Tanya Davis WHEATON–Tanya Davis, Co-Founder of the William & Mary Davis Foun-dation, is a shining example of leadership and compassion driven by pur-pose. Raised in the historic Black community of Shiloh in Asheville, NC, Tanya witnessed the strength of perseverance early on. Her mother worked tirelessly in a factory to support her family, instilling in Tanya a commitment to hard work and service. The foundation she co-created with her husband, Steve, honors his parents, William and Mary Davis, who also exemplified resilience by working hard to provide for their family. Through the William & Mary Davis Foundation, Tanya dedicates herself to empowering underrepresented communities. One standout initiative, "A Purpose by Design," offers young women aged 13–17 a life-changing op-portunity to explore career paths, financial literacy, and mentorship along-side servant leaders from across the country. Remarkably, under Tanya's guidance, four young ladies have taken confident steps toward financial in-dependence by opening ROTH IRAs before heading off to college. Furthering her mission, Tanya's family also founded The Tuskegee Next Foundation, which has enabled seventy-six young adults to earn pilot's li-censes, breaking barriers in the aviation industry. She also has a book com-ing out in December entitled, Threads: Tapestry of Life in the Black Community of Shiloh and Beyond. Her advice to step outside comfort zones and connect with diverse per-spectives reflects her heartfelt belief in learning from others. For Tanya Davis, community service isn’t just work—it’s a way of life. -Lindy Kleivo, Photos by Ruta Drulia Glancer Magazine • DECEMBER 2024 • WESTERN SUBURBS • 21

Nikki Osterloh GENEVA–Finding a cause that resonates with you is the best motivator to making a positive impact in your community, and for Nikki that was ignited through participation in an efferves-cent church youth group, laying the foundation for a career in volunteer management as an adult. Now in her third year as the Manager of Volunteer Engage-ment at Marklund in Geneva, one of her main goals is to ex-pand the volunteer base and foster connections that help others understand the power of inclusion, teaching the younger generation that individuals with disabilities have the same passions and interests as everyone else. Over the years, Nikki has had the privilege of volunteering with Hesed House, Feed My Starving Children, and CASA Kendall County, as well as participating in a mission trip to El Salvador. She has played a key role in raising hundreds of thousands of dollars for fundraising initiatives at CASA Kendall County, recruited and trained hundreds of dedicated volunteers, and managed the Marklund Community Giving Tree Gift Drive each holiday season. Nikki celebrates every small victory and always remembers that even the tiniest actions, when done with intention, can create a lasting difference, not only in your life but in the lives of those you’re serving. -Kristen Kucharski, Photos Submitted Glancer Magazine • DECEMBER 2024 • WESTERN SUBURBS • 23

Dr. Meenakshi Balakrishnan DOWNERS GROVE–Dr. Balakrishnan’s volunteer path has been influenced by her journey as a business owner, a mother, an orthodontist, and an active member of the Downers Grove and Hinsdale communities. Finding a work-home balance that matched her goals was Dr. Balakrishnan’s biggest challenge. As a mom, it became apparent in 2020 that mental health is paramount, which ignited her passion to teach mindfulness and meditation locally and nationally. “First learn to love yourself and take care of yourself,” she says. “This unleashes your creative ability and only then can you take care of others. Meditation takes you into this vast peaceful inside world that has everything you need to be your best self everyday.” As the owner of Downers Grove Orthodontics for the past 18 years, Dr. Balakrishnan makes sure to attend seminars bringing the latest technology to her practice, em-bracing high standards, while also giving back by teaching orthodontic and dental residents at the University of Illinois-Chicago Dental School. She is Board-Certified and a member of Omicron Kappa Upsilon, the American Association of Orthodon-tists, and the Midwest Society of Orthodontists. Dr. Balakrishnan’s greatest source of pride is her husband and teenage sons, and ensuring to carry on her mother’s legacy by supporting other working moms whe-never possible. As a big believer in balancing body, mind and spirit, Dr. Balakrishnan knows it takes true commitment and hard work, but is indeed the only path to a joyful state of mind. -Kristen Kucharski, Photos SubmittedGlancer Magazine • DECEMBER 2024 • WESTERN SUBURBS • 25

