Maggie Owen AURORA Metea Valley High School senior Maggie Owen is a self proclaimed introvert who enjoys participating on the high school track and field team as well as rock climbing however this soft spoken and reserved young lady can get a bit crazy when it comes to taking down competitors as one of the elite American Ninja Warriors of the world who sent waves through the competition of Season 13 that aired on July 12 2021 Competing on American Ninja warrior was probably the coolest experience I ever had Maggie says I had over a year to train at Ultimate Ninjas in Naperville I ended up going out on the fourth obstacle because I misplaced the bar and slipped off but I would absolutely do it again and am hopeful to get a call this season This west suburban teen has proven once again that if dream it you can do it Just believe in yourself Kristen Kucharski Photos Submitted Glancer Magazine DECEMBER 2021 WESTERN SUBURBS 21

Photos from An Ornament In Prosperity A History of St Charles Township s Rural Schools Adam D Gibbons GENEVA This local dad private tutor and author is truly awe inspiring accomplishing so much already in his lifetime This includes the recent launch of his latest book release An Ornament In Prosperity A History of St Charles Township s Rural Schools which was compiled through the cooperation of the St Charles History Museum and available in the community He lives on the east side of Geneva in the former Snow family farmhouse which just celebrated its 183rd birthday this past May He is a graduate of Northwestern University Bachelor of Arts History and Wake Forest University Master of Arts History and has been a genealogist since the age of thirteen For several years Adam worked as a fact checker and researcher for an educational publishing company in Evanston Illinois He has lived in the Chicago area since 1993 other than two years in Winston Salem North Carolina He keeps a daily journal that has run over 11 200 continuous days whose entries put together exceed three and a half million words When he is not writing books or tutoring he enjoys reading listening to podcasts and audiobooks walking and spending time in nature He and his wife Heidi who is a photographer and an elementary school teacher in Geneva have two children Their son enjoys geography Minecraft and fencing and their daughter enjoys playing the violin shopping for vintage clothing and learning about biology Each member of the family also enjoys trivia math animals seeing new places and spending time in bookstores Adam served as President of the Board of Directors for Preservation Partners of the Fox Valley and as an usher for Bethlehem Lutheran Church in St Charles He is a life member of the Western New York Genealogical Society and is a member of the Education Committee for the St Charles History Museum Adam conducts historic home research in the Fox Valley and is the founder and owner of Old Adage Press based in Geneva He enjoys gardening collecting antiques and rescuing architectural salvage and 19th century photographs He is also a home bound tutor and specializes in tutoring math history English reading and all areas of the ACT SAT and GRE Each of his publications has been accepted into the Library of Congress and he has been awarded honors from the Corron Farm Preservation Society the Garfield Farm Inn and Museum Preservation Partners of the Fox Valley and the Thornapple Questers Adams books can be found in Harvey s Tales of Geneva and Town House Books of St Charles alon online at Amazon com Photos Submitted Glancer Magazine DECEMBER 2021 WESTERN SUBURBS 25

Ron Schmoker SHERIDAN LISLE Over his lifetime Ron has made an impact on his community and his family He is the current owner of The Elevator in Sheridan yet at 69 years old this is new career for him He grew up in Lisle had five kids and moved to Sheridan He owned Schmoker Drywall most of his life and worked on many suburban schools and well known buildings Although work consumed much of his time he always found treasured moments for his kids turning trees into luxurious forts with doors and windows He continues to spread his love time and contagious energy with his grandkids and all those around him When he became a snowbird to Florida a few years ago he garnered the best fishing stories inclusive of catching an alligator puffer fish shark lobster and crab He also grows giant pumpkins pineapples limes lemons bananas grapefruit and oranges at their Florida house But this master carpenter doesn t rest long and decided to rehab the old grain elevator in Sheridan in 2019 using wood from grain bin floors to create walls of art and even built the bar from them Ron has now added Town Chef to his resume for his well known sweet potato chili and chicken sandwiches too He goes by many names dad papa worker friend above all cherished Kristen Kucharski Photos by Mike Cataura Glancer Magazine DECEMBER 2021 WESTERN SUBURBS 27

Janice Owino and George Bikeri BATAVIA Janice and George have always wanted to own a home as it provides a more stable affordable housing cost and security for their family that includes both physical and emotional peace This couple from Kenya became Batavia s first Habitat for Humanity family this past November Volunteers future homeowners and Habitat officials broke ground for the project Habitat s 68th in the Fox Valley area in October 2020 The homesite at the corner of Wilson Street and Independence Drive previously housed a city water tower We are forever grateful that we were selected and they believed in us to become homeowners Owino shared We are truly blessed to start our new life and family together in this beautiful home It s such a happy ending The experience was educative emotional and exciting The coupled added that one of their favorite features about the home is the energy saving appliances First Centennial Mortgage of Aurora contributed 175 000 to the project and housewarming gifts from community members and Habitat officials included a family bible handmade quilts and 1 500 in gift cards and other items from Batavia Woman s Club Founded in 1988 in Aurora Fox Valley Habitat for Humanity is based at Genesis Community Church in Montgomery Genesis Pastor Jeffrey Barrett is Fox Valley Habitat CEO Habitat is driven by the vision that everyone needs a decent place to live Kristen Kucharski Photos Submitted Glancer Magazine DECEMBER 2021 WESTERN SUBURBS 31

LITERA ARY local An Ornament In Prosperity A History of St Charles Township s Rural Schools by Adam D Gibbons ST CHARLES An Ornament In Prosperity A History of St Charles Township s Rural Schools was compiled through the cooperation of the St Charles History Museum The book published by Old Adage Press Geneva IL is 261 pages in length and features more than one hundred color interior images including reference maps of St Charles Written by Geneva resident Adam Gibbons his inspiration came from acquiring the Alice Davis collection from the family of Carrie Latimer Miller in September 2020 The collection consisted of more than a thousand photographs papers and many personal items associated with education in St Charles There is a school in St Charles named for Ms Davis and she was a well known and respected teacher for many decades Alice Davis passed away in St Charles in 1966 Soon after processing the Alice Davis collection Adam Gibbons donated the vast majority of the 56 WESTERN SUBURBS DECEMBER 2021 Glancer Magazine items in the collection to the St Charles History Museum in the fall and winter of 2020 2021 The book details the history of every one room school in St Charles Township starting with the region s first school founded in 1835 The story of education is St Charles is traced through the consolidation of most rural schools in the late 1940s and well beyond Several interior images date to 2021 and feature the three remaining buildings in the area which once served as schools The book title is taken from a quotation by Aristotle who called education An ornament in prosperity and a refuge in adversity With more than one thousand footnotes and a full name index the book will make a great gift for someone interested in local history Available at Harvey s Tales of Geneva and Town House Books of St Charles Read more about this local author in this month s cover feature Adam Gibbons is one of Glancer Magazine s 15 Fascinating Faces of the Year
