JACK H MARSTON II MELANOMA FUND GLEN ELLYN AH YES Summer is finally here and tickling our desires to get out into the sunshine and soak up those rays After the cold Chicago months does anything sound better However as we prepare for all our fun in the sun we still need to be aware of the dangers that lurk in too much sun exposure Besides sunburns and blisters melanoma is a true villain The incidence of melanoma is increasing at an alarming rate and is a threat to both adults and children yet research toward better treatment and a cure remains underfunded The Jack H Marston II Melanoma Fund was established in 2004 when melanoma took the life of devoted family man and dedicated children s coach Jack H Marston II at the age of 47 I did not want another family to go through what we experienced says Sharon Marston Jack s widowed wife and the President and Founder of the organization When Jack was fighting there was not much support for melanoma patients not anymore Over the past fifteen years Jack s Fund has helped increase awareness and improve the treatments for this very complex cancer Jack was an accomplished athlete and four time Chicago Marathon participant so it made sense to fundraise around running Jack s Fund has organized for 15 years the Annual This Run s for Jack 5K Run Walk in October at Ackerman Park in Glen Ellyn where many families attend to memorialize a loved one lost to the disease There also have been several marathon teams that were formed over the years in support of Jack s Fund and participated in the C h i c a g o Marathon the New York City Marathon the Marine Corps Marathon and many more The organization is also highly involved in free skin screening throughout the community and attends many of the high school health and wellness fairs If you are runner the 5K walk run is a fun race to participate in while giving back to the cause If you are a marathon runner or want to be you can choose to be on one of their marathon teams If you are not a runner and would still like to support Jack s Fund they always need volunteers at the races and the fairs You can find out more information on how to contact them at www jacksfund org Mindy H LY CO LU M N To Give To Inspire The Alive Center a nd The St Charles Underground Teen Center Having a teenager in the house has many challenges Not only are we navigating the growing independence and the increased academic challenges but also the new communication skills or lack thereof Our teenagers are under a lot of pressure these days and sometimes all they need is a place to go that s not their home and people to talk to that are not their parents Teen Centers like The Alive Center in Naperville and the St Charles STC Underground Teen Center understand these needs and have created spaces and free programming to cater to their local tweens and teens We offer various programs for the teens within the St Charles boundaries says Darby Beasley Teen Program and Center Director of STC Underground We have study nights exam crams computer lab and then fun table games and video game systems for the teens to hang out and socialize The center is operated by the St Charles Park District and is open Tuesday through Saturday They receive grants and donations from local organization to help offset programming costs One of the grant programs they worked on with Kane County had teens research and present to the Board of Directors of the Park District to make a motion to have all tobacco use banned in STC parks The motion passed and the ordinance was set in place The Alive Center is a one of a kind teen center in Naperville whose mission is to be a teen led teen driven center focused on empowering the youth of today to become impassioned resilient leaders of tomorrow The older teens lead their programs for the younger teens and tweens to help make the experience more relatable It is a powerful peer model of teens helping teens says Kandice Henning President of the Alive Center Along with mentoring and free tutoring we have workshops on a variety of topics such as leadership career development healthy cooking art and music cyber safety STEM and much more The Alive Center has free drop in hours for 6th and 12th grade kids after school and over the summer In both centers teens can go to a relaxed facility and feel fully supported in discovering who they are Both GROVE As a child Sue loved cleaning the house and keeping her room neat In high school and college class notes were well laid out and she used a calendar to plan assignments As she moved to the corporate world and began working at a Fortune 500 company the managers held a Clean Off Your Desk Day I was puzzled I didn t understand why this special day was necessary since my desk was always clean Sue says That day she discovered her true passion and proceeded to open her own business From Piles to Smiles in 2000 Getting started was the hardest part as she was working full time at a well paying job and her husband was just getting started in his own business They also had two children in private school The numbers