Meet Carrie Thomas CAROL STREAM/ST. CHARLES/NORTH AURORA/ WHEATON–Carrie has been a salon owner and hairdresser for the past 38 years in Wheaton. She absolutely loves mak-ing people feel beautiful and confident through makeup and hair. She wholeheartedly believes in the happier you are, the more beautiful overall you become and treasures the chances to work with clients and add positivity in their life through out-ward expression. By nature, Carrie is a creative spirit and also appreciates being her own kind of beautiful. She was inspired by a unique bracelet in 2012 at the Kane County Fairgrounds to bring her own unique flare and authenticity to old objects. DIY projects are ingrained in her soul and bringing trash to treasure fills her passion bucket deeply. She lives by the words, “feed your focus, starve your distrac-tion” so used her entrepreneurial background to open another business, Whimsy Beauty Design, a retail space that allows her to think outside the box, creating one-of-a-kind acces-sories such as pins, hats, scarves, vintage items, belts, and jewelry, as well as clothing, home decor, and seasonal items - many of which are upcycled and green. Carrie’s whimsical, timeless pieces can be found inside Trend+Relic, St. Charles; Rustic Fox, North Aurora; The Vin-tage Marketplace, North Aurora; and at the Kane County Flea Market. “Beauty begins the moment you decide to be yourself ” –Coco Chanel Glancer Magazine • APRIL 2022 • WESTERN SUBURBS • 9COVER STORYCarrie
Meet Jennifer Welenc GENEVA–The old adage, where there’s a will, there’s a way couldn’t be truer for Jennifer as she has wandered through life checking off wants and desires while filling needs along the way. With a background in Marine Biology and dreams of working with dolphins, she fulfilled this aspiration early on working at a Dolphin Research Center in the Florida Keys. After marry-ing her husband in 2002 and starting a family, Jennifer now works hard to facilitate her children’s goals, which can be ex-pensive with school sports, club Lacrosse and tuition at Cen-tral Pennsylvania Youth Ballet. When supplemental income became a necessity, she used her creative spirit to start Just Bee Pampered, an in-home spa party service that pampers party guests with rose petal foot & hand spas, facials, trendy nail colors, a propped filled selfie-station, bee-utiful gift bags, homemade ‘bee-sleepy’ pil-low spray, and more! “I taught the kids at an early age how to “Just Be”, Jennifer shares. “As busy as our lives are, it’s important to make sure they both know how to be still and be alone with their thoughts. In time, “Just Be” turned into teaching them how to Be Fun, Be Silly, Be Different, Be Crazy, Be Unique, Be Yourself, and ultimately let yourself, Just BEE Pampered!” Jennifer is also a part-time photographer and loves to give back to the community with photo-fundraising for local organ-izations. She also volunteers for Kane County CASA and is a member of the Geneva Chamber of Commerce and Boss Moms Networking Group. –Kristen Kucharski, Photos Submitted10 • WESTERN SUBURBS • APRIL 2022 • Glancer Magazine

SWEET ALI’S BAKERY “A party without cake is just a meeting.” –Julia Child HINSDALE–Life truly wouldn’t be the same without sweets. Cakes, pies, pastries … the list goes on! As the sweet-savory debate con-tinues, there is no denying the power of food memories - especially as it pertains to sweets. Why? For many of us, they’re associated with the reward center of our brains. Sweets are synonymous to celebratory moments, holiday events, milestones and special oc-casions. Not only do we register the taste, smell and texture of food - but, we remember our environment … who we were with, where we were and how we felt. Those who suffer from food allergies can find it difficult to enjoy these simple, sweet pleasures. Enter: Sweet Ali’s Gluten Free Bakery. This month, Sweet Ali’s in downtown Hinsdale, will be celebrating its 12th anniversary. This unique, local gem is a certified-dedicated gluten free bakery and offers over 100 sweets and savory products - including dairy-free and vegan options. Everything is made-from-scratch for its retail and wholesale busi-nesses. In fact, you can find Sweet Ali’s at some of your favorite Chicagoland food stores and restaurants. Local finds include: its pancake mix and cinnamon buns at Egg Harbor and its hamburger buns at Country House. Inside this beloved bakery you will find: brownies, breads, muffins, coffeecakes, cookies, bars, cupcakes, cakes, pies, pastries, chicken pot pie, pizza dough, quiche, dry mixes and prepared Ital-ian meals from Da Luciano (a local, family-owned restaurant!). Popular must-tries are its chocolate chip cookies, cinnamon buns and toffee bars. A variety of cupcakes are offered daily, too. Be sure to check out its cupcake calendar, which highlights the ‘cupcake of the week’. Glancer Magazine • APRIL 2022 • WESTERN SUBURBS • 19Pottawatomie Garden Club