LOVE YOUR AGE Celebrating Our Beauty Ladies, it’s time to celebrate YOU and that means loving everything about yourself – including your age and all that comes with it. As busy as we are, we often find that pampering ourselves is last on our to-do list, but this month we encourage you to make yourself a priority and focus on all that makes you feel better about yourself– inside/out. Loving our age means embracing all that comes with the years that have passed us by. From extra weight and looser skin, to feeling more fatigued and finding stubborn grays that pop up out of nowhere (a daily stressor for me at age 47). All of these things can get us down and leave us feeling not quite like ourselves, wishing our bodies were more like they used to be. But since this is all part of growing old, we should embrace it gracefully and pick ourselves back up. It’s also wonderful to know that in today’s modern age there are many places to help us embrace our age with a lit-tle bit more ease. This is what our pages this month are all about. Thank you for reading and here’s to a year filled with loving your age and embracing all that is YOU!♥ Lindy Kleivo Publishing Director, West Suburban Area www.GlancerMagazine.comTMTABLE OF CONTENTSFebruary 20205 Hello From Glancer Magazine 9 Scene Around Suburbia 7 5 Things to Do 9 Scene Around Suburbia 9 Introducing GlancerDaily.com 11 The Wedding Page 12 COVER: 5 Beauty Influencers 15 West Suburban VIP: Tim Ryan 15 Local Business Spotlights 16 To Give, To Inspire 17 Dining Delights 17 Savory & Sweet Sisters 18 On Trend Downtown Glen Ellyn 20 Kid Stuff 21 Mom’s Little Black Book 22 7 Spectacular HealthyHot Spots PUBLISHER Glancer Magazine, Inc. Their credibility comes from years of struggling themselves with these issues, despite each having a suc-cessful career and seemingly perfect life. Tim’s struggles with heroin landed him in prison for drug-related convictions and although he was released only 14 months later, he used that time wisely to fully engage in a 12-step based program, as well as lay the foundation for a business plan that would ulti-mately seek to help others with addiction issues. “What we need are more programs that are long term for drug cases, people need sub-stance abuse treatment and mental health help not jail,” Tim shares. “We need one to two year very structured programs; we have a pandemic going on and everyone wants to point the finger, but we need more solutions.” Tim and Jennifer now spend their time between Los Angeles and Naperville, currently living at Hotel Arista in Naperville as they search for a new town home and enjoy eating at Lou Malanti’s and Rosebuds and going to the DuPage Children’s Museum. His foun-dation, A Man in Recovery (www.amirf.org) is also based in Naperville where they run family support groups, assist anyone in treatment and speak all over Illinois; thus Nap-erville will always be home. Although Jennifer and Tim speak nationwide to schools, communities, colleges and cor-porations (www.timandjennifer.org), Tim’s personal recovery will always come first and foremost. “You can watch a person’s actions. Less talking and more action. I live in the depths of others peoples’ worlds of addiction from talking to a family, doing interventions, getting people into treatment, running a foundation, speaking nationwide with my wife and work-ing for a substance treatment center www.abetterliferecovery.com,” he says. I still go to 4 -12 step meetings a week for myself, see an outside life coach and keep my circle very small. I only want to be around positive people who make me a better person.” He and Jennifer are currently working on a reality-based docuseries, starting a podcast and Jennifer is back acting as well. 16 • WESTERN SUBURBS• FEBRUARY 2020 • Glancer Magazine HEART HAVEN OUTREACH IN BOLINGBROOK I am a busy mom as many of you are. I have three children, a high-schooler, a middle-schooler and a grade-schooler. Be-sides juggling all their activities and three differ-ent school programs, I am challenged each day with helping them navigate their emotional diffi-culties, relationships and their sense of self-worth. I can only hope that I am making a good impact on them. However, there are many teens in our communities who don’t have that person or role model they can turn to for support and advice, possibly hin-dering their emotional development. Heart Haven OutReach, fondly re-ferred to as H₂O, steps up to the plate by reaching out to the youth of Bolingbrook, Romeoville and the sur-rounding areas to offer a safe-haven for adolescents experiencing emo-tional difficulties and challenges in their lives that might not otherwise have the resources they need to guide them. Conceived in 2004, H₂O offers phys-ical, social, intellectual, emotional and spiritual components of devel-opment in their programs, including support groups, one-on-one mentor-ing, life skills, monthly community service programs, tutoring, and lead-ership building. “This program not only gives our youth in need a place to belong and