indicated that the timing wasn t right for both to venture out on their own so Sue started her business while also working full time After about 6 months of working two jobs she took the plunge and left her full time job Organizing wasn t as well known back in 2000 as it MO N T H L Y C O L UM N Mom s Little Black Book BEAR DOWN IN HISTORY With June approaching Mom s Little Black Book is always thinking of all the dads and fun activities they too would enjoy this time of year Since football seems to be a common interest amongst most men we headed to check out the tours at Soldier Field which included the South Courtyard the Doughboy Statue the Visitor s Locker Room a Skyline Suite the Colonnades and yes the Field That was truly the most exciting part of the tour actually being on the field My kids took umpteen pictures and it most definitely was SnapChat worthy material inclusive with its own GeoFilter We even saw the secret place where the players park their cars on game days The journey also included a historical video that takes you back to the years of Soldier Field s Golden Age Now let s face it using words like historical video can be awfully frightening for a teenager but as it turns out the information was so engaging even they left saying wow I didn t know that Without giving it all away did you know Martin Luther King Jr made history in 1964 in front of 70 000 at Soldier Field making it a key battle ground in the civil rights struggle Having lived in Chicago my entire life I loved seeing the old meet new Seeing the original seats and columns still outside the new structure was pretty cool I also had no idea the field was dedicated to the real heroes of our country and served a purpose so much greater than football memorial stadium Pretty remarkable Overview Come experience both the historic and modern day journey of Soldier Field dedicated to the men and women of the armed services and home of the Chicago Bears Soldier Field is also host to world class concerts college football international soccer and rugby along with many other timeless events Enjoy a behind the scenes 90 minute walking tour that is open to all ages is wheel chair and stroller accessible and available on various weekdays Soldier Field Tour 1410 S Passports SPREADING JOY IN JAMAICA Last summer my friend Gabi told me about an amazing charity called Pack for A Purpose If you ve followed previous posts you ve read all about this incredible organization I loved the idea of taking action to positively impact the lives of students globally so beginning a book drive was the perfect idea I would have never imagined in a million years that we d collect 7 000 books and that I d have the opportunity to actually visit the recipients of our donations This trip to Jamaica has changed my life forever It is so true that when you give you receive so much more in return On March 27th 2018 my Mom and I headed for Ochos Rios Primary School to visit the students teachers and staff where the books were donated I had no idea what to expect and after our two hour drive from Montego Bay we were immediately greeted with hundreds of smiles joy laughter kindness gratitude and friendship Upon arrival I was confused at first because it seemed as though there was a huge party going on at the school I thought to myself that if this is their typical daily recess I was immediately moving to Jamaica to attend school there permanently We were informed that the school was having its yearly community carnival fundraiser How lucky that we were visiting on this day It was a blast Three students had prepared a traditional African dance that they performed for us It was incredibly beautiful and so much fun to watch They even tried to teach me a few parts of the dance You can check out these videos on our blog Ochos Rios Primary has about 1 500 students and only around 10 desk top computers for everyone to share They are not only in great need of technology but could use any basic school supplies such as books pencils pens rulers markers play dough you name it If you d like to make a donation please contact me at pedis n passports gmail com I will be continuing to send as many materials and supplies as possible and will certainly visit the school again the next time we are in Jamaica They are very excited to have a brand new Special Education Department and can use any supplies you d be willing to donate When I think of my own school district here in Naperville I realize what a privilege it is to grow up with a great education More importantly it is everyone s humanitarian responsibility to give back as much as possible While I certainly can t afford to buy laptops for all of the students in Jamaica I can be an ambassador to the school and reach out as much as possible to bring forth awareness I m hoping perhaps local school districts here in our area will join me in my mission to change the lives of the students in Ochos Rios Thank you so much for all who have already donated You ve touched so many lives FAMILY TIME BY A M A N D A P A V LE T I C E D I T O R I A L I