St. Charles ST. CHARLES–The weather has finally broken, and I am hopeful that it is the beginning of continuous warmer temperatures and more sunshine. It is time to break the ice chains and get out and about to walk around our neighborhoods and our lovely downtown districts. In St. Charles, the Pottawatomie Garden Club wants to make sure your walks are filled with flowers and color. Through their mission of beautifying home grounds and the St. Charles community, the club culti-vates the spirit of gardening in its broadest sense. Twice a year, the Pottawatomie Garden Club, first organ-ized in 1928, has a huge turnout of members planting seasonal flowers along the Main Street and Illinois Street bridges, as well as planting fresh blooming plants and greenery in the planters around the municipal building and in large pots around the downtown area. Additionally, Project Daffodil is an on-going effort. During the past two years, volunteer members helped plant 10,000 daffodils and 150 Virginia Bluebells in Mount St. Mary Park. Their next bridge planting is scheduled for Wednesday, May 18th, weather permitting. To help keep the riverfront beautiful, the club organizes a group that weeds and cleans up litter along the Bob Leon-ard walkway on a regular basis. Other community pro-grams include honoring past members with Memorial Trees, hosting the St. Charles Garden Walk – their big-gest fundraiser, and donating to many organizations that educate and support gardening and beautification. Ad-ditionally, the club gives away two scholarships each year to students majoring in agricultural or related studies. “When we moved to St. Charles from Texas three years ago, the Fox River and beautiful parks were a huge attraction,” says Denna O’Connor, Social Media Chairperson for Pot-tawatomie Garden Club. “Becoming a member was a fantastic way to share my love of plants with other gar-deners.” Anyone who en-joys gardening is encouraged to join the club. Each month they socialize, plan and learn from expert guest speakers on diverse subjects, such as beekeep-ing, growing herbs, floral arranging and tree pruning. “To top it off,” says Denna, “our club members have a good time. We enjoy spending time together doing the tasks we love. The Pottawatomie Garden Club wants to make sure that walkers in St. Charles continue to have walks filled with healthy trees and colorful flowers for genera-tions to come.” For more information on membership and the work of the Pottawatomie Garden Club. www.pottagardenclub.org ABOUT THE WRITER Mindy Kyle is passionate about helping people discover what brings them joy and to live a full, healthy and happy life. TAPROOM, TOURS & TACOS GENEVA–Throughout the western suburbs you probably have seen their beer on the shelves at Binny’s or SavWay Fine Wines & Spirits; you may have ordered one of their specialty beers at Craft Urban, Barrel + Rye, or Geneva Ale House; however, did you know that the method behind the math and science of Penrose Brewing Company's brewing process was started by local Geneva resident, Tom Korder, who uses his engineering degree from U of I to perfect the art of cold crashing and the entire fer-mentation development, while running it via a control panel he designed on his phone? Through a personal tour available at this off the beaten path pubhouse, we learned the art of making some of their specialties like Goofy Boots, the Daily Grind, and Pina Colada Seltzer. The $10 reservation included a full 45-minute behind the scenes tour, a draft beer, and a souvenir glass with the famed Penrose logo. Beyond the extensive menu of unique and perfected flavors, there is a hometown feel throughout the establishment, both inside and out. Fam-ilies, couples, and groups filled the casual atmosphere bringing in their own food, charcuterie boards, or ordering from the Taco Truck outside. Chatter, laughter, and board games consumed the tables while national sports were broadcasted in the background. Their community bond extends past the brick and mortar walls as they also partner with area farms to donate spent grain for livestock or provide it free to residents to perhaps make homemade dog biscuits. They work with BFC in Batavia for their printing needs and take advantage of the re-verse osmosis treatment process in Geneva’s City's Water Treatment . The ambience and tour were fully engaging and this was a perfect way to spend a Saturday afternoon. OVERVIEW Penrose Brewing Company is a small, locally owned Brewery and Tap-room that specializes in small batch brewing, fresh hoppy flavors and wild / sour fermentations. They love to experiment with new styles and feature a rotating selection of great beers available in the Taproom from Hazy IPAs and American Lagers to Fruited Sours and Imperial Stouts. CHICAGO—New Stack Ventures, an early-stage venture fund dedicated to investing in Silicon Valley outsiders, recently an-nounced it has raised $42.6 million for