DOWNERS GROVE/WOODRIDGE–They met in the high school hallways of Downers Grove North High School, but not as teenagers, as adults, when Nicole, who works in the Building and Grounds Department and as a cheer coach, asked her friend - “who’s that” - when Drew, the Business Teacher and baseball coach crossed her path. “I then proceeded to say - he’s my future hus-band, he just doesn’t know it yet,” Nicole adds. “We didn’t talk for a few years but finally were officially introduced when he lost his keys and needed replacements - which my department was responsible for - and the rest is history!” After dating for 3.5 years, the pair got engaged, and recently married on November 19, 2022 at the Burr Ridge Marriott. They went on a quick honeymoon in New Buffalo, and will enjoy a second honeymoon in Turks & Caicos this summer. Both come from very close knit families, so spend the majority of their free time with them. “It’s nice working together since we both live such busy lives with opposite season coaching schedules, sometimes work is the only place we actually get to see each other,” Nicole shares. “It’s nice knowing if either of us need to talk about something, need an immediate an-swer, or God forbid an emergency situation, we are literally a hop, skip, and a jump away from each other.” They both credit great communication as the key to a successful relationship, as well as wholly trusting the timing of life. COVER STORYWEST CHICAGO/GENEVA/AURORA/ WHEATON–It is said that opposites attract and although that is the case for Jeff and Lynne, at the heart of it all, they discovered they had the same core values and priorities after living as neighbors in an apartment building during their college years at Northern Illinois University. They were married in 1994 in Matteson, IL near Lynne’s hometown of Chicago Heights and were gifted a honeymoon to South Carolina by Jeff’s boss at the time. Six years later they started their family with twins, Ryan and Haley. “We have a love that is based on mutual re-spect,” Lynne says. “Like everyone, we have had our share of challenges, but we have weathered them together, which has made us stronger.” They are the very first franchise owners of uBreakiFix, which is now Asurion Tech & Repair with over 700 stores nationwide. They opened their Geneva store in October 2013 and their Wheaton store in July of 2015. They don’t work together on the day to day operations but draw on each of their strengths as Jeff runs the day-to-day operations, while Lynne oversees the marketing for the two businesses. In addition to this, Jeff is a real estate profes-sional with Keller Williams Inspire in Geneva and Lynne is the Program Coordinator for the Narrative Medicine Program with Advocate Au-rora Health. This busy couple is active in the community while simultaneously creating a blossoming so-cial life living as empty nesters alongside their two cats, named Swatch and Stitch that were adopted during the pandemic. COVER STORYYORKVILLE–The secret ingredient to their 25 year marriage is trust, patience, and maybe a little Busch Light! They met at a club /bar that Mike owned called Attitudes in Aurora when Denise applied to be a cocktail waitress aside from her Ameritech op-erator job. They married at Mooseheart in North Aurora and honeymooned in the Baha-mas. Together, they now own Mike & Denise’s Pizze-ria & Pub in Yorkville (est. 2000 in Aurora, pre-viously Attitudes 1991-2000), The Bristol Tap (2021) in Bristol, and a new location Downtown Yorkville coming spring 2023. “When you find the love of your life, working to-gether doesn’t feel like work, being with each other all the time is easy,” Denise says. “We once heard that if you live and work with your spouse, every year is like being married for 4. Mike and I have worked together for 31 years .. EVERYDAY .. so that’s like 120 years… and we wouldn’t have it any other way.” Their success has not come without struggles from almost going bankrupt, sleeping on couches, living on tips, taking chances that did-n’t always work out, to Mike’s cancer diagnosis. Quitting is not in their vocabulary; however, giv-ing back to the community is. They donate to Yorkville area athletic programs and schools, support Saint Patrick's church, print t-shirts to fundraise for a local ill child, and have helped renovate the baseball field at the Yorkville American Legion, including a score-board and light poles. Owning their own businesses has also allowed them to be fully present in their three children’s lives Jackson (23), Alex (21), and Austin (15).Mike & Denise SiddonGlancer Magazine • FEBRUARY 2023 • WESTERN SUBURBS • 15