N T E R N INTRODUCING WEST SUBURBAN DR MOM Doctor Catherine Rhim DMD Dr Mom I then pick up the girls from school and have to get them to their activities Gymnastics piano lessons horse lessons tennis Squeezing in dinner between their activities I don t have time to cook every day most of the time we have to be quick Doctor Rhim explained How do they do it Day after day Many moms are often referred to as super moms being able to take on multiple responsibilities at once and conquering all just as superhero s do It is mind boggling to others observing their lifestyle confusing as to how they can handle work family friends personal life and more all at once It is even more impressive to have one of the most competitive demanding occupations as a doctor There are multiple different jobs in the doctor field DMD or Doctor of Dental Medicine is one of the most common They have numerous responsibilities while on the job A few include promoting oral health diagnosing Photo Submitted oral diseases creating treatment plans to maintain or restore oral health interpreting x rays and diagnostic tests monitoring growth and development of the teeth and jaws and performing surgical procedures on the teeth bone and soft tissues of the oral cavity While handling all of those responsibilities and more as a dentist it is truly remarkable to be a mother as well It takes a special person to be handle both titles doctor and mom I spoke with Doctor Catherine Rhim DMD of Valley View Dental in Naperville about the lifestyle of handling both obligations The word hectic seemed to come up a lot in the conversation Doctor Rhim has two daughters ages 6 and 12 While her husband is often out of town recently getting a new puppy demanding job and active children Doctor Rhim explained I feel like I can t breathe like I m always out of breath Doctor Rhim grew up in a family of physicians and felt as if she was always geared towards the health field originally wanting to be a pediatrician as a girl As a sophomore in college she got a job as a dental assistant in Chinatown It opened up my eyes to dentistry at that time I found it artistic I was always interested in art as young girl Doctor Rhim said When asked why she ended up choosing dentistry Doctor Rhim referred back to the artistic aspect that she admired and concluded with I liked that it combined the health profession and helping people While Doctor Rhim has a great love for her profession and an even bigger love for her children there is challenges that come about from handling the two of them together I feel bad for my younger daughter sometimes because she has classmates that their mothers don t work She wonders why I do but just doesn t quite understand it yet That s why I work part time I want to be involved in extra curricular and other things Doctor Rhim said Watching her daughters grow up time is already flying by for Doctor Rhim You want to be able to be there when they re growing It only happens once and it goes fast Doctor Rhim said with love for her girls Doctor Rhim is the definition of Dr Mom conquering the doctor and mother lifestyle with immense dedication and passion for both her profession and daughters Doctor Rhim s typical day varies by the difference of working or not working at VVD on Tuesday Thursday Friday and every other Saturday I get up make the girls lunches prepare backpacks drop them off at school at different times then get myself ready take the dog out and leave for work Doctor Rhim said while describing a typical morning for her She said that she feels like she can kind of breath once getting to work but then has to switch gears from mother to dentist focusing on the intense challenges of the job You have to make you re careful with each patient You don t want to work on the wrong tooth Doctor Rhim joked Valley View Dental has three locations Naperville Romeoville and Montgomery With fifteen doctors in total including Doctor Catherine Rhim they are a full service dental practice As a family dentist they serve both children and adults New patients are always welcome Visit their website for their new patient special www vvdental com As most working mothers do Doctor Rhim does have a nanny to help her out Her nanny is responsible for picking up the girls from school feeding them dinner and watching over them at home until Doctor Rhim arrives home from work I help the girls finish homework or whatever else then I am usually scrambling to get them to bed by a decent hour Doctor Rhim said And then we start it all over again the next day she said with exhaustion in her voice ABOUT THE WRITER On days off Doctor Rhim described her days as more relaxed but still fastpaced Once she drops the girls off at school she says her days seem to fly by I am constantly on the go Doctor Rhim added While her girls are in school she uses that time to grocery shop do laundry clean the house etc Amanda Pavletic of Naperville is an incoming senior at Grand Valley State University in Allendale Michigan where she is studying Health Communications hoping to follow her dreams of
