Meet Kathryn Quinn: Boutique Owner, Stylist and Volunteer GENEVA–As a young girl, Kathryn was very creative and would draw pictures of girls in cute outfits in grade school. She went on to graduate from UWM and immediately became the first designer to develop the Oshkosh B’Gosh brand. She worked for fashion design companies for the next 24 years until finally opening her own boutique, Flourish in 2018, a multi-generational, affordable and adorable, fun women’s boutique filled with clothing, acces-sories and gifts. Having volunteered at SAYV Animal Organiza-tion over the years, she also donates a portion of her proceeds to many animal rescues, Her personal style is comfortable and casual with a touch of uniqueness to celebrate her creative and carefree spirit by adding pops of color or textures like open knits, linen, faux fur, or embel-lished cowboy boots. Kathryn loves the dressy jumpsuits, midi floral dresses, crochet knit tops and knit dresses that are hot for Spring 2024. Woven button-down menswear styled suit vests are back with matching pleated, tailored pants or pleated shorts. She says bows are trending this season - in every way possible, in every shape, color or size to wear as a hair accessory or to tie in the back of a dress or top, on straw hats or flat shoes or knit into jacquard designs on lightweight sweaters. “Rosettes are also being used in the same way as appliqués on apparel or jewelry,” Kathryn adds. “Layering of embellished sheer fabrics, a little white dress or an Oxford white button down shirt, classic, preppy styles with a twist, as well as exaggerated puffed sleeves, and Maryjane style elegant ballet slippers.” Kathryn is all about community and loves to dine out, especially at Livia and Preservation, enjoying live music in the summer. Ad-ditionally, she is a very proud member of Life Church in St. Charles. -Kristen Kucharski Glancer Magazine • APRIL 2024 • WESTERN SUBURBS • 13Photos by Mike Catuara

COVER STORYGlancer Magazine • APRIL 2024 • WESTERN SUBURBS • 15Rachel May on Her Love for Fashion & the Latest Spring Trends NAPERVILLE–Fashion has always been a way for Rachel to ex-press herself. Growing up with four sisters, clothes were her way of differentiating herself from her sisters. As social media grew, creating Pinterest fashion boards became one of her favorite pas-times which inspired the opening of her brick and mortar store-front, Boutique Poppy in Naperville, in 2023. “I have definitely gone through phases of different styles but there’s always been a consistent trend of elevated basics and sta-ples in my closet; so as different styles and trends emerge, I just add a piece here and there,” Rachel says. “I knew that that is what I wanted my store to be about. We have great basics and high quality denim, but we also have some trends filtered through-out the store that perfectly spice your wardrobe for any season, such as bows this season!” As Spring turns to Summer, she anticipates seeing red every-where and her personal favorite way to incorporate color trends, like red, is through accessories like shoes, purses, and jewelry. “It’s a great way to add that color into your look and get more wear with a trend, without needing to purchase multiple clothing pieces that you might only wear a few times,” Rachel adds. “It can really elevate any outfit and it can be so stylized and personal, layering and mixing metals, stacking multiple rings on a finger, or combin-ing a gold chain with a silver pendant. There really is no wrong way to play with jewelry!” Launching weekly new arrivals, monthly events, and more pop ups, are ways Rachel includes and engages with the community. She also loves supporting other local businesses in the Downtown Naperville community through partnership events with Lena Rose Holistic Spa, Baesthetic, Face Foundrie, The Bar Above, as well as many local artisan jewelry and ceramics. -Kristen Kucharski Photos by Ruta Grulia

Vanessa Trelford Shares Her Petite Perspective on Style ST. CHARLES/WHEATON–As the Manager and Stylist at Jeans and a Cute Top Shop, Vanessa has learned so much about styl-ing, fashion merchandising and buying from owner Jill Card. She loves all the shades of green for Spring 2024 - mint, sage, lime, kelly, and seafoam are all the rage; as well as bright and muted corals, porcelain white, hot pink, lilac, sky blue and navy. Denim is also trending in long skirts, straight leg, wide leg, cuffed, and raw hems. At only 4’11” tall, she shares Petite Perspective fashion advice, backed by 29 years of personal experimentation. “Say yes to monochromatic outfits. High rise denim elongates the leg line. Pair cropped denim with a nude/neutral shoe. Front/French tuck your tops/sweaters. V-neck and scoop neck tops lengthens the neckline. Vertical patterns and small prints are flattering on a small frame. Lastly, embrace your petiteness! Once you learn how to balance proportions and style your silhouette, shopping is easier and enjoyable. I personally wear what makes me feel good, because confidence never goes out of style.” When Vanessa is not working at JCTS, she is working on her own small jewelry business, Wild Apothecary & Market, specializing in polymer clay earrings and crystal sun catchers. With the help of her sister, they sell at local artisan markets, Midwest Nice in Geneva, and will have a booth at Firefly Market on May 11th in Wheaton! Fortunate to live in the heart of downtown St. Charles, Vanessa and her husband love eating dinner at El Puente Mexican restau-rant and walking to Town House Books & Cafe for brunch. She feels blessed to live and work in such a vibrant community. -Kristen Kucharski Photos by Mike CatuaraGlancer Magazine • APRIL 2024 • WESTERN SUBURBS •17

