2023 • WESTERN SUBURBS • 15

NAPERVILLE–As a young, active, working mother, Kimberly already knows the value of liv-ing in balance and learning from the people around her - taking in their life stories of hope, sorrow and strength - and applying a bit of each to her own journey. As the Wellness Manager for Naperville Park District’s Fort Hill Activity Center, she brings her energetic, compassionate, and fun-loving per-sonality to connect with a community that is striving for the same purpose. Maintaining her own fitness level, while creating long lasting habits, such as reducing sugar, add-ing more vegetables, more cardio, and holding herself accountable via a co-worker and group exercise classes are few of her goals. Using daily tools such as MyFitness Pal and MyZone, and capping off the night with “Sleepy Time Tea” and meditation help balance her day. “My life is full of flavor; I experience as much as I can and share what I am able to with others,” Kimberly says. “I enjoy learning their why and what it means to each person to feel good, and I thrive on trying to meet their expectations”. She loves the many offerings of Fort Hill Activity Center that help her feel strong, capable, con-fident, courageous, and powerful, but is espe-cially drawn to NeuroFlex Fitness and assisting people who are living with neurological con-ditions. The way to get started is to quit talking and begin doing. –Walt Disney Kimberly Monti Glancer Magazine • JANUARY 2023 • WESTERN SUBURBS • 17

LISLE/NAPERVILLE–Mary is the Family Life Specialist at Turning Pointe Autism Foundation in Naperville and recently received the Certified Family Life Educator designation from the Na-tional Council on Family Relations. She works with families and caregivers, offering support, educational seminars, and referrals to address diagnostic, therapeutic behavioral, medical, fi-nancial, legal, and social challenges related to autism. “I love supporting families in our school and in the community,” Mary says. “The autism jour-ney can be incredibly overwhelming at times and I take a lot of pride in the fact that I can help families navigate through. I also love seeing our students be so happy and make incredible pro-gress!” Additionally, belonging to the Professional Allies in Youth and Family Services also allows her to network with different professionals to gain further perspective and opportunities. Mary is empathetic, grounded, and encourag-ing, living by the words of Morgan Harper Nichols, “This is the season she will make beau-tiful things, not perfect things, but honest things that speak to who she is and who she is called to be.” In a world full of pressure to be perfect, Mary al-lows herself enough grace to take breaks when needed by taking daily walks, working out, jour-naling, snuggling her dogs, and of course, or-dering takeout and binging on a television series for the ultimate checks and balance system.Mary ButlerGlancer Magazine • JANUARY 2023 • WESTERN SUBURBS • 19

