of Kaneland Allergy Asthma Center in North Aurora Through her experiences in her medical career she has designed an innovative and holistic treatment process for food allergies Combining rich history and current scientific research Dr Bajowala walks her readers through this process in her book The Food Allergy Fix An Integrative and Evidence Based Approach to Food Allergen Desensitization She was inspired to write the book because she wanted to help families understand the immune system and the potential of this treatment I want to reveal to families of children with food allergies that TRIBUTE DEDICATED TO MAYOR PRADEL Last month Naperville s biggest cheerleader passed away at the age of 80 just one day before what would have been his 81st birthday Mayor Emeritus A George Pradel died peacefully at 9 30am on September 4 The family released a statement about his passing on the website they created to keep residents updated after he recently entered hospice care The site address is on the varsity soccer team Avery attends The Chicago Academy for the Performing Arts in the city and is actively involved with theater and stage Peyton is 15 and also attends Benet Academy is on the cheerleading squad and involved with theater His stepdaughter Meghan lives in Traverse City with sights set on a return to Chicago soon Ferguson s is just Eric to his neighbors and he loves that His profession is rarely discussed I end up taking the garbage out to the curb just like everyone else To most Ferguson appears a natural entertainer but he is admittedly fairly quiet and introverted outside the radio booth When you talk for a living it s nice in your personal time to hear others handle the speaking He is a father a popular radio host a quiet man and he loves just being another COVER STORY The Feltes Family of Sonny Acres WEST CHICAGO Sonny Acres farm in West Chicago has been in Tom Feltes s family since his great grandparents settled on the property in 1883 Tom s mom eventually gifted the farm to her nine children but the business name was officially changed to Sonny Acres when her seventh son was born into the family The farm is now operated and managed by Tom son 6 and his wife Ellyn Feltes and Tom s brother Jim Feltes All of them including Tom and Ellyn s three adult children and two oldest grandchildren look forward to the fall season and working at their Fall Festival It s our busiest time of the year says Ellyn and we get excited when the season comes around We start preparing early in the year ordering merchandise and planning activities Besides the piles of pumpkins and specialty squashes and gourds visitors will find a variety of Halloween displays and attractions including hayrides pony rides camel rides a Haunted Barn a Spooky Shed amusement rides a costume shop and a farm market A unique attraction that they love putting together for their guests is the Haunted Wagon Ride on the weekends that takes you through five acres of woods with live characters to give a thrill I love having people tell me that they came to Sonny Acres as a child and are now bringing their children to experience the fun says Ellyn It s fun for their family and for mine Mindy Kyle FALL by Mindy Kyle Photos by Mike Mantucca Unless Otherwise Submitted by Mindy Kyle Photos by Mike Mantucca Unless Submitted family time Adison Glick of Naper Settlement The Keller Family of Keller s Farmstand NAPERVILLE This is Adison Glick s fourth season as Special Events Coordinator for Naper Settlement Coming from a family that joyously celebrates the coming of fall and Halloween Adison brings a certain excitement to organizing and producing Naper Settlement s longstanding fall events Oktoberfest and All Hallow s Eve Every year his mother transforms her entire house into a bouquet of red orange and brown fall decorations He seems to have inherited her passion as he decorates on a larger scale to create a creepy spooky haunted wonderland during All Hallow s Eve OSWEGO Frank Keller s favorite fall family tradition would undoubtedly be readying their family farm and orchard for the public harvest festivities Keller s Farmstand and Orchard out of Oswego is an all family affair Frank and his wife Teresia and their three children Elin 19 Greta 16 and Frank Gus 13 all work together to be ready for opening day Frank s siblings are also integral to the farm s success with his sister Martha managing their Fall Event his brother Marty running the bakery with Teresia where apple cider donuts are made and his sister Laura working with their social media My favorite part of fall are the campfires says Adison My family loves to sit around a fire while we cook pick instruments sing songs and laugh To incorporate that atmosphere at All Hallow s Eve a giant campfire sits in the center of the numerous haunted houses and displays An array of delicious fall foods are available for attendees to enjoy by the fire while watching stage entertainment Keller s Farmstand