COVER STORYNAPERVILLE–Jeff and Janet met as account-ants at Encyclopaedia Britannica in downtown Chicago. They were married in Janet’s home-town at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Streator, IL in 1995 and honeymooned in The United Kingdom. Although they have continued working as full-time CPAs, they have also been active members of the community and supported their children’s organizations throughout the years, beginning with being board members of Hob-son Co-Operative Nursery School, Neuqua Val-ley Theater Parents Association, and Neuqua Valley Orchestra Parents. Janet is also a cur-rent board member for Sharing Connections, which is dedicated to helping individuals and families in crisis providing needed furniture, household items, clothing and more. With a little more time on their hands now that their kids, Jack (23) and Catherine (21) are grown, Jeff and Janet saw a business opportu-nity that connected their passion for serving the community while giving back to the city they love, and purchased Rocky Mountain Choco-late Factory in south Naperville in 2021. “We were in awe of the reach this business has in the community and wanted to ensure it con-tinued,” Janet shares. “We have been espe-cially touched by the regular customers that visit…their stories touch us, and it’s an honor to serve them with great products.” The couple uses their shared sense of humor, love for laughter, and common core values to complement their personal and professional lives while immersing themselves in family, friends, faith, and franchising. COVER STORYGLEN ELLYN–When their Optometry School Class attended a Chicago White Sox Game in 1980, John and Sylvia came as strangers and left as friends after sitting through 15 innings that afternoon. They subsequently married in 1986 at Our Lady of the Wayside in Arlington Heights. Burdened with student loans and the joys of new home ownership, their budget was tight, but escaped to Door County for a quick honey-moon. In 1993, they founded Glen Ellyn Family Eye Care to have flexibility in their schedules to be involved in their children’s active lives, as well as time to immerse themselves in the Glen Ellyn Chamber of Commerce and Rotary Club. “We learn from each other and make each other better doctors,” Sylvia shares. “The one down side however is we may have discussed “eye-balls” at the dinner table too often. For that , I apologize to my long suffering children who had to listen to it.” Clearly, the secret ingredient to their marriage is a good sense of humor, along with mutual re-spect, sharing commonalities, and having their own interests. Outside the Optometric Practice, Sylvia can be found at String Theory yarn store seeking knitting advice; or, as culinary assistant at Marcel’s in Glen Ellyn; while John might be strumming a guitar or fixing something. He’s a “Big Picture” thinker, while she concen-trates on the details. With two successful ca-reers, two thriving adult children, two grandchildren, this couple has found that two heads are better than one and working together is the key to success. The Spice Bar hosts a rotating assortment of four different spices to taste test each month and customers can also expect to be walked through the origins of each spice, along with any fun facts, recipe and pairing suggestions, or differences they might note amongst the varieties. “Greater Chicago continues to be one of our most important markets,” says Allyson Lewis, CEO at The Spice House. “And our stores have proven extremely effective with showcasing first hand the unrivaled quality and selection we are known for. When it came time to launch our first location in the Western Suburbs, it was a no-brainer that it would be in Naperville.” Aromas and color fill the store, allowing the senses to wander in exploration. www.thespicehouse.com Introduce Us to a Business or Organization that’s New In Town editorial@glancermagazine.comNEW IN TOWNGlancer Magazine • FEBRUARY 2023 • WESTERN SUBURBS • 43

Shop GalleryTWO LOCAL BOUTIQUES FEATURING LIVERPOOL’S HOTTEST STYLES WHEATON & ST. CHARLES–Jill Card opened Jeans and a Cute Top after years of working in retail and corporate sales jobs, wearing boring suits, un-comfortable panty hose, and predictable white dress shirts. The name was in-spired by her first date with her husband when she asked, “What should I wear?” and her husband replied: “Jeans and a cute top.” When Jill was getting ready for that first date, she didn’t have a great pair of jeans or a cute top in her closet and had to borrow an outfit from her sister, a flight attendant with a much more fun wardrobe. As she got older, Jill couldn’t find any great jeans for women in their 30s and 40s. Stores catered to teenagers or grandmas. The unflattering ‘Mom’ jeans filled in that age gap. Now, in Jill’s closet, you’ll find about 40 pairs of jeans. She has 8-10 pairs in regular rotation. Her go-to, favorite pair is the Gia from Liverpool—the denim is super soft and keeps its shape. Jeans & A Cute Top is the solution for women who don’t want to look ridiculous trying to dress like their daughters but also refuse to settle for shapeless lounge wear. Jill hand selects every item in the store, going to trade shows looking for style over trend, and finding affordable, beautiful clothes that work for all women, not just size 0 models. You will find Jill working the floor of one of her shops every day—she is committed to changing the world for women one great fitting pair of jeans at a time. www.jeansandacutetop.com Expires 2-28-2356 • WESTERN SUBURBS • FEBRUARY 2023 • Glancer Magazine