Her love of vintage inspires her easy going style as she keeps her art fresh, on trend and not too serious. Hosting workshops within the community fuels Julie, and donating art products and art lessons to local nonprofits, to be used as auction items, fills her soul. “I try to pack my day with a variety of things for a well-rounded life, but as I got older, I realized there was more than just checking off the basic boxes of life,” she shares. “To have a heart for others completed my circle.” Always being mindful to carve out time to plug into the vast volunteering opportunities in the local area, Julie loves work-ing with Radical Love, Lazarus House, and giving her time with fellow church members at Christ Community Church. Brian Goewey WHEATON–Brian Goewey, a Chi-cago-area restaurateur, embodies passion, resilience, and a deep com-mitment to community. His culinary journey began with a dream in 2012 to create a space where people could gather over farm-to-table dishes and authentic Neapolitan wood-fired piz-zas. That dream came to life in Whea-ton, Illinois, and has since blossomed into the GIA MIA family of six loca-tions, alongside additional concepts including Livia in Downtown Geneva, moto imōto located in St. Charles and their newest concept in Geneva and Elmhurst, Ella’s Italian Pub. Macarena Tamayo-Calabrese NAPERVILLE–Rena’s career and goals were mostly internationally focused, working for the American Bar Association (ABA), leading legal reform efforts in Africa, Asia and Latin America, interfacing with the UN, OAS, State Depart-ment, etc., which led to her role as the Director of the ABA’s Liaison Office. She discovered her Naperville bubble was near perfect while she worked tire-lessly to collaborate on rule of law with other developing democracies and communities at risk. Rena began to understand that the community she lived in also needed care and nurturing. It worked well because someone was working hard to take care of it, so she redirected her attention inward and ap-plied for the President & CEO position at Naper Settlement; not because she was a museum expert, but because she had the experience in nonprofit man-agement, transformational work, philanthropy and employment management. Charitable organizations are key to thriving communities. As such, Rena has also participated in Dancing with the Celebrities to raise funds for the Career Network Center; served as a mentor and speaker for Kids Matter, presented at meetings for Women in Business Committee of the Naperville Chamber of Commerce, and taught leadership and negotiations courses for the Hispanic Alliance for Career Enhancement (HACE). She believes everything around us is our story, our legacy, an output of our time on earth. It fills our chapters in our community’s History Book of Life. -Kristen Kucharski, Photos Submitted Glancer Magazine • DECEMBER 2024 • WESTERN SUBURBS • 37

Kevin McDowell GENEVA–After completing a triathlon with his childhood friend, Kevin set his eyes on becoming a professional triath-lete and participating in the Olympics one day! His journey was becoming a reality as he approached his senior year in high school when he was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lym-phoma. Not derailed from his pursuit, he pivoted his efforts to beat-ing cancer and after six months of intense chemotherapy, he won the battle with the support of family and Cal’s An-gels. Cancer was by far the biggest challenge Kevin faced in his lifetime, but he turned it into his biggest triumph by focusing on what he could do, versus what he couldn’t do. Due to the impacts of chemotherapy, the return to an elite sport was much harder than he could have ever anticipated; however, his dream came true in 2021 when he made the U.S. Olympic Team in Tokyo and won a Silver Medal in the Mixed Team Relay event. Additionally, he traveled as an al-ternate in the 2024 Olympic Games. Kevin is eternally grateful for his life and has vowed to give back to Cal’s Angels through fundraisers, hospital parties, and participating in the annual CUREage ride. Vintage Holiday Magic: Chicago Christmas Memories Through the Pages Step back into Chicago’s enchanting holiday history with Marshall Field’s: The Store that Helped Build Chicago and Historic Photos of Christmas in Chicago. These books beautifully capture the city’s beloved Christmas tra-ditions, from the iconic Marshall Field’s holiday displays to vintage snapshots that spark memories of a bygone festive era. Celebrate the spirit of Chi-cago’s timeless Christmas magic through these nostalgic pages. ‘ Historic Photos of Christmas in Chicago by Rosemary K. Adams CHICAGO–In Chicago, as wherever Christmas is celebrated, holiday tradi-tions reflect both universal themes and local color, both the spirit of giving and snow-covered State Street. In 1913, Chicago decorated its first civic Christmas tree, while many others arrived on the fabled "Christmas tree ships” of the era. Holiday shoppers crowded the sidewalks in front of stores such as Marshall Field & Company, Santa Claus held the rapt gaze of chil-dren, and churches and charities reached out to the needy. So Christmas was then, and so it has remained. Historic Photos of Christmas in Chicago offers nearly 200 images of the Christmas season in the Windy City, from festive outdoor celebrations to in-timate family gatherings. Culled from the archives of the Chicago History Museum, these images depict the city through the years during its annual celebration of this very special holiday, and so provide a chance to look back in time while reflecting on the meaning of Christmas today. Marshall Field's: The Store that Helped Build Chicago (Landmarks) by Gayle Soucek (Author) Anyone who has waited in a Christmas line for the Walnut Room's Great Tree can attest that Chicago's loyalty to Marshall Field's is fierce. Dayton-Hudson even had to take out advertising around town to apologize for changing the Field's hallowed green bags. And with good reason--the store and those who ran it shaped the city's streets, subsidized its culture and her-alded its progress. The resulting commercial empire dictated wholesale tradeterms in Calcutta and sponsored towns in North Carolina, but its es-sence was always Chicago. So when the Marshall Field name was retired in 2006 after the stores were purchased by Macy's, protest slogans like "Field's is Chicago" and "Field's: as Chicago as it gets" weren't just emotional hype. Many still hope that name will be resurrected like the city it helped support during the Great Fire and the Great Depression. Until then, fans of Marshall Field's can celebrate its history with this warm look back at the be-loved institution.