somewhere to be loved without strings, but also gives opportunities for them to participate and connect in our community,” says Ryan Lawrence, Executive Director of Heart Haven OutReach. “We want youth that feel hopeless to come in and realize there is hope for them, and they have a pur-pose.” Weekly, the organization offers 13 different sup-port and mentor-ing programs and had 436 youth participants at-tend, a number that increases each year. Volunteers are vital to the suc-cess of Heart Haven OutReach, whether it is becoming a mentor, fa-cilitating support groups, tutoring, participating in activities and field trips, or working behind the scenes. As well, there is always a need for help in planning and running events and fundraisers. Guiding the devel-opment of strong character in our teens helps to promote a positive fu-ture for them and a strong com-munity. In 1946 a Michigan couple used a rectangular pan that once held auto parts to nestle their pizza– resulting in an irresistible, thick golden crust that has caramel-ized cheese and bubbled brown edges. Detroit style pizza was born. In 1978 Michigan native Eugene Jetts was on his way to buy a house, but his passion for pizza took over. Instead, he signed a lease on a space, and along with his brother, they opened the first Jet’s Pizza with the goal of hav-ing a better pizza. They use only the best mozzarella, and grate it each day. The dough is also prepared each day by hand and ingredients sliced daily. Add Mamma Jetts’ secret sauce recipe and the result is an amazing pizza! Today, they boast over 400 locations in twenty states– most being independ-ently owned and operated. Mike Genzer, Jose Sanchez and Tom Mazzola share ownership and love for this distinct pizza crust. We met with Sanchez and it was evident he had a love for his customers. His philosophy is basic, keep your customers happy and they will be back for more. A few of our favorite combos are the BBQ, that has BBQ sauce and then topped with bacon, grilled chicken and red onions. The Super Special is topped with pepperoni, ham, mushrooms, onions and green peppers and is a customer favorite. Make sure to add the turbo crust for a flavor boost! Both the deep dish bread and jet’s bread is mozzarella topped with butter, garlic and Romano served with ranch or ma-rinara dipping sauce. The deep dish bread uses the signature Detroit style crust and we couldn’t resist dipping it in the house made ranch. If you are not into the Detroit style crust, Jet’s Pizza also offers thin, hand tossed, New York style, gluten free and cauliflower crusts. The vast menu includes sandwiches, salads and wings. A little something for everyone in the family. This Valentine’s Day Jet’s pizza is serving up heart shaped piz-zas. For a sweet, treat pair that with a fresh baked large chocolate chip cookie or a warm brownie to share. Jet’s motto, life is short. Eat better pizza. Let’s get Jet’s! One of my greatest adventures is hanging out with a young lady that is always up for my next big idea! She shares my spirit of wanting to discover new things and I love her determination and willingness to explore the un-known. We have been kayaking in Wheaton, stand-up paddle boarding in Naperville, hiking in Lemont, and an-chored bullseyes with a cross-bow in Montgomery. We have a long list of local adventures to try; and of course, a couple of bucket list items, like meet-ing The Rock – the one and only Dwayne Johnson, the master of thrill, fun, and excitement! While making this list, she added scuba diving; so, the search began for local options for beginners. We discov-ered Diveheart in Downers Grove. Diveheart works with individuals who have a variety of disabilities, including physical and developmental disabil-ities, vision and hearing impairments, amputations, traumatic brain injuries, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and more. Diveheart seeks to help its par-ticipants “Imagine the Possibilities” in their lives. She is all about not only imagining the possibilities, but making those a reality, which I absolutely love! Registering for scuba diving was easy and FREE! Yes Free! Our first class was at the YMCA in Elgin and our next at Oak Lawn High School. As with all the activities we do, she was a natural. The volunteers at Diveheart provided guidance and sup-port and she dove in hook, line, and sinker! No pun intended! Each month she achieves a new skill with her eye set on seeking certificat-ion. Watching the vol-unteers work with the individuals of varying abilities is an amazing experience. Watching my young friend live a life of no boundaries in priceless! Overview Diveheart is a nonprofit tax-exempt 501(c)(3) organization. The purpose of Diveheart is to provide and support educational scuba diving programs that are open to any child, adult or veteran with a disability. They have discovered the forgiving; weightless wonder of the water provides the perfect gravity-free environment for those who might other-wise struggle on land. Underwater, we’re all equal.