has changed locations a few times but has been in the area since 1852 and growing pumpkins since the early 1900 s The popular family destination offers apple picking from over 2 000 trees of 15 varieties pumpkin picking fun activities for kids and a ten acre corn maze As a musician Adison looks forward to the Oompa and Polka music at the earlier Oktoberfest to bolster his festive spirit Since I started working at Naper Settlement says Adison my entire family comes in from Indiana every year to celebrate with me at Oktoberfest They all love the German food and drinks 16 Glancer Magazine OCTOBER 2018 DUPAGE COUNTY After living 40 years in Naperville before moving the farm to Oswego Frank finds the quiet in the country relaxing We begin working on the Fall season as early as June when we start planting pumpkins and cutting our corn maze says Frank It s a crazy pace but we love working together and I m very proud of all the work my kids have done

M O N T H LY CO LU M N To Give To Inspire THE ANNIE LEGERE FOUNDATION OF ELMHURST The Halloween season is approaching and if your kids are like my kids they are creating intricate strategies to collect as much candy as possible in one night My friends who have children with food allergies tell me of the tedious job they have of sorting through piles and removing potential dangers These everincreasing food allergies are real can be life threatening and can also pop up unexpectedly Take it from Shelly LeGere whose thirteen year old daughter Annie had no known allergies and had a fatal anaphylactic reaction at a friend s sleepover When I found out that it was possible that Annie s life could have been saved if the police officer first responder had been carrying an epinephrine auto injector I knew I needed to do something to change that law says Shelly She created The Annie LeGere Foundation ALF and her work began In November 2015 Shelly met with Illinois State Senator and Elmhurst resident Chris Nybo to discuss ways to pass a law to have police officers carry the auto injectors She went to Springfield several times with friends family and ALF board members In August 2016 The Annie LeGere Law was passed The DuPage County Sheriff s Office was the first to implement the law but because of a missing liability clause local municipalities were unable to follow More trips to Springfield and the law was amended and signed July 2018 by Governor Bruce Rauner in Annie s hometown of Elmhurst The Elmhurst police officers became the first municipality to carry epinephrine auto injectors I believed that putting this lifesaving medicine in the hands of our deputies giving them one more tool to help save a life was essential to bolstering our mission to serve and protect the citizens of DuPage County says Sheriff John Zaruba of the DuPage County Sherriff s Office All of their patrol deputies carry a medical backpack in their squads with a child EpiPen and an adult EpiPen Now ALF works tirelessly to spread awareness at school assemblies to provide needed information about allergies food allergy bullying and the signs and symptoms of anaphylactic shock As well they hold many fundraisers to continue to raise funds to aid with the cost of epinephrine auto injectors to municipalities and individuals in need Their hope for the future is to pass The Annie LeGere Law nationwide For more information on how you can become involved or donate to The Annie LeGere Foundation please visit them at www amazingannie org Mindy s October Giving Inspiration Send a gratitude email to someone who deserves more recognition ABOUT THE WRITER Mindy Kyle is the owner of Be Inspired Studios and is passionate about helping people discover what brings them joy and to live a full healthy and happy life She has her Masters in Fine Arts degree in creative writing from DePaul University and lives in Naperville with her husband three children and the cutest dog in the land Glancer Magazine OCTOBER 2018 DUPAGE COUNTY 17

IT S MOM TIME G U E S T B LO G G E R MO N T H L Y C O L UMN Mom s Little Black Book SANDBOXES IN OCTOBER We are already itching for our summer park playtime and winter hasn t even begun As much as I love doing adventures with my girls they were a bit old for this one so I brought along my 21 month old nephew He was awe struck as soon as we walked in the doors He didn t know which way to turn there were bright colors toys balls slides sand and a carousel all within his sightline Yes I did just say sand Kiddy Club Playground Sandbox is one of Chicago s largest indoor silica free sandboxes on one swing and his wonderful aunt supporting him we giggled as we made our way around the moving circle The infant and toddler area were his perfect size There is the coolest water box feature where you can walk on water without getting wet The texture and lighting were so unique When your nephew is leaving in a full blown tantrum because he doesn t want the fun to stop it s the perfect sign of a