Whether it's layers of delicate necklaces, dangling drop earrings, stacked bracelets, or bold statement rings, gold is the perfect way to add a touch of elegance and glamor to any outfit.” Giving back to the community is a core value that she prioritizes. One of their main initiatives is hosting private shopping events, "Shop for a Cause", where they donate a portion of the proceeds to a charity chosen by the party host, such as Rising Lights, Kayla’s Hope, Kendall’s Kindness, Tiny N Tall Rescue, Cals An-gels, Mutual Ground, Tri City Family Services, Lurie Children’s Hospital, Lazarus House, Fox Valley Special Rec, Casa Kane County, Gigis Playhouse, and Sunshine Kids. -Kristen Kucharski Photos by Mike Catuara

Buddy Up For Life NAPERVILLE–It has be-come more and more appar-ent in the past few decades how physical fitness can be a benefit to people in all gener-ations. We are bombarded with multitudes of choices in-cluding unique training gyms, (can anyone say goat yoga or aerial arts?), in-home pro-grams like Peloton, and hun-dreds of new approaches and training through social media. Whatever sport or program you work with, it is no doubt a huge benefit to your physical and mental health. We are all at risk of degeneration, but some more than others. Individ-uals born with Down Syn-drome (DS) are at an increased risk of health com-plications and mental chal-lenges. Very often, they have atypical development of motor skills and are more sus-ceptible to low muscle-tone, looseness of ligaments, obesity and type 2 diabetes. As well, adults and children with DS face challenges in behavioral activity that can lead to depression and anxiety. The national organization Buddy Up For Life was created with these risks in mind. Their mission is to offer cus-tomized programs that proactively embrace these challenges in order for athletes with Down Syndrome thrive. Katie Finke, who has a teenage son with DS, remembers hear-ing about Buddy Up For Life and wishing their was a program closer to them. As an avid tennis player and coach, she was excited when Five Star Tennis Center in Plainfield partnered up with Buddy Up For Life. Katie is now the Buddy Up Tennis Coordinator for the Naperville chapter of the organization Along with Buddy Up Fitness Coordinator Jennifer Kurtovic, they hold a weekly high-energy adaptive tennis and fitness pro-gram for children and adults with Down Syndrome. “We en-able our athletes to reach their fullest potential by providing a unique environment that combines tennis, fitness and social activities through our weekly 90-minute clinics,” says Katie. “Tennis experi-ence is not required.” Athletes are partnered with volunteer Buddies to re-inforce the Coach’s instruc-tions, provide support and develop friendships. Buddy Up believes in pushing their athletes to reach their high-est potential while also mak-ing it fun. “I love that we still have the same athletes, plus so many more, coming to the clinic 8 years later,” says Katie. “It is also a great op-portunity for parents to come watch and catch up with other parents in the DS com-munity.” To find out more about Buddy Up For Life or becom-ing a Buddy volunteer, please visit their website at www.buddyupforlife.org or email Katie at napervilletennis@ buforlife.org. www.buddyup forlife.org ABOUT THE WRITER Mindy Kyle is passionate about helping people discover what brings them joy and to live a full, healthy and happy life. by Mindy Kyle / Photos SubmittedCaryn Rivadeneira Frankinschool 2: The Cupsnake Escape ELMHURST–Long-time Elmhurst resident Caryn Rivadeneira has worked in the writing industry as an editor since she graduated from college. Alongside editing, she writes books. The majority of her 25 published books are stories written for children, including the Helper Hounds series and Edward and Annie: A Penguin Adventure, a pic-ture book she wrote in conjunction with the Shedd Aquarium. Her most current book, Frankinschool 2: The Cupsnake Escape, is the second (of four) in the Frankinschool Mystery Series. The inspira-tion for the Frankinschool series came one day when a visiting au-thor signed a book to her son “To Frank” (not his name). “He was little then and quite upset,” says Caryn, “so we made up a funny story about why the author may have written that, and it grew into Frankinschool!” The series is about a boy named Fred, who taps into the “power of pretend” by writing What If poems, and same as her son, has an author accidentally sign his book “To Frank” which leads him into writing his first poem: What if I am Frank in School? The poem un-leashes all sorts of mayhem and leads Fred and his friend, Luisa, to the mysterious school attic where they meet Frank the ghost. In The Cupsnake Escape, Fred’s power of pretend turns cupcakes into cupsnakes at a school baking competition, and once again, they put their creativity to the test to try to save the school from the snakes. Caryn’s Frankinschool Mystery Series can be found anywhere books are sold as well as all online book retailers. The third book in the series, Frankinschool 3: Gone to the Dogs is set to be re-leased this August.LITERAARRYYlocalKNOW A LOCAL AUTHOR?  editorial@glancermagazine.comGlancer Magazine • APRIL 2024 • WESTERN SUBURBS • 25