its second fund. This fund is the second largest single-partner (solo capitalist) funds ever raised between the coasts–outside of San Francisco/Sil-icon Valley, Los Angeles and New York City–and follows a $6M raise for the first fund in 2018. New Stack Ventures makes angel, pre-seed, and seed stage investments into B2B SaaS startups transforming large legacy industries like finance, healthcare, cyber security, supply chain, construction, and real estate. The firm has a current portfolio of 38 companies including Hologram, Cybrary, Fairmarkit, and Covie. New Stack also intentionally seeks deals outside of Los Angeles, New York City, and the San Francisco Bay Area. The Chicago-based fund is naturally drawn to the Midwest as a focus region–notable area investments include Tovala, Trip-Scout, and Hologram–but it takes a global lens to investing, with recent deals in Toronto and Guadalajara. BREAKING THE SILICON VALLEY MODEL The Midwest is seeing an explosion of tech startups and un-icorns, akin to the Bay Area several years ago. There are more unicorns in the Midwest today than there were in the Bay Area in 2014–the year Moran launched the first VC podcast, The Full Ratchet. Chicago is now home to 20 tech unicorns, with 12 produced in 2021 alone. That makes Chicago competitive with better-known tech hubs: only the San Francisco Bay Area minted more unicorns last year. New Stack Ventures's philosophy is that industry outsiders–those not from the typical Silicon Valley background or located in the major tech hubs–tend to drive the most innovation and success. Many of the biggest unicorns and companies today were started by non-insiders. As such, the firm’s portfolio does-n’t represent the founder that commonly receives funding: Stanford-educated, Google-trained, Bay Area-located. New Stack’s secret for success is finding value in places typically overlooked by other investors. The fund is dedicated to invest-ing intentionally outside of the traditional Silicon Valley formula, and looks for mission-driven founders with an irrational com-mitment to their cause–regardless of location, background or circumstance. TechTimeBUSINESS
OUTSIDERS INVESTING IN OUTSIDERS The New Stack Ventures team reflects this outsider philosophy. Founder and General Partner Nick Moran came to investing from the corporate world, and does not have the typical back-ground of most tech investors. Previously Moran worked for Da-naher in M&A and Product Management, where he developed one of the most successful products in the company’s history — an analytical device for testing compounds in drinking water. While he may not come from a typical investing background, Moran has long been a trusted voice in venture. When he began angel investing in 2013, Moran found the startup fundraising pro-cess to be confusing and opaque. To learn more and interview managers one-on-one, Moran launched the first venture podcast back in May 2014, The Full Ratchet, to foster transparency in the industry. New Stack was one of the first VC funds syndicated on the AngelList platform shortly thereafter in 2015. Unlike the majority of emerging managers today, Moran did not spin-out from an existing venture fund. Drawing on his experi-ence as a former operator and angel investor, Moran and his team have built the fund full-stack themselves, including internal and external software systems to help identify the most promis-ing startups. In keeping with their belief that closed networks don't scale, the firm recently launched an outbound software sourcing tool called Seeker, which finds a startup the moment it has a digital presence (website, Form D filing, etc.), sourcing 9,000 potential deals to-date. New Stack’s public-facing inbound software tool VC Rank, which provides founders with customized lists of VC funds, has sourced 2,600 potential deals to-date. “From the beginning, our investing strategy has been centered around disrupting the VC model. We are a fund of firsts: the first venture podcast, an early AngelList syndicate, and first to use software to find deals,” said Nick Moran, Founder and General Partner, New Stack Ventures. “We don’t believe in walled gar-dens–we believe in creating open systems, providing supportive capital and changing the standard venture model for the future.” To learn more or to send a pitch, please visit www.newstack.vc. ABOUT NEW STACK VENTURES New Stack Ventures is an early stage fund dedicated to investing in Silicon Valley outsiders. Based in Chicago, the single-partner fund makes angel, pre-seed, and seed stage investments–typi-cally between $500K - $1.5M–into early-stage startups, and in-tentionally seeks founders with non-traditional tech backgrounds or companies located outside the major tech hubs. Founder and General Partner Nick Moran launched the first venture podcast, The Full Ratchet, back in May 2014 to foster transparency in the industry–the podcast now has more than 74,000 subscribers.
