Glancer Magazine • FEBRUARY 2025 • WESTERN SUBURBS • 11Doug & Mary Therese Hampel At Fort Hill Activity Center NAPERVILLE–Naperville Convention and Visitors Bu-reau has said that Naperville is the Midwest Go-To Des-tination for Pickleball, naming it Pickleball Paradise. Perhaps that’s why Doug and Mary chose to move here in 2019. Doug recently retired after working in the public rela-tions and marketing industry for nearly 40 years, and Mary Therese joined him, leaving behind her career as an executive assistant in the legal and hospitality in-dustry. Now the couple spends their time volunteering at Loaves & Fishes, staying active as members of Community Christian Church, and watching their 5-year-old grandson every Thursday. After 39 years of marriage and raising their son (33) and daughter (30), they have expanded their family with a four legged, 7 year old Boxer; and fill their spare time with pickleball and traveling, especially enjoying hiking National Parks and snorkeling! How did you meet? Through mutual friends at Northern Illinois University Where did you get married? At Mary Therese's childhood church, St. John Fisher, in the Beverly neighborhood Where did you honeymoon? Hawaii If you could sum up your love story in two sentences - what would you say about your journey together? We got married right out of college and have truly grown together as husband and wife, and friends. Over the years, we have always supported each others' careers and worked as partners to raise our children. In addition to family game nights, pickleball and other activities, laughter has been a key part of our strong marriage. If you had a theme song for your relationship, what would it be? Through the Years - Kenny Rogers What was your favorite date night over the years? It’s hard to pick just one. We really enjoy ex-ploring different restaurants and checking out live music venues in the western suburbs. There are so many great options in and around Naperville. How long have you been playing pickleball? What is your current level? We've been playing together for the past three years and are both in-termediate level players. We really enjoy the traditional, recreational side of pickleball. How often do you play? Where do you play? We typically play 2-3 times per week, primarily at Naperville Park Dis-trict’s Fort Hill Activity Center, and have also recently been invited to play at the Picklr. What is the paddle of choice? Paddletek Do you play and go home or is it a social activity - playing with groups and going out with friends afterwards? We really like the social aspect of pickleball. We enjoy catching up with everyone between games and have met up with friends outside of games as well. Since moving here five years ago, we have met some of the nicest people through pickleball. Chris and Carmen danced through their 25 years of marriage while Chris worked for a software company in Chicago and Carmen raised their three children. Now that the kids are all in their 20s, Carmen is pursuing her passion as an interior design student, and the couple is taking pri-vate dance lessons, along with supporting charitable organizations such as Casa Kane County and Kayla’s Hope. How did you meet? On the dance floor at a club in North Pier in Chicago, so I guess dance has always been a part of our journey Where did you get married? Old Town Chapel in Bloomingdale Where did you honeymoon? Cancun If you could sum up your love story in two sentences - what would you say about your journey together? Our love continues to age like fine wine, growing richer and more com-plex with each passing year. Through life's ups and downs, we remain each other's rock, our bond unbreakable and enduring. If you had a theme song for your relationship, what would it be? All of Me by John Legend What famous duo would your friends describe you most like as a couple? Jay and Gloria from Modern Family How long have you been dancing together? We started taking dance classes three years ago when our daughter left for college. Where do you dance? Vargo’s Dance Studio in Geneva. We also dance socially throughout Chicagoland several times per month. Some of our favorite venues are Epiphany Center for the performing arts in Chicago for swing dancing, and Johnny Cabs in Burr Ridge and Bar Louie in Oak Brook for salsa. How often do you dance? We take 5- 6 classes per week as well as private lessons. What is your favorite style of dance? Salsa and Swing Dancing Do you dance and go home or is it a social activity - dance with groups and go out with friends afterwards? For us dance is definitely a social activity. 26 • WESTERN SUBURBS • FEBRUARY 2025 • Glancer Magazine Tarris Marie Empress Creed MIDWEST–Author Tarris Marie is known for crafting gritty, full-throttle narratives with powerful anti-heroines, and her new book, Empress Creed, is no exception. Tarris Marie masterfully transports readers to 1930s Chicago, beautifully weaving the history of the era with the life of a young woman born into the South Side’s seedy underworld who believes she is destined for more. Set against the contrasting landscapes of 1930s America—Chicago’s gritty South Side and New York's glamorous Cotton Club—Empress Creed by Tarris Marie dives into a world of love, crime, and resilience during the Great Depression. Though the nation struggled, African American artistry thrived, and in this duality lies the story’s complex anti-heroine. Dulce Ella Monroe, raised by a blues singer, a prostitute, and a pimp, grew up believing she was destined for more. Her de-sires for freedom clashed with her rise as “the Queen Pin of Chicago,” ruling a criminal empire with cunning elegance. Yet, beneath the powerful facade of the woman now known as Em-press Creed, Dulce still chases a sovereignty free from oppres-sion. Her rule is threatened when rivals emerge, forcing her to turn to Perry “Snipes” Creed—her sharp-shooting ex-lover now working for her enemies. Years ago, Perry, a war-scarred veteran, claimed Dulce’s heart but lost their chance at love. The reunited pair now battles old passions and ongoing dangers, standing on opposite sides of a treacherous game. With their legacies and love at stake, they must decide whether to reignite their bond or destroy each other. The question remains—will love conquer all, or will Chi-cago consume them both? What took me by surprise was discovering that this unforgettable experience, along with access to the All-Inclusive Premium Seat-ing options, is available to everyone for any home game. There’s no need to be a corporate partner or a season ticket holder, and it’s a great activity for all ages, but absolutely perfect for entertaining young adult children! After our time on the court, we made our way to the BMO Club. As we exited the elevator and entered the private space, our eyes were immediately drawn to the exclusive amenities! The buffet was nothing short of spectacular, featuring a wide array of snacks, appetizers, main dishes, a carving station, abundant desserts, and a fully stocked bar.