Westside Improv WHEATON–Improv. To many this word culminates a myriad of anxious feelings. After all, creating humor out-of-thin air must be left to the experts. How can people spontaneously create stories from audience suggestions? It is awe-inspiring. However, improv is for everyone. And just like anything worth achieving, it takes practice - a skill set, built over time. By learning the correct techniques, master-ing the art of the ‘unplanned’ becomes second na-ture. Introducing: Westside Improv in downtown Wheaton. Westside Improv presents long-form improv shows and classes throughout the week. Themes range from Shake-spearean plays to murder mysteries … and everything in between. Just like music, there are a variety of comedy genres. Finding styles and themes that speak to our unique preferences, helps draw us closer to this alluring art form. Each week, WI features a variety of teams from the Chicago-land area. Shows are Friday and Saturday nights; typically, featuring three teams. Cultivating humor into our everyday life is essential to our overall health and wellbeing. You don’t have to be the class clown or life of the party to try your hand in improv. It creatively propels us in many facets of life - school, work, family and friends. It teaches us to: be positive, spontaneous, take risks, connect with others, get out of our heads and celebrate failure. It’s perfect for kids who want to build confidence, social skills and learn acceptance. And it’s great for adults and working profes-sionals who want to become more present, practice active listen-ing and deepen collaboration. It’s the ultimate team sport! -Brianna Bartemeyer, Photos SubmittedUNIQUEUNIQUE IN SUBURBIAin Suburbia26 • WESTERN SUBURBS • APRIL 2024 • Glancer Magazine

MOM’S Chop, Cook, Chow! CHICAGO–I am incredibly busy, but I love to entertain. I love to host game nights and parties whenever possible, but it seems that I never have time to cook anything fancy anymore, so I called upon Lori Smerz, a St. Charles resident, mother, and former high school Family Consumer Science teacher for help! As the owner of The Party Kitchen in Geneva, honing the em-pathy to truly relate to time thwarted meal prepping, she taught our crew some tricks of the trade. She totally gets busy! Laughter filled the air and aprons were donned as the group eagerly gathered around the well-equipped kitchen island, ready to dive into the culinary creations ahead. First up on the menu were the calzones, mixing a variety of delightful fusions of savory and earthy fla-vors to create ham and spinach; as well as meat-ball calzones. Using ready made dough and meatballs, combined with fresh parmesan, spin-ach, basil, and a variety of spices, we learned the art of folding and glazing to golden perfection. The end result looked like a restaurant made, high qual-ity, beautiful pocket of yumminess. No meal is complete without the perfect accompa-niment of a freshly put together salad with all the right colors of vegetables, and the added bonus of the most delicious homemade dressing. With a vi-brant array of fresh herbs and spices at our dis-posal, we eagerly experimented with fancy cuts and designs and flavor combinations, creating a tangy vinaigrette that perfectly complemented the richness of the calzones. Finally, it was time to indulge in a sweet treat with a twist – tiramisu dip. We whipped together mas-carpone cheese, cocoa, coffee and served it with delicate ladyfingers. This classic Italian dessert was ready in minutes and tasted divine! As the evening drew to a close, we gathered around the island and savored each bite and rem-inisced at the satisfaction of mastering our new simple techniques to a great meal!