I WANT CANDY! CLARENDON HILLS–What is the fascination with candy? For some, it could be their longest-standing relationship. Candy (and sugar) are fondly linked to positive memories - life celebrations, holidays and impulse check-out-line-purchases. It is a symbol of happiness. Whe-never and wherever the occasion, it leads to joy. And there is a good reason; our bodies naturally release the feel-good hormone (dopa-min) when we eat sugar. In moderation, candy has been linked to a variety of health benefits too - it increases energy, helps mood, and reduces stress and anxiety. If you're on the hunt to satisfy that sweet tooth, we’ve got just the place for you. Introducing: I Want Candy! in Clarendon Hills. I Want Candy! opened its doors on May 4, 2018. They are known in-ternationally for its luxury lollipops. That’s right - luxury. These small-batch, artisanal lollipops are handmade - carefully designed, poured, wrapped and packaged in its Clarendon Hills commercial kitchen. It's a process they’ve coined as ‘concept-to-confection’. In fact, clients have the opportunity to create their own lollipop designs, too. Inside the shop you will find a unique assortment of shaped, layered, flavored and image lollipops. However, you will also find: cotton candy, CrispyCake marshmallow rice treats, caramels, gummies, and chocolates. Its most popular treats, include: milk chocolate-cov-ered oreos, giant peanut-butter cups, cotton candy, gummi bears and (of course!) lollipops. IWC products can be found at the Adler Plan-etarium and The Field Museum in Chicago, too. This one-of-a-kind shop is sure to have you crushing this Valentine’s Day season. Meet Tammey Morris of Batavia– EMT, Local Mom & So Much More! AURORA–Tammey was sick as a teenager and felt blessed to be surrounded by those who helped support her along the way. She always knew she wanted to give back some-how, so when she stumbled on an Emer-gency Medical Technician (EMT) Class in College, it was the perfect launch to a career she fell in love with as a first responder. In 1995, she tested for a professional full-time Firefighter/Paramedic position at the City of Naperville and proceeded to work and even-tually raise her two children as a single mom. In January 2021, Tammey further challenged the promotional exam of Lieutenant, scoring number one out of 25 candidates, catapulting to her current title, Lieutenant of EMS. As a 5’3”, 125 lb. female in a male dominant occupation, odds were against Tammey; however, she pursued everyday with pos-itivity. “If you try and fail, that does not make you a failure but a trier. If you never try, that is what makes you a failure,” she adds. “It takes courage and determination, but you might surprise yourself at what you really are capable of. Hard work does not see gender, size, age, color, or ethnicity.” This has paid off for Tammey as she re-cently earned the George Winckler Award honoring her for exemplifying integrity, honesty, dedication, kindness, and heart. “I felt humbled. I have been working for over four years on developing a culture change, procedures and policies for the Naperville Fire Department with the goal of bringing resiliency by promoting a healthy, positive and aggressive approach to heal-ing properly after significant incidents and/or high stress incidents firefighters en-dure daily either professionally or per-sonally.” Tammey has garnered many other acco-lades over her 30 year career including Naperville Exchange Club: Firefighter of the Year 2002, Naperville Board of Fire and Police Commissioners: The Commissioner’s Award 2019, and Naperville Fire Department and Naperville Police Department: Medal of Valor 2019. This inspiring woman still finds time to travel, workout, attend concerts, and spend time with family and friends. She is also ac-tively pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Fire Service Administration and Psychology.WOMEN INSPIRED