OSWEGO–With initiative and drive, Melissa joined the Oswego Chamber of Commerce after opening Prairie View Pilates. She loves seeing her students truly understand and connect with their bodies while feeling the empowerment of her own mantra. “I love the quote by Joseph Pilates, Change happens through movement and movement heals, because it's not just about physical heal-ing, but understanding that moving our bodies can help with depression and anxiety. Prior to owning a pilates studio, Melissa at-tended culinary school in 2003-2004 and trav-eled to restaurants of every kind. She learned techniques such as using sous vide to add flavor to food without adding a lot of fat; as well as drinking a cup of bone broth to help provide a soothing sensation in the evening. Melissa has a passion for food, but has learned the art of balance, and wholly believes exercise is a celebration of what your body can do, not a punishment for what you ate. She is honest, kind, and driven and always tries to focus on her energy level and how she is feel-ing IN her body, versus living by a number on the scale. With an ongoing desire to learn, Me-lissa is committed to carving out time for her own Pilates practice and connecting with her men-tors via Zoom a few times a week. LOMBARD–During a routine mammogram and the discovery of stage 1a breast cancer has taught April to give herself permission to put her-self first. “Having cancer has also allowed me to take a good look at my life and rearrange my priorities,” she says. “Accepting that you cannot give ev-erything 100% of your attention, 100% of your time, is truly the only way to have a balanced life.” April is a wife and mother of two active athletic boys (9 and 16), as well as the owner of April Lenz Makeup Artistry offering natural looking makeup services, on location in the Chicagoland area, for weddings, headshots, and photo-shoots. She is also a permanent makeup artist that specializes in eyebrows; however, she is currently on hiatus to remain steadfast to her goals of remaining in NED status (remission), while focusing on having a strong and healthy body supported by a powerful mind and positive mental health. “Hope is stronger than fear,” April adds. “I have no idea who said it, but it has deeply resonated with me during the last eight months.” Adding daily meditation, herbal tea, and salted caramel chocolate round out her balancing act to remain in her happy place. ST. CHARLES–Emily is self admittedly described as a real person with real struggles. “I'm well into my 40s now and have felt the shift of battling weight and fatigue,” she says. “My 2023 goal is to implement small, manageable changes to improve my health. “I'm starting with a food pantry overhaul using local nutritionist DeeDee Mehren's holistic pantry guide.” She’s is funny, nerdy and often tardy, but truly believes that it's not about being the best, it's about doing your best. Laughter, organization and lots of hugs help her get through her days and keeping a weekly menu posted using her Ninja countertop oven + air fryer keeps her ac-countable and efficient. . As the owner of Sage Healing Collective she en-sures to take advantage of her own services such as natural nail care, massages, yoga, med-itation, and the HaloIR Sauna; and re-energizes her mind by making friends and collaborating with local makers to customize products like Sage + Citrus candles by Illuminate Space, Sage Apothecary Oils + Teas from Escentials Aroma, Soaps + Salves from Crybaby Wellness, and Organic Hair Care from Ren Jord. Emily creates further balance combining social-izing with philanthropy as a member of the St. Charles Women's Club and Geneva Women's Club. Blood Sugar Stability Weight, Aging, and Health Optimization Chronically elevated blood glucose (sugar) increases resistance to in-sulin in your body. This is associated with many negative health out-comes and a shorter overall lifespan. It is well known that elevated blood sugar over time causes type 2 diabetes. Additionally, added sugar in-creases the rate of biological aging. Elevated sugar triggers systemic inflammation, this leads to DNA damage which then causes altered ge-netic expression. With altered genetic expression, risk for diseases such as alzheimers and cancer also increase. Balancing your blood sugar on a consistent basis is an excellent strategy for aging well and lowering your long term risk factors. In 2015, the CDC reported that over 30 million Americans have diabetes and 84 million Americans have pre-diabetes. While the typical education from one’s doctor sounds like “you need to eat better and exercise”, this ad-vice is full of little context or actionable tools. If you’re looking to take your health into your own hands and decrease your long term risk factors, there are a variety of lifestyle habits and strategies to help you do so. First and foremost, focus on a diet high in high-quality protein. Animal products that are well sourced offer a rich abundance of nutrients and the high protein content helps to stabilize internal blood sugar levels. Stress is another thing that can elevate blood sugar levels on a consistent basis. Implementing a daily meditation prac-tice will help to keep stress hormones lower which will help support healthy blood sugar levels. Lastly, moving your body regularly is an ex-cellent approach to teaching your body how to properly utilize and burn up glucose as fuel. This does not need to mean strenuous activity, but meeting your daily 10,000 steps can make a world of difference to your longevity and wellness. The most important takeaway here is understanding that you have con-trol over your ability to regulate your blood sugar levels, which means you have an element of control over your long term health and wellness. However, a fun twist to this event has ticketholders in suspense on which restaurant they will be heading to until they arrive at check in. A balloon wall will be set up at Ele-ments at Water Street and diners can throw a dart at the wall to pop a balloon to reveal their restaurant for the evening hidden inside the balloon! Tickets for this unique charity dining ex-perience are $150 per person (sold only in pairs) and do not include tip at check in or at the restaurant. All profits from ticket sales will go to Naperville Com-munity Television, a charity personally selected by Mayor Chirico. “I’m thrilled to take part in an event that will treat attendees to a great meal for a great organization,” Chirico said. “This is an entertaining and unique way for par-ticipants to have the chance to revisit a favorite restaurant or maybe discover a new downtown dining destination for fu-ture nights out. Showcasing our world-class restaurants fits perfectly alongside NCTV17’s work to highlight the local events, people and places that make Naperville a world-class city.” “NCTV17 is thrilled to be part of this in-augural event,” says Elizabeth Spencer, Executive Director of Naperville Com-munity Television. She continues, “As Naperville’s hometown media outlet we think this event is fun, innovative and helps bring even more life to Downtown Naperville. Thank you to Mayor Chirico for choosing NCTV17 as the nonprofit to benefit from this new initiative.” For more information, a list of participat-ing restaurants, and to purchase your tickets, please visit www.Downtown Naperville.com and click on EVENTS.Mayor Steve Chirico, Naperville

CHARLES–Jill Card opened Jeans and a Cute Top after years of working in retail and corporate sales jobs, wearing boring suits, un-comfortable panty hose, and predictable white dress shirts. The name was in-spired by her first date with her husband when she asked, “What should I wear?” and her husband replied: “Jeans and a cute top.” When Jill was getting ready for that first date, she didn’t have a great pair of jeans or a cute top in her closet and had to borrow an outfit from her sister, a flight attendant with a much more fun wardrobe. As she got older, Jill couldn’t find any great jeans for women in their 30s and 40s. Stores catered to teenagers or grandmas. The unflattering ‘Mom’ jeans filled in that age gap. Now, in Jill’s closet, you’ll find about 40 pairs of jeans. She has 8-10 pairs in regular rotation. Her go-to, favorite pair is the Gia from Liverpool—the denim is super soft and keeps its shape. Jeans & A Cute Top is the solution for women who don’t want to look ridiculous trying to dress like their daughters but also refuse to settle for shapeless lounge wear. Jill hand selects every item in the store, going to trade shows looking for style over trend, and finding affordable, beautiful clothes that work for all women, not just size 0 models. You will find Jill working the floor of one of her shops every day—she is committed to changing the world for women one great fitting pair of jeans at a time. www.jeansandacutetop.com Expires 1-31-23Shop Gallery

CHAD’S CHEESECAKE IN LAGRANGE Isn’t it amazing how I can feel so bad, and still look so good?” -Blanche, The Golden Girls Cheesecake fixes everything. Or so it would seem, if you watched any episode of The Golden Girls. Dorothy, Rose, Blanche and So-phia enjoyed many late-night chats over cheesecake. It was a staple, as they discussed drama and solved each other's problems. Did you know there were over 100 cheesecakes consumed by the loveable cast in its 7-year run? There was something familiar and comforting about eating cheesecake together around their kitchen table. Was it the cheesecake? Was it the company? Maybe, it was both. If you now find yourself craving cheesecake, we’ve got just the place! Introducing: Chad’s Cheesecake in La Grange. This family-owned-and-operated bakery was founded in 2006. At that time, they baked for friends and family. Then, in April of 2022, they opened its down-town La Grange shop. The bakery offers: family-size cheesecakes (12 slices - weighing 4 lbs!), cheesecake by the slice or party platters (25 bites - 12 flavors per tray). Its menu consists of 11 year-round flavors - plus, one or two seasonal options each month. Be sure to try the Turtle, Strawberry Shortcake and Key Lime cheesecakes. Everything is made-from-scratch for its retail and wholesale busi-nesses, too. Local food stores and restaurants include: Casey’s (Western Springs and Naperville), Firewater BBQ (Lombard), Al’s Pizzeria (North Riverside and Downers Grove) and Mak’s House (La Grange) … just to name a few. Patten Whispers of a Gypsy NAPERVILLE–After writing several “black operations” special mis-sion and intelligence books that aligned with prior professional work in the intelligence and military community, Naperville author J.T. Patten decided to try something new. Whispers of a Gypsy is a work of dark fiction and horror with strong messages on in-creased issues of racism, bias, the Romani plight, and most prev-alent – anti-Semitism. “I felt the message in this book was very timely to current news coverage and hate crimes,” says Patten. “I am hoping to spur micro changes, awareness and discussion that could occur one reader at a time.” Dark with twists, Patten’s book is a story about Dwight Skinner, a uniquely gifted boy that falls into a dangerous cat-and-mouse game when a tragic event brings a mysterious Romani neighbor out of seclusion and into the Skinner family’s lives. Horrific secrets are uncovered with the arrival of this monstrous protector…searching for something of the past and with a taste for a specific bloodline. The new year is always a great opportunity to create res-olutions setting the stage for a prosperous and fulfilling year. For many that know me, I find solace in active adventures. I’m a big believer in recreational therapy to calm my mind, move my body, and refresh my soul. All of Mom’s Little Black Book adventures have led to smiles, laughter, and an abundance of fond memories. This month is no different. When most are thinking of losing weight, exercise, and healing the soul, discovering Chicago Bicycle Spin Art is the perfect match. Here I was able to release my inner creativity through a makeshift art therapy session, while also releasing endor-phins via the physical movement of pedaling a stationary bike. It was fun selecting my artist name by choosing the last name of a famed artisan, my favorite bike brand, and a cute nick-name. As Goya Kona Bava, I chose a large canvas to begin my journey, then very thoughtfully executed the masterpiece with my 2023 goals in mind. I methodically selected stickers, paints, styles, methods, and speed as I mounted the stationary bike and headed down the road of creation. MOM’S little black book

Refuel for more play in Bean Sprouts Café located on DCM's lower level. The Museum is the perfect place to build strong brains, strong bodies, and strong bonds this winter. Join us for our Community Cares event on Saturday, January 14, 9am – 2pm; children and families can help give back to their community in a fun, interactive way.