Blood Sugar Stability Weight, Aging, and Health Optimization Chronically elevated blood glucose (sugar) increases resistance to in-sulin in your body. This is associated with many negative health out-comes and a shorter overall lifespan. It is well known that elevated blood sugar over time causes type 2 diabetes. Additionally, added sugar in-creases the rate of biological aging. Elevated sugar triggers systemic inflammation, this leads to DNA damage which then causes altered ge-netic expression. With altered genetic expression, risk for diseases such as alzheimers and cancer also increase. Balancing your blood sugar on a consistent basis is an excellent strategy for aging well and lowering your long term risk factors. In 2015, the CDC reported that over 30 million Americans have diabetes and 84 million Americans have pre-diabetes. While the typical education from one’s doctor sounds like “you need to eat better and exercise”, this ad-vice is full of little context or actionable tools. If you’re looking to take your health into your own hands and decrease your long term risk factors, there are a variety of lifestyle habits and strategies to help you do so. First and foremost, focus on a diet high in high-quality protein. Animal products that are well sourced offer a rich abundance of nutrients and the high protein content helps to stabilize internal blood sugar levels. Stress is another thing that can elevate blood sugar levels on a consistent basis. Implementing a daily meditation prac-tice will help to keep stress hormones lower which will help support healthy blood sugar levels. Lastly, moving your body regularly is an ex-cellent approach to teaching your body how to properly utilize and burn up glucose as fuel. This does not need to mean strenuous activity, but meeting your daily 10,000 steps can make a world of difference to your longevity and wellness. The most important takeaway here is understanding that you have con-trol over your ability to regulate your blood sugar levels, which means you have an element of control over your long term health and wellness. To prepare, Greg has planned cyclocross/gravel cycling rides including Rough Road 100, Barry Roubaix, and the Horribly Hilly; while Buffy will begin bike commuting the 52 miles RT to work. Additionally, they both workout at 5 a.m., a few days a week at H4 Training in Wheaton. Weightlifting with TRX and HIIT are central to their weekly plan and they hold each other ac-countable to clean eating by weekly meal planning which al-ways allows for a little dark chocolate, red wine, and blue cheese! “H4 does a great job offering challenges to improve habits - eating, working out, stretching…” Buffy says. “Having some-one alongside you is a great help.” Making their health a priority is balanced with serving on the Equality Dream Team Board, Boy Scouts of America Board, Pathway to Adventure Council; as well as being active members of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Geneva. Relax and Breathe! The month of February always makes me think of those I love the most. My daughter’s stole my heart the day they were born and spending quality time with them is always my favorite thing to do! We stole a “day at the beach” to reconnect and rejuvenate. Sinking our toes in the pebbled oasis of the HaloTherapy room at Breathe Salt Therapy was just the ticket to force us to relax and go off the grid for an hour. We not only had some good laughs and great conversation with friends, we were also able to take advantage of the natural advantages of dry salt therapy during the winter months that fight off things like Bronchitis, Al-lergies, Sinusitis, Pneumonia and the like, while also reaping the benefits of skirting skin conditions such as Eczema, Der-matitis, Acne, Wrinkles, and Signs of Aging Skin. by Mindy Kyle Photos SubmittedLucy Dallman Little Girls, Little Girls GLEN ELLYN–Long time Glen Ellyn school teacher Lucy Dallman had the idea to create a series of books with a combination of music, artwork and meaningful messages for a wide range of au-diences. She rounded up her collaborators, Billy Van Duzor (music) and Katherine Trumbull Fimreite (artist) to develop their first book, Little Girls, Little Girls. “This book was created out of love and a desire to leave a message for my grand girls and Billy’s daughters,” says Lucy. “It evolved into an anthem for girls and women of all ages.” Little Girls, Little Girls is a beautiful picture book based on an orig-inal song of the same title. The illustrations within the book are watercolor landscapes which depict the lyrics of the song. The book includes a QR code directing readers to a website where the song can be heard. The final pages of the book contain the piano and guitar music for the song. The lyrics remind girls and women that their stories are important, and it is imperative for them to be heard. Lucy and her team decided to sell their book exclusively through Independent Bookstores. Local stores include: Anderson’s in Naperville, The Bookstore in Glen Ellyn, Town House Books in St. Charles and Prairie Path Books in Wheaton. Little Girls, Little Girls was one of the top selling children’s books of 2022 at both Ander-son’s and The Bookstore. LITERAARRYYlocalKNOW A LOCAL AUTHOR?  We’d Love to Meet Them!
